barb.j.enders Posted December 27, 2023 Report Posted December 27, 2023 I asked for, and received the flex drum sanding kit. https://store.workshopsupply.com/catalogue/flex-drum-sander-kit-p-4539.html. I will have to purchase a bench grinder to use it. I plan on buying this, https://www.professionalgrinding.ca/products/king-canada-8-low-speed-bench-grinder-with-light-model-kc-895ls?pr_prod_strat=e5_desc&pr_rec_id=e46011855&pr_rec_pid=6732380864567&pr_ref_pid=6745828327479&pr_seq=uniform. I also have a sanding mop that I have been using in my drill press but hope to use the bench grinder.https://stockroomsupply.com/products/fluffy-sanding-mop-kit?_pos=1&_sid=5e3e23ee0&_ss=r My question is, how will it attach to the bench grinder? TAIrving Posted December 27, 2023 Report Posted December 27, 2023 Congratulations on your Christmas present. What are you planning to do with it? Intarsia maybe? I have been looking at intarsia videos and have seen drum sanders like this. barb.j.enders 1 Quote

don in brooklin on Posted December 27, 2023 Report Posted December 27, 2023 (edited) Congratulations. I could not do without it. I did a video on the sanding station years ago. At the time I had a wonder wheel on one end and the drum sander on the other. Now I have a sanding mop. I went with a 6 inch grinder. An 8 inch is a better choice as it is easier to find the chuck. (I got mine from Stockroom supply). See picture. I use keyless chuck on the grinder and an old motor. https://youtu.be/43HcrhpynsI?si=bmvHPNj1fF5DJnJ5 Edited December 28, 2023 by don in brooklin on TAIrving, barb.j.enders and Fab4 3 Quote
TAIrving Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Thanks for posting Don @don in brooklin on. I am just starting to think about getting into intarsia and this helps me with the sanding part of it. barb.j.enders 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 @don in brooklin on have a question about your chuck used on the grinder. I purchased on like it from some where, and the piece that slips over the shaft was not deep enough to clear the threads on the shaft, therefore it wobbled. Did you have that problem? If so how did you fix it? Or maybe you shafts did not have threads. Quote
Solution don in brooklin on Posted December 28, 2023 Solution Report Posted December 28, 2023 There is a shaft that fits over the threads and then held on with set screws. The link at Stockroom is https://stockroomsupply.com/products/keyless-chuck?_pos=4&_sid=eb28da5e6&_ss=r Quote
Peter N White Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Would love to have one but shipping to NZ would be a killer. I cobbled one up by getting a sanding sleeve and got a piece of plumbers insulation to fit sanding sleeve and made a wooden centre shaft to fit tight inside insulation tube and use it on my lathe.Works well. Quote
rafairchild2 Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 It makes a LOT of dust. Make sure you have a good collection point at the sander. Don has a good example in his photo of what you need. barb.j.enders 1 Quote

That thought occured to me also. Maybe mount one on a lathe or even a drill press. Quote

I think the heat from cutting it off messed up the bearing. I ended up having one made that was deeper and would go past the threads onto the shaft. Works like a champ. Scrappile 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted December 30, 2023 Report Posted December 30, 2023 Now I remember I asked this question before and I remember Daves answer. It was pretty expensive to have something made as I remember. I guess I do not understand why this is such a problem with all the people that want to use a grinder for this purpose. The Guinevere is the oblivious answer but it only comes with one speed: high speed, and I do not want that. Why us it not available in a low speed. Quote

Product is $35, shipping is $20. At this time, there isn't anything else that I need from Stockroom. Kinda wish that Workshop Supply carried it, seeing as how they are the ones that carry the Flex Drum set. Quote

I keep saying I will stop doing this, but then one like this comes along. I suspect that you meant "obvious". But "oblivious" works also but with a very different and amusing meaning. don in brooklin on Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 (edited) If your intent is to get into intarsia eventually you may want to get a wonder wheel. I got one when I visited JGR studio and I was impressed with what Judy could do with the wheel. The wonder wheel fits on any grinder with the help of a reducing bushing. Since Intarsia is not on my to do list right now I had a sanding mop on the other end as you described above. I found that I did not use it much as I have a Mac Mop mounted on a motor. So... I have been using the Mac Mop to round over a bunch of dowels but since it difficult to obtain a Mac Mop and I don't want to wear it out. I changed out the sanding mop for a flap wheel sander that I got from Amazon. It is 120 grit and it does the job really quick. Would round over quick on Intarsia too. I am now running my sanding mop on an extra drill press. Edited January 5, 2024 by don in brooklin on barb.j.enders 1 Quote
