I have been scanning patterns to save them. I also will modify some to make other items.

One thing I have done is taking the puzzle patterns to make racks. What I noticed is that the original pattern is smaller. I tried taking a pattern, scanning it and then print the PDF file. When i compare the two (holing up to the light) the printed PDF is smaller than the original. I have tried everything and looked at all settings. I cannot find any settings on the printer or Acrobat that I can find that changes anything. Looking at the print preview it looks smaller. I have tried cutting the pattern out and scanning just the pattern (not the whole page), saving it to pdf and then printing the pdf. still the same.

Is this normal or am i missing something?

Thanks

You need to make sure that your printer is printing at full size. Different programs and printers use different terms in settings. Sometimes you have to go into advanced settings or pull-down menus to check items.

Make sure it’s not being scaled down automatically by listing to “fit to page,” this will often scale it down some, or check if it lists percentage size to print and make sure it’s 100%, check if it’s automatically adding margins, etc. Usually when it is not printing “full size” it’s due to a setting when you are sending to print and sometimes it’s hard to figure it out.  There are a variety of different methods and terms used unfortunately so you always have to keep an eye out. 🙃

I don’t use Acrobat so I’m not sure where to tell you to look more closely at. What Acrobat software version are you using? What printer are you using? Are you using PC or Mac computer?

see if this page helps any:

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/scale-or-resize-printed-pages.html

from this, you would want to select “none” on scaling to keep at 100%.

I use Acrobat Reader and it has a number of options.  To put in actual size or fit page or enlarge a little.

If larger than 8 1/2 x 11 (in my case) I use the poster feature.  You can enlarge there too.

I also find my scanner distorts the picture a little too so I take jpg into Inkscape and trace bit map and then make correct size.

Thanks for the info but have tried and look at all those settings.

If you look at the preview when printing the pdf you can see a border around the document. For some reason it will not go to the edge and that appears to be the issue. Not sure how to correct.

The only thing I can think of is to increase the scaling to see what I get.

Doing some experimenting if I change the scale to 102.5% the print will match the original.

So if I scan a pattern to a pdf and then print the pdf it changes slightly along the way. Not sure why or what setting is messed up but that is what i have found.

I have had issues like this in the past.  I dislike the scanning software that comes from any scanner especially HP.  I scan with a Brother multifunction laser printer.

I use a program called Vuescan for all scanning and no issues.  It will work with any scanner and lets you scan to whatever format you want.

I bought the professional version which is now $99.  It was less when I bought it.  The reason I bought that version was I needed to scan slides on a Nikon Coolscan 5000.  I had over 2000 slides to scan and used an auto feed on the scanner.  I now just use it on my flatbed scanner and a photo scanner. It has worked extremely well.  I also get lifetime updates.

Customer service has been great and get responses back from the developer very quickly.  If you do much scanning or want to scan old photos, it is worth it.

I absolutely hate the scanning software that comes with scanners.  I will never own a HP.printer/scanner again.

Me thinks this discussion should have been the year before last.. I had 100's of slides and I wanted to put them on a hard drive for my kids... My daughter bought me a little thing to do it with, on slide at a time... Took me a long time and I worked hard at it.  Got it done, not sure if the kids have even looked at them.

And @Sycamore67 I agree.  I have a HP printer "scanner".  No soft ware on the printer to scan, I have to go their site to scan things.  So I got my old broken HP printer/scanner and put it by my desk just to scan with.  I has software to do it and does a good job.

The problem with scanning all your slides or pictures is how do you organize them.  I not only scanned my slides but also my pictures which I had hundreds and hundreds.  I used an Epson photo scanner that you could load a stack of photos into it.

I used the Vuescan software for both the slide and photo scanner.

Probably has to do with pixels setting in the scan software? I get this ( or used too) as well when printing a scanned item, however most patterns now days I just run through inkscape and make whatever size I am needing. For instance a lot of the animal puzzle patterns from Scott.. I print as they are send to me in the download from his site, but if I'm making a clock, key rack, or ornament I make the pattern in inkscape and size it how I need it to be to fit the page and save it as a PDF so I can make copies when / if needed again without resizing and all the fuss and piecing papers together etc.

But anyway, I have experienced the scans being different sized etc.. never figured out why but also never really tried to figure out why either, LOL.. I just resized in inkscape and saved it how I needed it to be.

Edit: Tried posting this yesterday morning but internet went down. Lucky me it saved my reply.

Never had an issue when printing the original PDF. As Kevin mentioned when you resize the project it's never a problem.

I was taking the original file and then adding something like a name. I would just save as a PDF and then print. Never thought the original was changed as i did not change the scale of the project. For some reason it looked different so I started comparing them and found the difference.

In the future I just have to be aware of the difference and change the print scale.

PDF is not an image format. It is a container. Putting your scanned image inside a PDF only adds a layer of complication to the process.

A scanner produces a bitmap image. You can save it to any number of bitmap formats. I prefer a jpg for scanned patterns. I edit the pattern with Gimp if it needs it and then use Inkscape to trace it and save it as an SVG file. At this point, you can resize to any size you need.

I have a Brother all-in-one color laser printer that does a great job but as you said, the software leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks for the info.
