don in brooklin on Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 Haven't been doing much scrolling but have been busy making ribbon racks for my Grandson's baseball teams. I donated the material for the first 12 and the club will pay for the material for any more. They are now thinking about the selling price and the quantity they think they may want. I have jigs all set up for the drilling of the holes but the thing that is most time consuming is sanding the dowels. Can't find non fluted 2 inch dowels. If we go into big production the boys will come and do a lot of the work. I usually make ribbon rack that do in to the silent auctions. See red one below. I personalize with the players name when sold. MarieC, Fab4, jollyred and 2 others 5 Quote
rjweb Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 Very nice and for a good cause, RJ Quote
Millwab Posted December 30, 2023 Report Posted December 30, 2023 (edited) Don, the red one looks like you used shaker pegs instead of plain dowels. If these are too costly couldn’t you just buy a length of dowel rod and cut off 2” increments? That way you wouldn’t have to sand them smooth. Edited December 30, 2023 by Millwab Quote

I have found my scroll saw does a wonderful job cutting dowel rod. If you want a bit of chamfer on the end of the peg, a manual twist style pencil sharpener will take the edges off in just a couple of turns. Quote
don in brooklin on Posted January 1, 2024 Author Report Posted January 1, 2024 Thanks for the ideas. I am using 3/8 dowels and don't fit my pencil sharpeners. Neat if they did. I set up a jig on my table saw using 7 1/2 blade which has a really small kerf. The dowels fall away so no safety issue. I have been quickly sanding one end with my Mac Mop and it works out just fine but is just time consuming. (Done 200 little dowels so far) I have completed 12 Racks so far and they go on sale next week so we will see. Quote
rafairchild2 Posted January 1, 2024 Report Posted January 1, 2024 I built a quick and easy jig for cutting dowels and axles. Only $10 for the plans Quote

I had an old "pencil" sharpener for makeup that had two different sizes. Just a thought! Quote
meflick Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 Or maybe a larger crayon sharpener Quote
