Tallbald Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 We are trying out several blade brands, TPI, configuration and such as we build our skillset. Both pinned style (for the Wen 16 inch Penny so enjoys) and plain end for our Jet 18 inch. So far have only purchased on Amazon. Been buying Olsen but hear of course great things about others here. What should a new scroller expect to pay for good blades if buying say, 36 or so at a time? I'm imagining that bulk above a certain point is cheaper on a per-blade price. Thanks for sharing insight. OCtoolguy Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 Most all of us buy in gross packs. Pegas I buy from Denny Knappen who owns Artcraftersonline.com and for those who buy Flying Dutchman either Wooden Teddybear or Mike's Workshop. Best price will be in the gross packs. TAIrving Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 $36.50 for a gross (12 dozen) of the best Pegas blades from Denny @Artcraftersonline.com; that works out to about 25 cents per blade. If you wish, he will probably let you buy a mix of different sizes. I prefer the MGT1 (for small, detailed work) and the MGT3 and MGT5 for most work. JessL, Tbow388, OCtoolguy and 1 other 3 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 I use the Flying Dutchman blades that I purchase from Mike's Workshop. He seems to have the best price for the blades I like. In all the years I have been scrolling I have only broken one blade. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

kmmcrafts Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 Really depends on the blade.. you mentioned buying Olsen blades so as an example the Olsen PGT blades are quite a lot more money than a regular reverse tooth or most any of the other blades they offer.. that said.. they ( in my experience ) last much longer too so as in many cases.. you get what you pay for.. If i remember correctly you're just in the learning stages of scroll sawing so I don't suggest buying by the gross just yet.. since you need to try several brands and styles of blades to "find what works for you and the products you'll be making " While a bit pricey sometimes but I suggest buying sample packs of various brands and styles to find that perfect blade for you.. and later down the line as you get more comfortable sawing and expand into more complex projects you may find that you'll switch out blade styles and or brands along the way.. so eventually you'll know what your go to blades will be and then you can buy bulk "gross" pricing. I think the sample packs offer 6 blades of each size.. Olsen blades aren't bad.. and many people like them.. I started out using them and then moved onto Flying Dutchman blades.. for me the FD blades seemed to last longer for the type of cutting I did at the time.. Now I use Pegas from Dennys site even though I have several gross of FD blades laying around I just prefer to use the Pegas.. they seem to cut better for me and last longer.. your style of cutting may give you a different experience.. that's why I suggest buying sample packs of different styles and sizes.. If you work with mostly thicker stock you may not need to buy the smaller sized samples.. I think there are small sized #2/0 - #2 and larger sized sample packs #3 - #7 etc. ? Denny Knappen Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 If you check my website, I list lot of 3 packs/12 or 36 blades on all sizes. These are 10% less than the 3 packs of 12 purchased individually. Many customers like the Pegas MGT blades and at $11.07 per lot of 3 packs/12 it comes to 0.3075 per blade. There is flat rate shipping of $4 and free shipping on orders over $50. GrampaJim, OCtoolguy, kmmcrafts and 4 others 5 2 Quote

Gonzo Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 I like to buy from Denny Knappen. I call him, we visit a bit, I place my order and it shows up in my mailbox 3 or 4 days later. His prices are , in my opinion, very fair. $4.00 for shipping, you can’t beat that. Jim McDonald, OCtoolguy and ChelCass 2 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 (edited) I have cut with just about everything except PS blades, including some pretty shabby hardware store blades. You need to get sample packs where you can and actually take good notes recording: species, thickness, type of cut (simple, complex, etc) and other variables. 95% of my stuff is cut with Pegas, but I still have a few FD and Olson blades I fall back on from time to time. You will devise a blade strategy based on speed, feed and species. It may develop tomorrow or it may take a bit. But, you will get the feel. And blades and sandpaper are the least expensive part of this hobby/craft. Edited March 10, 2023 by Jim McDonald OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Tallbald Posted March 10, 2023 Author Report Posted March 10, 2023 These are all very helpful replies and I thank each of you. Bookmarking this thread for my reference. We've accumulated maybe 35 to 40 blades total and I've made sure they are labeled in test tubes by brand and style. I need to be making written notes as suggested though because there are just too many combos blade/TPI/style/ brand/species/thickness to keep filed in my Old Bald Fat Man brain. Don. Dak0ta52 Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 Seems I'm with the majority here in that I use Pegas blades from Denny (www.arcraftersonline.com). He has always given me excellent service and a very reasonable price. He also has a loyal customer program where you can receive blades free after purchasing a certain amount. I will say I started with Olsen blades but after going to Pegas I haven't even looked for another brand. I typically use small blades, 2/0, 0, 1, in spiral, MGT and skip tooth. It depends on what I'm cutting as to what blade selection I choose. I do a lot of large fretwork and on those I use the spirals. If I'm cutting plaques or boxes, I either use the MGT or skip tooth. I find the MGT cuts faster than the skip tooth. If I'm cutting something that has to be very accurate, I'll use the skip tooth to slow the cut. I believe Denny also offers a Pegas blade sample pack. Regardless, he has great knowledge in scrolling and at the very least can offer excellent suggestions on appropriate blade choices. Tbow388, ChelCass and OCtoolguy 3 Quote

Tallbald Posted April 8, 2023 Author Report Posted April 8, 2023 Late note here. Talked with Denny at Artcrafters and placed a small order on Thursday 04/06/2023. My order will arrive tomorrow, Saturday (2 days later). Granted, I'm maybe 200 miles from Dayton, TN but that's excellent service! Have ordered a small selection of Pegas blades and the set of Pegas blade holders for one of Penny's and my saws. I'll take notes for myself as I experiment with the blades on different woods and thicknesses. I hope one day to maybe get a "feel" for blade selection like I seem to have with my old bandsaw. Not really the same thing but the best I can think of. Appreciate everyone's help. Oh, and the prices Denny offers combined with the very attractive mailing costs helps me a great deal. Don. Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted April 8, 2023 Report Posted April 8, 2023 I almost always buy by the gross. It is cheaper. The only times I don’t is to try something new (just started trying coin cutting) or trying a new type of blade. They don’t eat anything, they don’t go bad, and they are small. A gross fits is the same bag as a dozen. Quote
