Just an observation.

I often look at the  'Todays Birthdays' on the Forum page.  However, it seems that an awful lot of people make an account one day never to return. Now I know that this forum can be 'seen' by non-members but it seems quite odd that someone would 'join' a group and then not join in. I'd love to be able to ask them why !!

Me ???  I'm here for the long haul as I think all you people are wonderful and I've no plans to leave as yet. 🤣

Probably stop by, create an account, ask one question, and never come back.  Can't really blame em, I've done that on various automotive forums when I needed an answer to one question, but am by no means a gear-head (nor have the desire to become one).  Sometimes, folks will join multiple forums, ask a question, not get an answer within 2 minutes, and go looking elsewhere, and forget the address to the other sites.  Meanwhile, their question was answered 30 minutes after posting.  LOL

I have often wondered that also, Brenda.  Of the hundreds of members here only a small percentage are active.  Maybe if a person is not active for "X" number or years their account should automatically delete.  I really can't think of advantages or disadvantages to that, other than it would just keep things more tidy....

Yes it happens on all sites. I like the people that join on a pen turning forum I belong to and they introduce themselves and tell this wonderful story how they are just starting into pen turning and asking questions on what tools are needed and the whole deal and never hear from them again. It takes time to answer questions at least have the courtesy to acknowledge that you read them. Then when you mention do a search of past threads it is like you cursed their mothers or something. People get upset and say this is rude and what not. My point for doing that is many times the same questions get asked many many times over and over again. Yes I understand the reasons but what happens less and less answers are supplied and alot of info is left out. So if you search the site and all sites have search features, you can see past responses which maybe more complete.

When I started this addiction, I did that, I joined every scroll saw forum I could find, minimal profile info.  One reason is access to the pattern library, some require that you are logged in.  Over time I started ignoring those forums that just did not have the traffic, and especially if the person cross posted here and somewhere else.  I know it does make some sense to do so, but me as a viewer, not so much.

This one has more friendly, helpful people, than any other I haunt save one - and that is a different area entirely.  now I just come here and ignore the rest of the scroll saw forumns.

Must confess, I never knew there was such a thing as a 'scrollsaw pattern' before I joined this forum.  Now I'm a 'pattern junkie' 🤣😜

Am a newbie so from a newbie's point of view I joined this site for honest tips about the saw types, wood to use, and ideas of what u can do in scrolling, I haven't even looked at another site as all I need is right here, ppl are great friendly and helpfull,. I don't bother with patterns because I can copy and paste  a pic, a carving, or even a bad scan and I redraw them all in corel so I can adapt or change, this site is a one stop shop lol

Well that's the difference Gordon.  I can't do any of the above. LOL.  Coral to me is something found in the sea, I couldn't carve anything bar a Turkey, a scan is something I went to hospital for,  although I can copy and paste words from an email .. !!!!

As for myself, I haven't been as active as I'd like because we're still digging out and repairing from Hurricane Michael (14 months now) - I can now "see" my scroll saw - I found it right where I left it lol, but not the wood, it's nowhere to be found at the moment - I may take some pics of my shop to show you what I mean LOL 😞

As for others, I agree that some will come and ask a question and move on once they get their answer, others perhaps are too shy to contribute  which I think is the #1 reason - I know in other forums I'm on (not wood related) that is the #1 reason for not contributing - they either don't believe anything they have to contribute is of value or others may think them "silly" or flame them for perceived "dumb" responses or contributions.

Other forums are very "flame" intensive and tend to put the fear of forums in many

Yes, it does seem to be a common phenomena among internet forums.  I will say this, though, like New2woodwrk said, some forums can be pretty intimidating to newcomers.  That is not the case here.  This is one of the most friendly and genial forums I've seen.  No reason for anyone to feel like they've been run out of this place.

Internet forums are full of all kinds..

One Hit Wonders who come one time and gone

Some that post on every thread

Some that post useful info and some not useful

    Some that know everything

Some that really know a lot

Some that are here mostly for social issues

Some that have great technical knowledge.

And many other types....which one are you
