JT, I respect your opinions and value your wealth of knowledge, I guess I get a little touchy on the low end product bashing as many of us start out buying cheap tools.. I started my business with nothing but a freebie scroll saw and even some leftover scraps of plywood and built it up over the years.. When I started out I was using a block of wood and stapled sandpapers to it.. going from that to a power sander was night and day difference.. there is a reason for those HF stores.. not everyone can afford a cheap sander let alone a Festool sander.. I do realize that you get what you pay for.. just as one gets out of business what they put into it.. Again Kevin 2 ways to look at it. Many newbies don't know better and think cheap is as good as better. They wind up spending twice because the first broke down quickly. I wish I had people tell me there were better tools than Craftsman when I started out. These forums were not even around. Bought 2 routers and both broke within 2 years. Rest assured you will not hear another peep from me about HF or Walmart (oh yea same type of store for the same reason)

I may switch to 1/4" to see if that makes a difference. Right now I am basically trying some experimenting. These are taking longer than I envisioned so I may have to jack the final price up. I was hoping to make these as one of those extra gifts people look to buy at Christmas. Make it inexpensive and they can use as a stocking stuffer. Never really made too many puzzles so this is a new area for me. Made a few large puzzles for nephews many years ago but not as many pieces. Will see how it goes.

How do you know they did not use it or one like it?? I am not going to argue with you. If you or anyone else wants to buy whatever tool you want have at it. I feel you are pointing this at me. I have a network of woodworkers that I hang with and most have complete shops of woodworking tools so many times when I comment on things here I think I do bring some first hand knowledge. I will refrain from now on down grading HF and any other tool mentioned here. Good luck and happy woodworking. I just went back and reread the entire thread and nowhere did anyone say do not buy that sander. The sandpaper thing was a takeoff from the thread as things usually do. Weather HF sandpaper is as good as some that is out there can not be disputed but buy cheap, get cheap. Will it get the job done, probably for what we do in the scrolling world. Heck many times a paper bag can do that. ( by the way a paper bag has about 2000 to 2500 grit equivelence in case some one wants to know)

Well I started making some of the puzzles I talked about and tried FD superior puzzle blade. Now I am cutting 3/8" BB plywood and sure do not get much life with these blades. They do cut smooth and make following the tabs and other cuts easy but breakage is a problem. Need to find some consistency as to how far I can push them and just change before breaking. Going to be ordering a ton more of these blades I can see.

Two ways to look at that sir. Others may be trying to give their opinion as to why not to buy that tool also.

Same old debate just as what is the better saw or what is the best blades. Buy and use what you can afford.

I agree about wearing dust masks. No fan or vac can catch all dust. Dust settles on the floor and as you walk you stir it up and in the air. There are many ways to limit dust and every layer of prevention is a good one but final layer is a good fitting dust mask. They make so many designs today that I am sure there is one just right for all of us. Happy woodworking.

That video that Brian posted sure does go into the whole aspect of sanding with sandpapers and the many varieties and uses. Good information. I mentioned that the topic of sandpaper is one that is not cut and dry. Depending how much you want to get involved in true finishing and optimum finishing techniques will depend on how much value you put into the sandpapers you buy. So again for those that think HF sells great sandpaper than you are the target that store is aiming at. Enjoy. Love the Festool line of tools. My dream of replacing all my tools with their line. We all have dreams like this I bet. The thought about people being adverse to buying cheap tools probably comes from experience and I can speak to that. When I first started I bought many craftsman line of tools and yes they got the job done and over the years they became the HF of tools because they became totally China made and cheap turned into expensive because you had to buy more than one. If you use tools just for the occassional use you can get by with the HF's of the world but if your use is more intense than you want comfort, ease of use, efficient tools that do not need to be replaced every year. So when people show adverse lines toward tools such as HF they probably speak from past experience so do not put them down. Everyones tool usage is not the same. If you had success with the tool you purchased and are happy then you are good to go.

Klingspor gold, Mirka Bulldog gold, and there are others that I use that are very good. I buy in bulk because I use alot of sandpaper in many forms including rolls for my drum sander. I will say again sandpaper is not all the same and if you were able to compare side by side you would see it right away. But to each their own. Happy sanding.

Man that is a whole subject initself SANDPAPER So many types of sandpaper and not all sandpaper is the same. HF 3M is what the big box stores carry and it is at least better than HF. Look at Norton papers, or Duragold.

I use it quite often. Used it when I made this Piano box for the hinge.

I have several different styles as I mentioned and just used a gallon type one for some outdoor white trim after I had to replace a window sill from rot. The paint had to be 7 years old at least. No problem mixed up added some flowtrol and good to go. Probably a half gallon. I needed to get that done because I have replacement windows coming in about a week or two. Own a house and your nightmares begin.

Just an observation over the years, people prefer clocks with hour marks at least 4. Easy to incorporate in those patterns that do not have them. Just a thought. As far as color either looks good and black would too. But 2 different wood grains fighting each other to me is a distraction.

Whenever I need to stir large volumes of product weather it be spackle if doing drywall or gallons of paint and even quarts of finish. Highly suggest if you are going to do this and add these to your line stop screwing around with old stock and get rid of that stuff and buy fresh. No excuse because you live in the Boonies. Tired of people using that as an excuse. Today the world is so much smaller. Use the internet and buy on line just like your customers are doing with your product. Just a few clicks away. You get what you pay for all the time. I do not even look many times if I can get in store, just as easy to buy on line. That is why malls are a thing of the past.
