I can't remember if I showed this before. My Grandson and I made it for a project he had to do about Rome a couple of years ago. Griff wanted make a Trireme, but after a bit of discussion and looking at pictures he changed his mind, thankfully Poppy and Griffin got top marks I can't find any stills. if I took any. 00002.mp4

    THINK in 3D

Just finished this 3D cutout. This was my first project with Pegas blades. I really like how smooth and crisp the blade left the wood. Still getting used to how the blades cut as opposed to Flying Dutchman. Looking forward to experimenting more with the Pegas.

Hi All, Just finished the Panda pattern I had lying around. Don't know who designed this but it was easy as a Segmentation and painted. Don W

  5. I had this 50th Anniversary pattern by Sue Mey, but I needed a 25th Anniversary. I enlarged some numbers I had for the Wedding Rings and they fit perfectly. Cut on the Pegs Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. I should have this finished tomorrow and in the mail Friday.

  6. Well this gong won't ring out and it is decorated to be a table ornament. I cut mine from a couple of different woods. The frame was cut from alder and stained lightly. The gong itself is cut from spalted maple. The base if plain ol' pine painted a deep red. I also put a backer on the gong and painted it the same color as the base, giving the whole project the feel of the ancient past. I used some of that copper wire that is wrapped around those scroll saw blades when you buy a pack. Makes a nice invisible hanger. Makes a nice decoration for those into art of the orient. Download

  7. I have glued up many bits and pieces to make blocks for these Steve Good 3D Bird Houses. I got lots of practice with my plane and bench hook. These are all wood reclaimed from discarded furniture. Poplar and mystery wood from Indonesia. I discovered than my smoother plane does a great job of removing paint.

  8. I found 1-1/2x1-1/2 inch poplar and oak at Lowe's. Home Depot didn't have any square stock. I bought all the straight poplar pieces. That should do me for a while.

I've made a few and those have either been pine or basswood. I find that basswood works well on the scroll saw, nice fine grain and easy cutting.

  10. I used all pieces of scrap wood that I have in my scrap box, mix and match wood of different thickness to get the size required for the bird houses. This way you get all kind of different colours, the front might be cherry, the back Walnut that is the beauty of cutting them. Your cost on wood is really nothing better use than the wood stove. Just let your mind explore all the possibilities.

trustone is a crushed stone composite material. best source I have found is: https://www.randbcrafts.com/items/tru-stone-blanks/ it polishes up really nice, although it's sometimes had to hold onto the little birds while polishing (some of them take flight when grabbed by the polishing wheel on my drill press)

    Panda finished

I think this is really a Segmentation. It is something similar to Intarsia but it only uses one piece of wood, ie the pattern is one piece and glued on to a large enough piece of wood and then cut out. With this method the parts all (mostly) fit together. I use a KIRJES Inflatable Drum Sander for the majority of my sanding and then use old fashioned elbow grease. I would recommend trying Segmentation as there are some simple designs that give a perfect piece at the first try. take care Don W

Looking good Don. I have only done a few pieces of Intarsia. Have segmented Santa down the shed I cut about 10 years ago and lost a piece. He is in a box. Don't know why I keep this type of stuff

That may be the ultimate solution for me. I can mill my wood, but I don't have a local source.

I can't buy much of anything locally. Certainly not rough lumber. The nearest place I can get hardwoods other than the big box stores is 125 miles away. I have never seen 1-1/2-inch lumber in Lowe's or Home depot, perhaps because I wasn't looking for it.

  42. I get most of my wood from a place that sells hardwood lumber and cabinet grade plywood. There sell rough cut thicker stock either 6/4 or 8/4. In a pinch Lowes and Home Depot sells poplar and oak that is 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". Cost is about $6.00 for a 36" piece.

  43. I purchase turning stock from Ocooch Hardwoods. I just got Ash and can make 3 from one piece. But then again, I don’t have any equipment to mill to size.

Hey Robert, I usually have stock thick enough. It’s perfectly fine to glue up two 3/4” boards then plane or cut to 1 1/4” square. Just make sure you apply the pattern so the glue seam is on the side, not the front of the blank. The problem with using turning stock is it is usually cut on a band saw and aren’t always perfectly square. When cutting 3D items, you always want perfectly square Stock. Also, turning blanks are not kiln dried, so they may be to green. Ochooch Hardwoods sells 1 1/2” Blanks in any species Of wood they sell. They are perfectly square and kiln dried. The perfect solution! I like to use hard and soft woods such as Maple, walnut, mahogany, Cherry, Cedar and Redwood. I have even used Yellowheart, Redheart and Purpleheart although they tend to burn at that thickness.

  45. Since four of my shows have been canceled I have spent some time doing some things that I have wanted to do in a long time but have put off. I have a mini split heat pump in my shop for heating and cooling. It wasn't designed for a super dusty environment like my shop. It has a filter in it but not adequate. When in use I had to blow it out every other day with my air compressor. Came up with this idea. The box hangs on a cleat for easy removal. I used foam around the bottom to seal it up. Time will tell how it works. I also built this lumber rack on wheel which I desperately needed.

  46. A very humbling group of projects that everyone is doing. I've departed from scrollsawing a bit and am on a major restoration and refinishing of all our old furniture - (started long before the coronovirus crisis started) - the project on the go now is our dining room set - it's claim to fame is that we purchased it as an "antique" at the beginning of our marriage - we married in 1973 and think the set was probably made somewhere around 1920 - 1930 (ish) - in our almost 50 years of marriage since we've added a whole lot more "patina" - and decades of family memories. So far have the table is done - 3 chairs now on the go - all at different stages - after the chairs (6 of them) are done - then the hutch - and then manufacturing leaves for the table that disappeared long before we ever acquired the set. This project has introduced me to the world of HVLP spraying - not a tool I have ever used before - and - so far - a tool that I am having a tough time mastering ..... The work so far .... (chairs and hutch not yet started in these pictures) . Jay (EDIT: not sure why my pictures aren't showing up properly - they seem to be changing format from a JPEG to a JFIF file on their own when I try to attach them - no idea why .... so if you can't see them you'll just have to imagine they look GREAT!!)

  48. Because of the issues I have with my neck I rarely get to do scrollsawing. I have turned to other crafts/hobbies that are not so straining on my neck. I have many, many hobbies to keep me busy during this time so all is well. Yesterday we needs some groceries. Do NOT want to go into any stores we ordered our groceries on line from Walmart. They shopped for our requested groceries, bagged them and brought them out to our car and loaded them into our car. We were able to get what we needed and not endanger our health. Kudo's to Walmart.

  50. I have started to attempt things that I have not tried before and am unsure of. The first on my list is to master the use of epoxy with scroll sawn objects. I started this a couple of weeks ago and am documenting my successes and failures in the thread: In the meantime, here is a photo of my latest experiment which is currently underway: When (not if) I finally succeed, I will insert a photo of that project here: xxxxxxx
