She had done many special request for me in past years and was awesome helpful.. That said I had a special request a few years ago and she finally did reply but it was several weeks and said she was too busy to do the request. Last fall / winter I had another request to modify one of her designs and send a request in.. after week and a half or two weeks I thought she wasn't going to even answer me but turns out she did send me the revised design free of charge because it took her a few days to get back to me.. the reply was in my spam mail folder for some reason so I didn't know she sent me the message until several weeks later.. Unfortunately I found a different pattern from Steve Good that I was able to modify and use so I never did use the design she did for me..

Maybe send Rolf a message, he has done test cutting for the magazines over the years so he may know something..

Can't help with the pattern but I do sell clock inserts.. I have many sizes on hand but only have a listing of the 2" one up currently because I'm running low on inventory. I'm getting out of the clock making / selling so I don't mind selling off a few more. Many sizes from 1-7/16 up to 3" so let me know if there is a certain size you need I may or may not have something, LOL

Welcome to the Village! If it were me I'd probably see if they would exchange it for a different one.. I don't think there should be any thumping noise..

Interesting Homemade Dust Collection.
kmmcrafts replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Yeah too much time, . I'm currently caught up on YouTube videos.. I've watched every single uploaded youtube video they have and am patiently waiting for someone to upload another, .. My favorite channel ( sleeperdude ) usually uploads on Saturday around 1pm so I guess I'll have to settle for FB Marketplace ads for the next couple hours. On a more serious note, I built a exhaust system for my new laser and finally powered it up.. out of the box it run pretty good but mirror alignment was slightly off and I've effectively made it much worse,. I have a engraving job coming up that needs to be completed by August and at the rate I'm going with this mirror alignment thing it might be 2026 before I have it running correctly, I engraved / cut some ornaments on it the other day and even not tuned right I successfully cut 4 of them in 6 minutes and my small laser took 16 minutes to do the same ones.. I think once dialed in this thing will be awesome for where I'm going with future business. I also will say that there is a lot of YouTube time in the shop now as the machine makes my products and I either watch it do design work in the background, work on website or take a nap... I always wondered how so many etsy folks had so much time for promoting their laser / cnc products and now I know.. -
Just seen this on YouTube and thought maybe some of you might like to see this for some ideas.

Guess I'm going to stop eating glue then... We all had that one kid in school that would lick the glue off his fingers..

I feel like the corrugated cardboard will create a problem with coming loose around the edges and then cause it to get hung up on the edge of either the table ( large enough piece ) or around the hole where the blade is and essentially mess up your cut.. Then you'll scrap the wood and the cardboard. I hope this doesn't happen and only stating it so you'll possibly be thinking of that and use caution while cutting. I think your saws are the older models without all those dust port holes so you may have less of a problem with this happening than those of us with the dust port holes in our Excaliburs, Pegas etc..

They won't ship that stuff to Michigan now... and my local supplier for the Watco spray cans has changed up to something different as well and went from $8.49 a can to $15.** for whatever they replaced it with.. I ordered several cases of the Watco spray cans from Max Warehouse late last fall.. The local shop was still selling quarts / gallons but I assume that'll be gone as well once sold out. I like the water base poly other than the water tends to lift the grain of the wood so I have to sand after the first coat.. and that's tough to do when I have double layered ornaments unless I spray before I glue them together but i prefer to glue wood to wood rather than wood to a painted surface.. Shellac doesn't work either because I use alcohol based craft paints to paint details on the ornaments and certain finishes make the paint bleed. So far lacquer and the water base poly is the only things that have worked for these painted ornaments.
-
I like the Lacquer because of the fast dry time.. I also like the water base poly because of the quick dry time... that said, I don't honestly know the actual "cure" times.. My experience using same brand (Watco) the quart can mix is different than what is in the spray cans. Quart can dries too fast for me.. I tried reducing it with adding more lacquer thinner and that didn't help much at all. I may experiment more with reducing it with slower drying higher quality of lacquer but those type reducers = more $$ so then I have more investment.. Then is it really worth it.. as far as cost goes there is more to it than just the price.. there is clean-up of spray equipment.. my spray area would need to be plumbed for air line from compressor or a new small compressor for just this purpose.. there comes a point and time where the convenience outweighs the cost. Many times I'm only spraying 1 ornament that was custom ordered etc.. not really worth using a spray gun for that just to save a few pennies worth of finish. At the end of the day the cost goes into the finished piece anyway.. Now if I could save enough percentage to a point where I could significantly lower my final cost to the customer I'd be all over it.. Also if I could get set up to a point where I could do a large production run of spraying 100 or more ornaments at once.. the spray gun method probably would be more worth it.. at some point I might get to that position..

