I have many physical problems,, I know hard to believe from those those that are around me and see how handsome and mobil I still am at 80 but to be honest  I MAYBE  slowing down a little or maybe a lot, but I keep on and here is my experience with my new old man Ego Battery powered weed cutter.  This is the only one I have tried so read about others.... But I am Hummm pleased so far and the only question in my mind is the so far.. but at 80 how long do I need it of work''

What I like:
no gas to deal with

No mixing gas to deal with

starts when I squeeze the trigger  no cranking hoping it starts,, this time

I cut all my " whole garden area and more outside the fence with one 14' piece of line and still going.  No breaks, not having to respool, just keep cutting. And till have longer to go I guess.

no taping the cutter head to get more line,, it does it auto.

If I had to reload the line no hand cranking the spool. just feed the line through the head the cutter head press a button and let it load itself auto and so nice.

If it quits running no filling more gas, just switch the batteries and go..

Runs longer even on the smaller battery than a tank of gas!

Plenty of power seems to get clogged up much less than my stihl gas one

Quiet enough that I do not need to wear hearing protection.

Dislikes can not list because some would think them political.  but producing and disposing of these batteries is not pretty.

I have a Ryobi cordless string trimmer, I like it for the same reasons you like your Ego, but my battery is really lacking ( 2 amp/hr ).

I also have a Cub Cadet 4 cycle gas trimmer with the quick tach accessories, and I have several of the accessories. When I first started buying  the accessories they were all interchangeable, now all the various battery powered system are coming out with their own proprietary systems that are not interchangeable,  and because of that I won't be buying into any of the new systems.

among the accessories that I have:

rototiller

hedge trimmer

blower

"string" trimmers  X2

brush cutters  X2

There is a lot to like about battery powered OPE.  Hopefully, as the market moves in that direction, they will continue to make significant improvements in battery technology.  Retailers are already moving away from gasoline powered equipment.  Home Depot announced that 85% of their OPE will be battery powered by 2028.  Like it or not, as far as they average consumer is concerned, the small, 2 cycle engine is going to go away sooner rather than later.

I know a lot of single mom's ( not like that guys 🤣 happily married here ) that don't know how to do the upkeep of gas mowers etc.. and there really is nothing to do on a cordless mower and trimmer but use it and then charge it. Here in the northern states we don't run our mowers at all for about 4-6 months and most people seem to leave whatever gas in it that they didn't use for the next year.. most times in the spring these lady's  and men not just the lady's so not picking on them at all can't get them to start.. Many are going to these cordless for this reason alone.

I'd like to try one someday but for me.. I have little over 2 acres of land and about 1.75 is lawn.. I'd have to mow everyday of the week to use a battery mower or get 4 extra batteries.. most of the price of these things is the battery.

I'm with you Ray @OCtoolguy on the HF battery stuff.. they do have several different brands of battery stuff. I have the Bauer brand stuff and so far the leaf blower has held up great for over 2 years now and we use that thing way more than I ever thought.. does great at blowing the light fluffy snow off the cars, walkway, and patio etc in the winter.. blow the sawdust out of the shop etc. The 4'1/2 in grinder has impressed me with the power and battery life. I left a poor review of the flex shaft tool when I was trying to use it with a saw blade but I have since used it with some small grinder wheels and cut off wheels etc and it has done great with that smaller chores. I was probably asking too much of it with that saw blade on it. I'm thinking since I have the batteries I told the wife last week I was thinking about getting the trimmer.. there are several other cordless tools I'd like to get from them as well.. They've all been great for what I've needed them for so far.

I got rid of most of my corded power tools. It's nice to be untethered. I love my Exmark mower. Just waiting for them to make an electric one I can afford.

Yes, I've always wanted standardized batteries. We'll never see them, though. There are knock-off replacement batteries for almost all brands of tools. I always believe you get what you pay for but for the home do-it-yourself er, these batteries will probably get the job done.

Ha, I have been doing just the opposite, reason, I have a cordless drill but all other little hand tools I have purchased corded.  I use them in my little shop 99% of the time.  Corded are much cheaper than the cordless, and at 80 the years I have left doesn't bother me to have to worry about cords in my shop.  In my younger days I did cordless.  And yes they are far more convenient.  But as a poor old man.. I'd rather spend my money on food and wood.  Exception will be tool used outside, like the weed cutter.  Saving up for an EV wheel chair, I guess.

Me to has gone to battery powered tools for outdoor work,
first I tried was a small chainsaw it’s only a 18V but it’s for small jobs
like cutting limbs and taking down small brushes and I don’t want to bring out
the big gas saw for what.
So far I am very pleased and it does its job well and is so easy to take along what
I also take it along for camping trips to cut small dead wood for campfire,
just bring extra batteries for overnight trips!

@Charlie E  This the one I ordered.  I saw it other places for the same price, but this deal included two batteries. A 4Amp and a 2.5 Amp.  This will be about the same weight as your Stihl, I have a strap for mine. I did not order the Ego strap I had a couple of them already.    The charger seems to charge the batteries in less than an hour. I find the Ego feels balker than my stihl, which it is but I am getting use to it.
