  1. In the pen turning world we call these celtic knots too. I made these pens first is black acrylic with aluminum inlay knot. Next is yellowheart with redheart inlay and white and black stripes and next is just the reverse.
  2. As you see everyone has developed their method. When I started I use to spray pattern and attached right to wood but that is so messy and gets in the grain of the wood especially because I like to use red oak for my projects and then there is walnut that it gets into and was too messy and too time consuming to clean. Wide blue tape is my go to method from then on and has had no problems. I do not use clear tape on top seems like a waste of time. The help from tape in cutting comes from the blue tape. But again no right or wrong way just your way. Happy scrolling.
  3. I use strickly 3m painters tapes. I mainly use the blue under all my pattern projects and as far as picking small pieces off it beats breaking fragile fret work from rubbing with thinners to get glue residue off. For delicate work I use the purple tape and it is less sticky. If using Frog tape their green is equivalent to blue and their yellow is purple. Here is a link to some 3m info that maybe helpful.https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1321181O/scotchblue-diy-surface-guide.pdf I recently encounterd some problems with my puzzles so I am trying an even lower tack tape made for the music world and guitars have not tried it yet. But it feels really low tack.
  4. First thing I thought of too. That exhaust.
  5. To me people buy lumber if they can get a good deal and the right project will come along. people buy coins to put in a case and look at. WHY????????????????? The same difference You want to say the coins are investment so is beautiful pieces of wood. I collect watch dials. Have more watch dials than I can ever make enough pens from in 100 life times and yet I continue to go to ebay and buy more. Why, you will probably have the answer.
  6. I bet we can ask you the same question about something you are saving or collecting so do not throw stones please.
  7. It was the socks that caused the heat when the CA reacted to it. This is why in the pen world we use it for a finish on pens and I love it. But when applying with certain towels they will get extremely warm and even start smoking so you need to take care of discarding. Acetone or nail polish remover will dissolve it. keep it covered with a clean white cloth and use burn sav on it while it heals. Good luck. Another lesson is learned and passed on.
  8. I rarely buy wood on line except BB now that my supply has burned down. I do not use much of it so no big deal. Now I will buy a piece of real exotic to make a pen or something small because some of those true grade AAA exotics are expensive. But I get to hand pick my selections which I know what I am getting. I love woods in the Rosewood family. and any burls that are available but those are the ones that get pricey.
  9. Some maybe KNOT so much.
  10. I have tons of woods of all kind exotics and domestics. I use to go to woodworking shows and they use to have show prices so I stock up I have a hardwood dealer near me that I usually go every summer and stock up and in fact need to make a trip. If I need special wood I never buy just for that project. Waste of money if you buy like that. I buy plenty of board feet. Wood does not go bad and have a shelf life. I do have it scattered in various places in my basement but always there. I collect wood like others collect scrollsaws.
  11. The puzzles I am making have a photo on both sides so it would be like getting 2 puzzles in one and also makes it a little harder to do if they just dump the pieces on the table to figure which side is which. I agree with the time consuming part because for me I have to take the tape off each small piece and it was lifting the photo but it was separating the photo layers not lifting off the board. I will work something out. Had to put on hold I have had a few orders come in that i need to take care of. Will get back to it for sure. Thanks.
  12. Have many of her patterns too. Just do not need any more patterns for now. Wish her well.
  13. That is the basic start of what I am doing. What comes into play next is the pattern I want to use which is a Steve Good pattern. Getting that on there requires some thinking.
  14. Great out of the box thinking. Like it alot.
  15. I am familiar with horseshoes and use to be pretty good at it. So I get the concept now. Thanks. I still like Lawn Darts. Too bad they do not sell any more. Dumb people.
  16. OK this posting has the photos. We just had a discussion about copyrights and hope you pay attention if selling these. Looks good even though I have no idea what it is.
