1. Great work. Would go great in any room.
2. Great cut. Great symmetry on cut and base.
3. Great cuts. Nice clean detail.
4. I'm looking for suggestions on a good wood finish (clear gloss) that is fairly easy to apply and will give me a high luster finish. The weather here is finally getting to where it should be (mid 50's) during the day. Going outside to use a spray finish is out and I don't have a workshop where I can spray inside. I've been using MinWax polyacrylic brush on but I'm not happy with it. The other issue is a few of the pieces have small inside areas to finish (see pic). I really don't want to have to get in these areas to sand between coats. I'm not concerned with any finish that may darken the wood. All the pieces will be dark stained anyways. I've seen some great finishes that are used on things like wooden boxes. The final finish is deep and looks like glass. Thanks
5. Great design and cut. I like the bass...Reminds me that's spring is not to far away
6. That came out fantastic.
7. Great...I have a question for tonight! "Aligning multiple items in Inkscape" I'm working on a project and designing most of the patterns from scratch using IS. I made a spoke/handle for the pattern, copied as many as I needed and couldn't figure out how to evenly space the pieces around the circle (see pic). I ended up just eyballing them and combining them the best I could. When I cut the pattern I was off a bit. How would you align these pieces evenly in IS? Thanks! 8. Those came out great. I like the 3D effect on the ornaments. Those will be wonderful gifts.
9. Those are great. Like anything else you get better with practice. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Get the "feel" of how the blades cut on different types of wood. Just go with the flow
10. Hi Scrollwizard: That's great. It's usually Grampa and myself (when he has the time). Grampa is also from the UK. I believe it works out to around 2200hrs in the UK.
11. Hi All! It seems that a lot of people are unaware of the ability to send sounds in the chat room. When I'm on the pc (between 6 - 8 pm est daily) I usually log into the chat and leave the following message "send sound...surfen!" I've seen a few people (after the fact) come on and say hello then leave because they thought no one was there. If you see me logged in then go to the bottom of the chat box, click on the "musical note" icon and send a sound. Unless I'm indisposed, I'll come by and say hi.
12. Leave the protective sheet on the plastic. Then cover the plastic with duct tape then apply the pattern. As far as the blades there are a few choices. Check out the blade chart for suggestions. I use a medium speed which is about 600spm on my saw. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/yhst-75732684376772/Scroll-chart.pdf
13. A few years back I cut out the three bears w/table, chairs and mini plates then glued them to a base.
14. Hey Nicholas: I'm not sure about that particular combination (paint/finish). When I color my wood pieces I use acrylic paints. Then to seal the paint I use a spray "fixative." When dry I use a spray polyacrylic finish like Krylon matte or gloss clear. The fixative will keep the colors from "melting" when you apply the final finish.

Plaque

Great Piece! I like the way you used a torch to shade the ducks.
16. Great piece!
17. Ok...Hopefully there will be more people on. Grampa and I have been chatten the last few nights. What I started doing is log on to the chat when I'm at the PC and leave a message to send a "sound" when you come in. That way I can do whatever and hear if someone logs on.
18. That came out great! He will love it.
19. That's an excellent idea. Great work.
20. Excellent work!! I like the contrasting colors.
21. The weekend sounds good. Time is rough considering the different time zones. I'm in the US Eastern time zone.

Ring

Hi All: Yes, you can use a drill press and a woodboring bit to drill the center hole. I didn't have a ring sizer so I used a circle template. I cut the rough shape using my scrollsaw and a FD PSR#5 blade. I started the rough shaping and sizing with a dremel tool w/ a 120 grit sanding drum (small). I then used a 120 grit sanding pad to clean up the radius and get it closer to the correct size(purple). I switched to a 220 grit sanding sponge to shape the outer surfaces and edges (black). When I was satisfied with the overall look I went to a 320 grit sanding sponge to get close to the finished product (yellow). I finally finished using 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Except for the scrollsaw and dremel tool everything else was done by hand. I applied some MinWax natural stain for protection. When dried I applied some Johnson's paste wax. I didn't use any type of gloss clear coat because I thought that over time it would wear off or peel. Everything I used can be picked up at your local WalMart. I'm not quite sure about the best woods. This was my first try at it. Like mentioned, a tight grain hardwood should work great. The zebrawood sounds like a good choice. I think a big consideration would be the direction of the grain.
23. WOW!!! Fantastic!!! That is definitely a show piece. That should bring in some $$$$ for the holidays.

Ring

I tried Christina's idea about making rings with the scrollsaw. I had a piece of curly claro walnut that looked good for this project. Little did I know how hard this wood was. I went thru 4 blades just to split the piece in half. I then did the inside and outside cuts with the scrollsaw. I left a bit around the inside and outside of the ring for the final fitting/sanding. After final sanding, I applied some "natural" stain. Unfortunately it darkened the lighter areas a bit. Here's what I ended up with...
25. That would be fun.
