Bucky 80 Posted April 10, 2020 Report Posted April 10, 2020 Is there a favorite repositional spray glue brand for attaching patterns to wood? Last couple of projects, getting the pattern off the wood was as tough as cutting out the pattern. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
dgman Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 Hey Carl, I would rather the pattern stay stuck to the wood rather than it coming loose while I’m cutting. Some folks use blue painters tape under the pattern. The tape makes it easier to peel off the pattern, however, I don’t like using blue tape because I hate dealing with the little pieces of tape left behind. I use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. I spray a light coat on the back of the pattern, let set for about 30 Seconds then apply to the wood. After cutting, the pattern easily comes off with the help of a heat gun or hair drier. Apply heat to the pattern and it loosens enough to peel the pattern off. Or you can spritz some mineral spirits on the pattern. This will loosen the pattern from the wood. Then just peel it off. Gordster Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 Hi Carl,I use Elmer spray glue, get it ad Wal-Mart or most hardware stores.Lots of the folks in here use super 77.I have great luck with elmer,so I stick with it.Secret with these spray glue is to use a light spray on the pattern.Don't drown it lol. I find also to always shake can well and stay back from pattern a bit so not to get drips falling on pattern.I also don't use tape any more. Usually pattern lifts right off,but if not I give it a dab of mineral spirits..hope this is of some help..Gordie OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 I glue directly to the wood most times and take the pattern off by wiping it with Mineral Spirits... OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Foxfold Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 I use mineral spirits to lift the pattern off the wood. It leaves a 'stencil' that I can use later. 2 for 1 so to speak OCtoolguy 1 Quote
loftyhermes Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 My current favourite repositionable spray glue at the moment is the purple can one from Crafters Companion. https://www.crafterscompanion.co.uk/craft-essentials/glues-adhesives.html?cat=4154 OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Dave Monk Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 I use 3M 45. Glue is kind of like ice cream. Try them all and see what flavor you like best. Newsawontheblock and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Bucky 80 Posted April 12, 2020 Author Report Posted April 12, 2020 Tried the tape, I don't like the cut track. Does mineral spirits do anything to the wood that affects finishing? I will try the heat and different glue. Thanks all. Does everyone use just regular printer paper? Seems all my problems are the paper separating. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
dgman Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Yes, just cheap printer paper. Mineral spirits will dry very quickly. If using an oil based finish, mineral spirits will have no effect on the finish. If using a water based finish, just let the mineral spirits dry for 24 hours. You can use shellac right away. But in any case, about time you do your final sanding you are good to go. Edited April 12, 2020 by dgman Scrappile and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
nrscroller Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Hi I used to use Super 77 but it gets blotchy as the can empties. I have a good friend that works at 3M and she recommended the the 3M 45 spray. I have been using that about 6 months and it is much bettter for craft work. That elmers glue spray is not good. Denny Knappen Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 I guess I am different. I use label sheets with no perforations and print right on the sheet. Peal off the backing and attach right onto the wood. After cutting, it is real easy to peal off. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
LarryEA Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 I'll throw in my option. For most of how I attach my patterns is using Glad Press n Seal Food Wrap. First I cover the wood with Press n Seal then spray glue the pattern and attach it to the Press n Seal. Can reposition if necessary. The Press n Seal is see through Dave Monk and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Bucky 80 Posted April 14, 2020 Author Report Posted April 14, 2020 I like the idea of the press and seal, but does it hold to the wood well? Painters tape holds well, but the cut residue sucks. Press and seal is thin and shouldn't leave a cut residue. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

It is GLAD'S Press n Seal It is best used on patterns (wood, etc) that is 6" or bigger. I have a small roller that I use to smoothe. I read the title again and realized this does not help for repositioning patterns. I suggest expermenting a couple times. Press n Seal is all I use. Dave Monk 1 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted April 14, 2020 Report Posted April 14, 2020 I have been using Gorilla spray glue lately. I had run out of the Elmers glue and the Gorilla was less expensive. Seems to be working fine. I put shelf paper down first then put the pattern on the shelf liner. Quote

Dave, You do not need to do anything. It sticks and peals off even after days. But why would you not sand and clean first Dave Monk 1 Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted April 23, 2020 Report Posted April 23, 2020 I put the clear, self adhesive shelf liner (contact paper, duck brand) down first. Then either my self adhesive label or sprayed pattern. Easy. Quote
DME72 Posted April 24, 2020 Report Posted April 24, 2020 i used to use only spray adhesive on my patterns. did not like having to put mineral spirits on to take pattern off. saw iggy using shelf liner on here and tried it and it works great. peels right off after im done cutting and no residue is left on the wood. for glue i use loc tite brand spray adhesive from lowes. low cost and goes a long way. so does the shelf liner which i got at walmart. doug Quote
crupiea Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 I use the cheapo spray glue from walmart or wherever I can get it. There is a bit of an art to it. 1- spray the paper with a very. very light coat of glue, very light, should not be shiny. 2- wait at least 20- 30 minutes. It should be just barely tacky and by barely I mean way less tacky than a post it note. It it is post it note tacky, it will never come off the wood. if it is too tacky, wait another 5-10 minutes. barely tacky. like you can touch it and wonder if glue is actually on it tacky. 3- apply to the wood.