Max warehouse has been cheaper for my finishes for the last few times I've had to restock. I don't use much Watco Danish oil anymore but used to use about 4 gallon a year and that used to be cheaper at Home Depot with free shipping than Amazon.. Still expensive to use finishes.. especially aerosol cans.. I mostly use Lacquer these days.. and had been looking into buying gallons instead of spray cans.. still not sure the cleanup etc is worth it in buying the gallons and using a spray gun or not.. sometimes convenience is worth the cost.

Thanks for sharing the experience and the advice

A 214 would use the round lower blade holder shown in the third one down from the top of the page. I showed the whole page because I didn't know if you need the lower one or upper one.. I assume if you need the upper one it would be the "Old Style" one towards the bottom of the page but I would contact them by phone ( email is sometimes ignored by them ) with the model and serial number and they will get you what you need. https://stores.bushtonhawkstore.com/blade-holders/

Took advantage of another 25%off coupon...

Maybe I need to make another account with them under another phone number and email.. Then I can go back and forth between the accounts to get the good coupons.. LOL -
Took advantage of another 25%off coupon...
kmmcrafts replied to GreggA's topic in General Scroll Sawing
If you don't mind doing a little digging around online many times you can search for coupons.. I have gotten many this way.. I order quite a lot of car parts from Rockauto and they usually send out a coupon after an order.. there is a lot of folks that share that coupon on the FB car groups etc.. Always find one on there if the one they sent me had expired before i got to use it.. They can be used more than once on RA.. good until expire.. HF used to send me a monthly 25% or 30% but now they've put price limits on them most times.. -
I think we've got two different conversations going here.. One is actual backers for finished products to complement the cutting The other is a backer that you put on the back as a sacrificial piece to help from tearout etc.. when cutting thin fretwork stock that you only need one finished piece and rather than using another piece of wood that you could use for other projects why not cut something that you would be throwing out anyway such as cardboard... I think this is what Ray is asking about? I personally have always stack cut anyway as usually I'm in production mode and usually find a buyer for 1,2,3 or 4 more anyway.. As for backers to complete the project with a contrasting piece to enhance the details of the cutting I've used all sorts of things from colored paper, foam sheets, poster board, plywood of another species of wood, hardboard, mirror, and gosh dang near anything that I can fasten to the back and looks good..

Never thought about them, and not sure why I never thought that they'd have a website, LOL.. I've been to one of the stores in the big city by my daughters house over near Detroit, big place.. Currently have two tractors in the shop and there is just not enough floor space to be trying to build a bench inside and I'm not too interested in building it out in the cold and snow.. Was in my other shop today and I have almost everything I would need to build one other than probably need a few more 2x4's. Have a couple full sheet and also some 3/4 of sheets of 3/4 plywood. When things warm up I'll be cleaning up the shop and getting the scroll saws ready to sell along with many other things.

