  2. Tennessee Magnets my design. Unknown wood 1/4" x 1 3/4" x 5 3/4" backed by 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood stained black. I used a 1/4" Rare Earth Magnet on the back. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT Blades. After a light sanding with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac, another light sanding, and another dipping. Comments welcome.

  3. For my wife's birthday, I went to Hallmark to buy a card. A cute card that pops up (her fav) was nearly $8 + tax CAD or $6 US The regular cards that are supposed to be funny but not at all were $5 -$6. So the cheapo in me said I can make a card. Done it before and she seemed to like them. So I then spent probably 3 hours or more designing, cutting and painting. Return is about $2 per hour. Not bad for an old retired guy. LOL She liked it anyways. Size is 5 x 8 to fit envelope PS: The heart and maple leaf matched the sweat shirt I had stitched.

  5. Since I use the angle setting I quite often, I noticed that the table got a bit of play in it after I tighten the hold knob. It about 0.4 degrees. So I noticed saw dust in the guide track. I removed the table. I saw a nut missing from the back side that hold the plastic guide on. I figured out that cap nut was not the problem. Then took off the guide bracket. Cleaned out the aluminum track with small art paint brush. Lots of dust. But noticed a bit more purple heart dust. Purple heart does have oil. Anyway cleaned out dust. Took 600 grit paper to aluminum sliding surface just to help scratch off oil residue. Applied Johnson wax to all sliding surfaces. And put it back together. Smooth operation no wiggle after tightning the front knob. Replaced the back cap screws. They act only as a lock nut for the Alan screws that go into the plastic slider. These assert pressure on the plastic guide to spread the plastic for a slight friction on aluminum. I waxed the top table for good measures.

I ran into a friend the other week. She is a member of the Prairie Canada Carvers Association http://prairiecanadacarvers.com/. They are having their annual competition/show this weekend. She talked me into submitting a couple of my intarsia pieces for judging. Dropped them (Dogwood Flowers and Angelfish) off last night. Pick up on Sunday. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend any part of the show due to another competition going on. For those that don't know, I am also a competitive synchronized swimmer and we have a major competition this weekend.

    Our Wedding

Just finished this wedding piece my my cousin. Made out of oak with a few coats of poly on it. The lettering I cut out of Walnut. I used Steve Goods keychain software to cut the lettering. I want to thank Don who redid the pattern I had on here with the butterflies. I did make the bottom a little longer to fit all the lettering on.

I had the same issue with "the wrong blade installed when I needed" My solution: I bought a second band saw from them (GO555) and installed a 1/2"resaw blade on one and a 3/16" blade for curvy cuts on the other one. Works well for me. I also have two belt sanders from harbor freight , each with differents belt grits that I buy locally. (not at Harbor freight)

Thank you all for the encouraging words. Here is a video of my swim. I am the one with the black suit and cap. It was not my best swim. I got turned around on one of the moves. I don't know where we placed, we didn't hang around. There was another team from Thunder Bay that included a 72 year old man. VID-20250413-WA0004.mp4

  33. 35 years you probably talk people into buying stuff they don't even have interest in, LOL... I doubt that but if it was a sale they had their input. Probably made many sales by helping people decide. I know the fruit baskets I make many people could not decide weather a large one or smaller one would be right for them. Also the color choices. But that is what a sales person does. I still believe though the amount of scrollers has dropped over the years and the surveys can not justify that. Personalizing things has always been a positive thing in sales because of the obvious. But there always was and still is a market for the unusual and that is what we try to sell. The things not found in stores like Walmarts and Hobby Lobbies of the world. Our society has become so fast paced that people just do not have the time for crafting any more. I stayed away from personalizing and the few times I did it did not mean huge sales. Many ways to personalize items and have seen them done at shows in front of people. A good friend of mine and her and her sister went to alot of the shows I did so I did see first hand her sales. She made kids bibs and a few other things but the bibs were a huge hit each and every show and she would get lots of orders. She could sell hundreds at one show. They all had names on them. All she had was a blue design for boys and pink for girls and kept that same design for many years and still does from what I know. But they were all hand sewn. Simple design so she could make them easily. She would have different names on all of them and tried keeping up with the ever changing list of names. That was a lucrative business for sure. She had a gold mine. But again shows caught up with them and moved apart and business is run by only one of the sisters who moved to Florida. Finding that one thing can make a world of difference in sales. I could never just make one thing. I have a very active mind and like to make new and different things. That worked for me in my sales. I reached a broader audience. I would hope the scrolling world is making a come back but just do not see it.