  17. you forgot something
  18. I have sealed the BB with shellac on both sides. I attached my photo that I want cut both front and back of BB (3/8" may change this to 1/4") with 3M 77 adhesive. I then sealed the photo with satin lacquer both sides and looks good. I then placed purple (low tack) tape over the front and back to protect the photo from scratching. I then sprayed adhesive to back of pattern sheet and placed on top of photo. I thought the tape would both protect the back and control the fuzzies on the back. Not enough as it turns out and I can not sand because of the print on the back. When I went to pull the pattern off and the tape in the back it pulled the photo paper apart with it in some spots. Not good. What Steve says he does is first he is not doing a 2 sided print so that is no big deal. But he attaches print to good BB and the attaches the pattern to a seperate 1/8" piece of BB and then sandwiches them together and wraps clear packing tape and cuts each piece out. I tried to cut rows out and then go back and cut the pieces from each row. To me made it easier this way. I did not think that packing tape would hold the entire puzzle together long enough to get them all cut out because as you cut the sides away there is nothing holding together top and bottom. Thus my method. Now what I am going to try next is use some very low tack tape used in the musical industry when repairing guitars. Also bought some poster board to use on the back to take up for the fuzzies. Will have to see how this goes. If not then I may have to try his method. Just taping the ends will not work because as I said you cut the center pieces there is nothing holding the sandwich together. His method may work and thus that is why I am asking if anyone has used it and to give me a report. Progress noted.
  19. Boy I am going to have to try some new things if I want this to work. I may have to try Steve Goods method of wrapping the entire project with clear packing tape. I did not think this would hold all the pieces together as you cut them. I just ordered some super low tack tape and hope this might help because the low tack tape (purple ) I am using is lifting the paper apart. Has anyone done any of Steve Goods puzzles and used his method?? If so how did it go and any do's and don'ts ??
  20. https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/34025-famous-people-copy-rights/ I have to say the last few days I must be reading a whole different set of threads being posted. No where did I see any mocking of this post or calling out of anyone. Just a couple questions that got answered very nicely. Not sure how many people here sell on Etsy, Ebay or even their own web sites but i bet it is not many. Copyright laws are no joke and have been a thorn to all who have done any type crafts over the years. Just like these selling sites that want in on the tax money they were losing so do the copyright enforcers. They see an avenue that can generate money or loss of it because of the internet sales that have surpassed the brick and mortar avenues. So the uptick of enforcement. Iggy got to see this in person at a med sized show and I have too many years ago. But everyone knew that Disney, Harley, Sports both college and pro protect their names and brands. This has not changed for 35 years that I have been doing this. Famous people may have hired some company to go after their share. With cell phones and cameras all around us everywhere we go every day of the week. We need to be extra careful when it comes to selling anything. Who knows what is going to happen with all these Garage sale sites showing up on FaceBook. That can be the next attack. So you have been warned there too. But knock off of brands has been a battle that just keeps growing and growing. Don't get caught in the middle and you should be fine. I can not answer to those that sell on those sites and to what words are taboo or not but Kevin has given out this heads up and we thank him. Iggy we thank you too for bringing this up and actually giving a first hand posting.
  21. Tell them to go to the street corners in NY. Those guys are always on the run and well organized with spotters. I have told this before, This is nothing new. I have seen this 35 years ago at a decent craft show with Disney, Harley and sports of all kind. The word got around the show very fast that they were there. Kapernick must have sent them. They confiscate the stuff and then hand it out to their friends.
  22. Boy is this the truth!!! Just go to FaceBook
  23. I am up there too so my tool buying days are few and when I still buy what I want within limits. Let others sort things out when I am gone and who cares then. I worked hard to get what I have so let them work too. Why do we have to hand down the crown jewels. How are they going to learn values. But I will be darned if I deprive myself so they do not get the good stuff. They get the left overs anyway you slice it. I have pen stuff from my other hobby that can fetch big$$ and gave my brother a heads up and what he does with it is his call.
  24. Same reason I am trying 3/8" I am having a hit or miss thing too. Trying to zero in on the sweet spot. They look like they will do what I want. Have to strip the tape off and see if there is fuzzies left on the back. That can be a problem because what I am doing is making a puzzle that is 2 sided. In other words you can get 2 for one with one cutting just by flipping over and may even confuse players more.
