OCtoolguy Posted February 24, 2023 Report Posted February 24, 2023 I was informed today that I have it. I had no idea. I'm big and strong so it surprises me but I am 80 next month. I'm just not sure I want to get on another pill. So I'm asking for any first hand experience. Thanks. RabidAlien and kiko 2 Quote
Scrappile Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Sorry to read this Ray, but of the things us old folks can have, that may not be the worst. My biggest fear is dementia, and that is probably in my future. I do not have a lot of healthy brain left after two strokes. What the heck is one more pill. Open up, throw them in and swallow. I do not know much about osteporwhatsit, other than what I just read. Is slow in progressing? You speak of not wanting more pills and I only take three prescribed pills. I take more pills because my son keeps sending me these expensive vitamin pills to take. I do not know his motives. Maybe afraid I will pass and Mom will move in with him. JUST KIDDING! My wife"s brother, out lived his body by a long ways. He had several major strokes, had to learn to speak again, he only could say fowl cuss words for quite some time.. It was funny, but it wasn't, you know what I mean. Had several heart attaches and open heart surgeries, part of his lungs removes. Three time a day he would take out his bag of pills, gather one of each, which totaled around 15, throw then in his mouth and chewed them up! I cannot imagine what that taste like! So Ray, take one more damn pill is it is necessary. I think and I am a lot younger than you, I turned 79 this month, still in my prime... I think the most important medicine we can take is keep smiling, keep thinking positively and keep your sense of humor. "Don't Let The Old Man In", God bless you Ray, You are a good man, you will be fine. bobscroll, munzieb, jollyred and 1 other 2 2 Quote

Sycamore67 Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Very strange....don't want to take more pills ??? The real question is what is the alternative ? Probably not much tomorrow or the next day but a year from now could be breaking bones. My wife has osteoporosis and is aggressively treating it with shots every so many months and regular monitoring. The tests show that the treatment has arrested the bone loss. I will not bore you with how many pills I take to just make it through the day. But the alternative is not good. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Morning Ray, I HAD Osteoporosis. Note *HAD*. My doctor put me on Fosamax four years later my bones had healed and he said I would never have to worry about this again. I just has a bone density test last week and everything is great. Take that pill you won't regret it. Oh heck I take 9 pills a day only 2 are RX. Scrappile, OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders 2 1 Quote
jerry walters Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Here is another member with osteoporosis. Was diagnosed several years ago but wasn't put on medication until a couple of years ago. I too was put on Fosamax. Take this medication once a week. No big deal. My wife was on Fosamax for several years. I have heard about osteoporosis for several years but the only people I knew were women. Imagine my surprise when the Dr. told me I had it. I have taken a couple of spills since taken this pill. No broken bones. I am 83. My advice, take the damn pill. Jerry OCtoolguy and ChelCass 1 1 Quote

OCtoolguy Posted February 25, 2023 Author Report Posted February 25, 2023 I think you all misunderstood my meaning. I have been on thyroid every day since 91. No big deal, my thyroid died. I also have to put testosterone gel on daily because it was down to zero. Another drug is for the prostate. We watch Fox Business & News daily and they seem to be nothing but drug sponsored. Too many damned drugs. I will happily take whatever is prescribed if truly necessary. I also have osteoarthritis in both knees so I take occasional meloxicam for inflammation & pain. Along with vitamins and other supplements it seems like all we do is take pills. I would smoke the glorious weed if it wasn't so expensive. Thanks for all your input. I will start the Fosamax asap. Because of my missing thyroid the doc wants me to do a 24 hour urine capture & testing. That's more of a bother than anything. Having to deal with going to the pharmacy and lab a couple of times is a major headache because it's always a zoo there. Nothing is easy anymore so I must complain. You unlucky folks are my sounding board. Who else can I talk with? Thanks for being there everybody. Please know you are all loved and appreciated. XOXO ChelCass 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Ray do you take glucosamine and magnesium? This is what I take to help with the arthritis in my legs. I could walk with out using them. It's not a cure but it does help cut the pain back. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

I take 2 big tablets everyday that have glucosamine with MSM and I also take a magnesium pill everyday. The doc wants me to start taking calcium twice a day also. I take CoQ10, 300mg and vitamin D3 also. Trying to do all the right stuff. That's why I was surprised to find out that I had a problem. Other than the arthritis, I have a neuroma on the ball of my right foot that is probably my biggest problem. If I'm on my feet too long, it gets to burning so bad it feels like a torch being held to my number 2 & 3 toes. I've been putting off the surgery on that because of the 2 month recovery time. I was told I couldn't even drive for those 2 months. So, I'm trying to time that so as not to have it interfere with something else. I'm basically very healthy. A tad overweight I know but in fairly good shape. I was in much better shape prior to the Covid hoax(my opinion) shutting everything down. Because of that, I did way too much sitting and now I'm paying for it. I bought a treadmill but haven't gotten into a regimen regarding using it. Today may be the day. Maybe. Who knows? Sycamore67 Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Sorry people but I take a lot of pills for various things but I am not sharing my medical history on a public forum. All I will say is that I suffer pretty severe chronic pain. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

All I will say is that I suffer pretty severe chronic pain. I can feel for you as I used to have severe stress headaches. Not migraines but just as bad. The knotted muscles in my neck and shoulders would result in not being able to concentrate on anything. They got very bad and I would wake up with them. I finally got the right combination of pain killers and from that point on, I guess it was so comforting to know that I could kill the pain within minutes that the stress just went away. I haven't had one in over 5 years. Thank God. I will say a prayer for you that the pain subsides like mine did. Quote
TAIrving Posted February 26, 2023 Report Posted February 26, 2023 Old age is not for sissies! I too will turn 80 later this year, 1943 was a great year. Getting old was not my Plan A. Plan A was to stay young and healthy forever. That didn't work, so it is on to Plan B, which is to take whatever life throws at me, suck it up and keep chugging along. Roberta Moreton Posted February 26, 2023 Report Posted February 26, 2023 I never broke a bone, then I broke 2 in two years. The doctor put me on an injection every 6 months. I just had a scan and I don’t have to take the shot anymore. ChelCass, barb.j.enders, OCtoolguy and 1 other 3 1 Quote