I've already been asking on the laser groups and forum pages.. Most of the laser folks are not woodworkers and many don't even work with wood on the lasers.. there is so many different products to work with on lasers engraving services.. Leather, Acrylics, Slate, Ceramic, Tumbler Bottles, Glassware.. and many other products.. In Fact.. if there is someone that's looking for a business start-up.. many folks on the laser sites would love to have a short workbench to set their lasers on.. as I said most do not do woodwork or build things.. many are stay-at-home moms that got a laser to do a side Hustle etc. and do not have a means of making a bench.. Not much out there ready to buy that is short enough yet also having a large enough top on it to support the size of the lasers.. I think if someone made and marketed them to the laser people you'd sell a good deal of them.. most commented questions on those for people getting a new machine is.. it's sooo low to the floor and many asking the same questions "where to get a bench".. not much out there in the sizes' needed.. and I'm quite surprised that the folks selling these lasers don't have some sort of legs / feet to mount on them.. they really could have some metal adjustable legs.. They have holes on the bottom where one could bolt a set of legs on.. This might be how I do it with some square metal tubing.. I guess it really doesn't need a "table" just some legs to raise it up higher.
-
I'm likely going to set up the laser right on the floor as it sets and get a feel for where and how I want this set up at.. and maybe how to use it, LOL. I'm currently building a block-off board to set into my shop window with the 6" hole in it to install a temporary exhaust.. At first I wanted to just get it all set up permanent before going at it with business but business changed my mind quickly when I out of the blue was asked if I could engrave a floral design with a company logo ( their artwork ) onto 200pcs. 8 x 16" charcuterie boards that they also are going to supply.. It's a local company that I've done work for in the past and they follow me online and seen I now have a bigger laser.. and want me to do the job this year for them. Thankfully they don't need them until August so hopefully I'll figure out how to use this laser by then, LOL.. But it has prompted me to get this set up and experiment and this will also give me time to clean out and sell some of the scroll saws and other equipment that I'll no longer really need. Once clearing things out I'll have a better idea of where to make the parking spot for the lasers.. Basically my whole shop and business is taking a complete new turn on life and I've been struggling to know what I want to put where and what needs to be sold off etc.. so I've been sitting in a funk.. this laser work order will get me out of that funk and just "do it".. then by doing that maybe I'll figure out where the next steps are.. So right where it's shown in the photos is where I'm going to run the first few batches of products.. Then maybe once the warmer weather comes I can clean out the shop of unused tools make more room and possibly find my shop layout before next winter..
-
I read that as being a backer like many paint or use as a contrasting color wood to enhance the piece.. As for a sacrificial piece that'll be cut as a sort of support for the actual wood panel it might work well but I think it'd depend on the type of cardboard you use.. I don't think you'd want to use the corrugated? like a shipping box as I feel like the bottom would fray and be catching and ripping on the edges of the saw table.. Now the type that say a cereal box or case of your beverages come in type of cardboard might work well for this.. I use the old cereal boxes to do test runs on the laser or to make a outline mark for say ornaments that are already made but I need to line it up to engrave a name or? on them so I know where to place the ornament to get it straight etc.

The model number indicates it to be a single speed.. unless someone has upgraded it at some point. Normally the ones that had the belt drive pulley system had a model number such as 220-3 or 226-3 etc.. and yes as others said very old and many of the old ones had motor issues but mostly on the variable speed models.. I'd not do more than $100 - 150 for one like this and it'd have to be a super shape for that much money.. Keep looking.. The RBI Hawks are awesome saws built like a tank..

I seen another video where the guy melted it with automotive type urethane paint reducer.. potent stuff and in that video he also wasn't wearing any protective gear so clearly not the smartest, LOL.. and likely lost what few brain cells he had left.... Gotta watch what gets passed around on these videos as always.. none or most posting this type of thing is not professionals.. so you always have to take that with consideration..

Yeah, I need to know more info on this too.. I've been looking a little more and not finding much on it. I did find this about using as a glue though and seems to be more about that than as a finish..
-
Ran across this on YouTube and thought maybe someone here my like to see this as well.. Making finish out of styrofoam..

I have Amish cabinet maker shop about a half mile from here.. They actually want me to do their CNC custom cabinet door designs etc for them.. I never even gave that much thought but I'm sure they'd build something too..