  35. Call Bushton Mfg with the model and serial numbers. They can tell you when it was manufactured and other useful information about it. And you can find the User's Manual for it on their website. The lady who answers the phone (I think her name is Hope) is very pleasant.

  37. Hey Everyone! In this fun video catered to new scrollers, we take a single scroll saw pattern and use it in multiple ways. It is my hopes, that this video encourages people to think outside of the box when approaching scroll saw patterns and projects. The design I use, is from the Christian And Inspirational Pattern Book By Fox Chapel Publishing. Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

  39. Do you have the original owners' Manual ? That usually has the year of the saw. Does the saw use barrel style clamps of square block style? Is the motor AC or DC? This will help. You can always call Bushton Manufacturers to get exact date. Give them serial number. You can go to their web site and look up the manual under the serial number and it will get you close. As far a price to sell at, condition means alot along with age. But I would say a good number would be $400 to $500 if fairly new and does not have the questionable motors. http://www.bushtonmanufacturing.com/Blades.html

    Spiral dragons

I've got five of these cut and only one is really useable. It's okay as this was a test of my limits and the materials limitations. All the tails broke at 11" (out of 14") , so I think that's the limit, for now. Many of the smaller details broke, so I'll limit myself to closed edge patterns for now. I still like the concept, now to adjust some patterns

    An Awesome Day

Yesterday was an awesome scrolling day for me. I was actually able to spend most of the day at my Hawk saw, and it was incredible. I've had the Hawk about a year now and it did not start good. I'd been using a Delta P-20 that I got back in late 1998 and that's all I used until my daughter asked if she could have the Delta , I taught her on it when she was about 8. So faced with getting a replacement, and the Hawk is something I've always wanted for as long as I've been scrolling, I found this one. After I got it home I really wasn't impressed. You see with the Delta I was a die hard top feed for the blade, for more than 20 years. The Hawk, while it can top feed, fir me it was difficult if not impossible. Fast forward a year and I finally found a groove with the Hawk which is what lead to yesterday's awesome scrolling day, the result of which you can see from my dust tray I have under the cutting table on the Hawk. After a rough start a year ago, the Hawk is now my number 1 saw!

    What a change

It's 52F here at 8:00AM. It is a beautiful, sunny day. The pollen is thick and the weeds are growing, lots of yard work out there waiting for me. You can laugh at me later this year when it is too hot to go outside. Our winters here are as short and mild as are your summers and our summers are as long and harsh as are your winters. But this time of year is lovely.

  50. This is just the latest process that I'm using. It's constantly evolving and I'm looking forward to seeing any ideas from other scrollers that might improve on it. Getting new ideas and learning new tricks is something that I have always enjoyed about meeting other woodworkers and seeing their work. Applying The Pattern Affix your pattern to the wood. This is a Celtic cross design from Sue Mey that I like. Interior Cuts Make your interior cuts. I use an air compressor to blow the dust out of the wood. Then I cover the face of the design with a double layer of packing tape to use as a backer for the resin. Resin Dam I use common plumber's putty to build a (dam) around the design. Epoxy After trying many different brands. I found the Promise brand deep pour tabletop epoxy works best for me. I also use a digital scale to make sure that I get an exact 50/50 mix to the gram. Dyes & Powders I use Alumilite dyes and powders. Adding Color It doesn't take much of either. 1 drop of the dye and just a little of the gold and green powders. The amount of powder shown here is about twice the amount needed. Mixing When you are mixing. Mix the resin and colors slowly while scraping the sides and bottom of the container. Try to keep the air bubbles to a minimum. Pour Then slowly pour the mixture trying to fill all the holes evenly. Popping Air Bubbles Once poured. I use a cheap hair dryer to heat the resin and get as many bubbles out as I can. Let The Epoxy Cure I let it sit for 24-36 hours to harden. I keep my shop around 70 degrees. Trimming The Epoxy After the has hardened, I remove as much of the plumber's putty as I can and run it through my planer to level the back surface down to the clean wood. I make very shallow passes. Maybe 1/32 at a time. Exterior Cuts Now I drill an entry hole and make the exterior cuts. Support Material I save the wood from the outside of the design and peel all the tape off. I put the piece back into the wood that I cut it from and tape the back side to hold it. This is to protect the piece while running it back through the planer. Final Planing Then I lightly shave the front of the piece down until I get it down to clean wood. Finishing Then remove the piece and sand. I start with 100, 220, 320, 400, 600, and finish with 800. Once done you can apply the finish of your choice. I use clear polyurethane. Final Project I hope you enjoyed reading about my process and I look forward to seeing the projects you make. The next photo is a different cross but shows what it looks like when finished.
