Tallbald Posted May 21, 2023 Report Posted May 21, 2023 I believe this has been discussed at some time but cannot recall final advice. As I've grown I see my need for a fine, soft and flexible sanding mop to use at low speed in my lathe or drill press which will let me break sharp corners of toys and puzzle pieces. Very difficult for me to use sandpaper for hand sanding like this. Hopefully someone here has good experience they can share (brand, etc) with just such a mop, and hopefully it's available on Amazon ( nothing available locally here). Thanks you all as always. Don. don in brooklin on Posted May 21, 2023 Report Posted May 21, 2023 (edited) I use a Mac Mop on nearly every project I do. I have a 180 grit installed on an old 1750rpm motor. Sits right beside my Scroll Saw. Not cheap but they do last a long time. Available here https://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/parmm072/ They have various grits too. You don't say where you are located but shipping in the USA is on $9.99. International shipping is available too but expensive. I forget what the cost was going to be so I had it shipped to someone visiting the US. Edited May 21, 2023 by don in brooklin on OCtoolguy, Scrappile and JessL 2 1 Quote
scrollerpete Posted May 21, 2023 Report Posted May 21, 2023 I would also agree with Don best thing that Ihave purchased for the shop. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted May 21, 2023 Report Posted May 21, 2023 (edited) I also agree. I have three grits and use the 180 most. I sands like a nice 220 grit paper Edited May 22, 2023 by Scrappile OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 If you're in the US, Klingspor makes several mops in various grits. I use a 240 in my drill press for fuzzies and a general "polish" on all my ornaments. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Dave Monk Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 I have many different kinds and use them all for various things. This is one that is seldom mentioned that I really like to use on puzzle pieces. I buy them a dozen at a time and get them really reasonable. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 I did not read the "and on Amazon" part. Sorry. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 There are sanding mops and flap sanders on Amazon. I don’t buy mine there. If you just want to break the edges, go with a fine grit. I use a 220 grit sanding mop from Klingspor’s. I have never bought one from Amazon. Jim McDonald and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Tallbald Posted May 23, 2023 Author Report Posted May 23, 2023 Say. Thank you each and all for taking time to help me with your answers. I have some studying to do. Don OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Gonzo Posted May 23, 2023 Report Posted May 23, 2023 How about making your own? Much much less expensive. I picked up a roll of 2.5” sandpaper and cut the strips 5.5”. I then sandwich 5 or 6 pieces between scrap wood and then every 1/4” I cut in about 2”. Hopefully that makes sense. I use my somewhat dull scrollsaw blades for this. At the same time I’ll drill the 3/8” hole. I use 3/8 threaded rod as a mandrel. When assembling I take two pieces back to back and slide them on rod. The next set I put them on about 30 degrees to the last one. keep adding until you get as thick as you desire. I then “soften”the edges using a scrap piece of wood. Peter N White Posted May 23, 2023 Report Posted May 23, 2023 Great tip thanks for sharing. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Denny Knappen Posted May 30, 2023 Report Posted May 30, 2023 I also use the Mac Mop mentioned above. I use the 240 and keep old ones if I want a finer finish. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted May 31, 2023 Report Posted May 31, 2023 I buy mandrels from H/D for about $6. Then I buy the refill packs from Klingspor for about $18 ea. I gave 3 different grits. Quote

Tallbald Posted June 1, 2023 Author Report Posted June 1, 2023 Hmm. Did a search at the Home Depot website but I guess I'm not looking for the right thing. Appreciate all the replies. Don. Quote
