Scrappile Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 (edited) I didn't see a "New Years Resolutions" thread this year. COWARDS! Trust me they are made to be made and made to be broken.... Last year I said no new patterns to add to my hundreds I have. I broke it within a week of New Years, and I am still alive today... I did have a stroke, cataract surgery, hand injured in workshop and hernia surgery,,, maybe because..I broke. But that is all just little warnings... be brave. I have one for this year. I am only going to scroll things that I have a predetermined purpose for. I have piles of scrolled things no one wants. I suppose they are destined for a bond fire at my funeral wiener roast. So this year I will only scroll things that will be going to someone... I do have a couple projects that are going that way,,,, but beyond that,,,, my scroll saw may get somewhat rusty. I cannot just keep on piling things up. Predetermined may mean I find some charity that maybe I can help, something like that. dgman Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 I never make resolutions because they always get broken, simple as that! i didn’t know you had a stroke. Did you recover from it? As far as cutting things no one wants, if it makes you happy...do it! Quote
bandaideman Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 I used to make resolutions and break them in short time so I made a resolution never to make resolutions and that I can stick to. I have managed to loose 100 lbs , quit drinking and quit smoking over the years. I started those habits out of stress, guilt and depression of not being able to keep the resolution those once I quite making them these habits went away. Quote
new2woodwrk Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 No resolutions here - but I think your charity idea is a winner! Quote
Hawk Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 I ran into this problem a few years back. That's when I decided right then and there..."scrolling with purpose" . I was tired of making things that either piled up on my shop shelves or collected dust in the house. As for a new years resolution... organize my shop!!!! Chris Quote
JimErn Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 Scrollers are so much like bikers in some respects. I've been scrolling for 4 years this month, but I probably average about 6 hours a week - maybe. Kind of like this guy I met once talking about how long he had been riding, only bike he ever owned, I looked at the speedometer, and for the 9 years of riding he had 13K miles! I am no where near as dedicated as most of y'all to this hobby, I just can not imagine how much would accumulate if I spent the time at the machine that y'all do... I hung my work in the shop, then the dust settled on it and it started looking like it was growing hair. So I put stuff on the walls of the house, wife said enough, dusting is not her favorite activity. I made a list of people I know with birthdays and anniversaries, I am now thought to be a very considerate guy, since they get something for those occasions - if they only knew! And still it stacked up, so I started selling once a month, 8 months of the year at a local trade fair. And I sell to get rid of it, I know what it costs for my next I don't need this but I want it purchase. And I sell to get that amount, or get enough for wood now that I moved up to actual hardwoods. I give it away too, some kid is looking at two pieces, can't decide which to spend his saved money on, I'll give him the one he does't buy. And I am old coot, so if some young thing flirts a little, just cause I am on a diet does not mean I can not look at the menu, I have fun and am more likely to drop a price. I am not the vendor you want next to you - ROFLMAO So I either need to find another hobby and back off from scrolling, or meet some new folks to add to my list. Gordster 1 Quote

Good stuff Jim,best read and laugh I had in awhile..One day at the market,I had pen holders with initials.A cute little girl came along and said oh letter k is my initial,my name is Karen..So ole softie gives it to her, then about 5 minutes later, here comes 3 more little ones being led over by Karen looking for their initials...lol LarryEA, wombatie, Jim McDonald and 1 other 2 2 Quote
spirithorse Posted January 14, 2020 Report Posted January 14, 2020 Paul, I hope you don't let your saw get rusty! I really enjoy seeing your projects and you are extremely talented. I guess I'll just bite the bullet and let you mail your projects to me even though that means I'll have to remove my projects from the walls to display yours! God Bless! Spirithorse Quote
wombatie Posted January 15, 2020 Report Posted January 15, 2020 I have the same resolutions every year and that is to try something new on the Scroll Saw. I only ever make things that have been ordered or asked for by the family but that said I do have a few bits sitting in a draw that no one wants, not even me but Terry will not let me burn them. Paul @Scrappile I remember you mentioning your Cataract surgery and maybe your hand injury (at least I think it was you) but I don't remember the stroke or the hernia surgery, did you tell us? LarryEA Posted January 15, 2020 Report Posted January 15, 2020 Paul, I would guess you recovered from everything except scrolling. I took a break from scrolling for about... don't know for how long but anyway, I'm back at it and don't know what to do with what I've scrolled over the years or what I am scrolling now. Right now I like scrolling patterns of old cars and motorcycles. Got any? Quote
