  1. The glues etc in plywood tend to eat up the blades faster.. if that is what you're using. Even so, scroll saw blades don't last very long anyway so just keep that in mind. I change blades about every 20 - 30 minutes of cutting just to give a general idea.. It's not like a tablesaw blade where you can cut for quite a long time on one blades.
  2. Awesome!! Those Hawk Ultras are good saws.. not much issues with those.. the earlier saws yes there were some issues with those saws for sure.. even though those issues are what I would say kind of rare anyway considering the thousands of them out there.. I think Hawk really made a lot of improvements in quality and reliability starting with the Ultra..
  3. Hello, welcome to the village! I guess I don't have a lot to add from what has already been said. Do feel free to ask any questions, if you are like most here you'll probably quickly find that the search function works just about as good as a flat tire on a car.. it's there and spins around somewhat but not great. I've been on this site for years and still have trouble getting relevant info on whatever I searched for so sometimes it's hit or miss using the search.
  4. That's why I no longer subscribe.. BUT back in the day when I first started scrolling they was interesting to me to see the projects and they did give me many ideas and inspiration.. Actually I'd probably still be subscribed but there was a few years that I was the sole income as the wife was having some health problems.. money was tight and I didn't think renewing it was a great idea.. when things got better a couple years later I pondered it but evaluated that I rarely used any patterns out of them and just didn't see it the same as I did back when I first subscribed. I would check them out in the magazine stands and now and then there was one I would buy which was like 4 of them in a 10 year span, LOL. which also confirms my thought that it's not worth the money to me.. I know it's great for many folks and hope it doesn't dwindle and close up. Back in the day my favorite one was the Creative Woodworks and Crafts one instead of the one that is still going today. It was a monthly one instead of quarterly too.. and about the same price. Unfortunately they closed up.
  5. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/149710355X/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 I've had this in my shopping cart for several months now,
  6. I'm on a lot of those FB groups.. but I rarely ever even look at the topics and mostly because of things already mentioned.. also it is hard to follow along.. Then there is several groups and several people posting the same thing on all of those groups so if I do follow the groups I end up seeing several of the same postings several times in the same day which makes it even harder to follow along...
  7. You are welcome, I would always help out our regulars on here even if they don't always follow up. This site has a lot of members that just are lurkers and never post in the public forums.. many of them PM me for various questions and help.. those are the main culprits that ask a question and never follow up with me. Had one person that sent me all kinds of photos of their Excalibur and "we" rebuilt her saw simply by her showing me a picture and I would take the photo and circle and write what to take apart and what to watch for etc.. and send it back to her, I walked her through the whole process based off of photos and short videos that she sent.. She did thank me etc. and we got it running good. Took a good few weeks as she take one thing apart and send me a photo asking what next..LOL but it was really cool to walk her through the process.. I really do enjoy helping when I can.. Just that some folks don't show any appreciation whatsoever. When / IF they come back if I remember them I'm likely not going to be as helpful, LOL
  8. Very nice work.. love the contrast of the two types of wood.
  9. This topic is brought up many times over the years and the most common issue with the magazine has always been the patterns on both sides of very large insert papers.. On one hand it's a shame to see it dwindling down a slow spiral of probably becoming extinct in the coming years.. On the other hand it's how management decides to manage and run it... There are many magazines that have went to online subscriptions.. As for stopping the theft of the patterns themselves that are in the magazines.. what's to stop people from scanning the images in and posting them on pinterest and other sites or scrollers sharing it amongst each other anyway? Yes the electronic form would make it slightly easier but is that stopping people from doing it? I'd say not really from my own observations. I see this all the time on the FB groups.. a well managed site like we have here on the village that kind of activity is kept minimal. I see a grim future with all magazines just because of the internet.. They can choose to run themselves out of business or step up their game and give people what they want. T I don't subscribe and haven't for years. I have a large stack of them from over the years and they've almost went to the trash a few times now.. I don't use hardly any of the patterns from them and the ones I do use I went to the designers site and paid for it again for the digital copy. I used to just like to read the stories in it when I first started sawing.. and getting ideas of projects etc from the others.. But one can come here or to the many FB groups and also get that in real time.. and interact with the people posting the photos of their projects etc. At the end of the day if you want to see it continue you probably should subscribe and support them.. Seems like a lot of people like the magazine and don't want to see it go.. but many of those same people won't subscribe because of the pattern insert issues.. I never did buy it solely for the patterns.. They're just a bonus IF you can get a good scan of them.
  10. Unless it's in super shape and a really good deal I wouldn't buy it. Many parts for these are obsolete so keep that in mind.
  11. May be just in my area but, I see young kids repairing things most adults can't. Whenever my phone or computer breaks or I think it's not working right.. those kids can have it working in no time.. My kids seem to take everyone's phones with dead batteries or cracked screens and repair them. Though I did teach them how to work on cars etc. too and oldest one works for the state as a heavy equipment mechanic..
  12. I don't know what the story is either.. I just know that people "trying" to help should be cherished rather than criticized for trying.. I mean.. they don't have to help.. it's not a requirement.. But then when nobody helps the site as a whole gets criticized because nobody is helping.. No win situation, kind of like with a woman ask if her outfit makes her look fat.. You just can't win ..
  13. Sorry you feel that way but in all honesty the clearer the question the better help you get. On the flipside it's also very frustrating to offer help to people when they don't communicate well either so that is a two way street. I get PM's almost daily with generic vage questions about saw noises or repairs of some sort.. It's really hard to diagnose a squeak when the person asking for help can't tell you if its even coming from the saw.. let alone what part of the saw might be squeaking, then they tell you they've done everything but don't say what they have done either.. if they've done everything then it should be fixed.. LOL BUT.. I'm here to offer help as best as I can.. should that person go posting a message saying my help is not helping and go on a tantrum I'm likely not going to ever offer that person help again so be careful how you treat those trying to help.. I also like to hear feedback on the advice or issue too as that helps me learn as well.. If I give advice to repair a saw and I never hear back from said person again.. not chiming back to say well that fixed it or something else fixed it.. I'm likely not going to help again.. At the end of the day, I'm just thankful to have a place like this for those that do offer help when I need it and I'm also thankful to be able to offer help when I can. Before the internet where did we go or how did we get help like this.. for me it was a lot of trial and error.. mostly error but you only lose when you give up.
  14. Didn't know there was such a service.. Maybe I'll have a few books done.. I rarely use patterns from magazines or the books solely because of the pain in the behind it is to have to scan and then half the time they don't come out very well unless you rip out the pages so it's sets nice and flat on the surface of the scanner.. Then I'm ruining the book, LOL
  15. I did this with one of my pattern books.. and it was just a small book, not one of those 1" thick ones.. It's almost as tedious as creating the pattern myself, LOL and was very time consuming so I didn't do any of the other several books I have. At the time I had a large format printer and scanner, I probably should have kept it just for the scanning portion as I never thought about that.. I still have about a full pack of 11 x 17 printer paper.. I didn't use the large format part of the printer enough to justify the extra cost for another one.. especially in the laser printer section.. they are not cheap. Of course neither was the stupid ink and the issues I had with it.. Never will buy a inkjet printer again, LOL
  16. Have not done it on a large format scanner but I did fold up the paper and just scan all the patterns in to a file on my computer.. Though I rarely use any of those patterns anymore. Anytime I do use a pattern from a book I always save it on the computer in case I need it again.
  17. That's amazing to me that they was able to fix this.. You sure they didn't just replace with another saw? I say this because I've seen literally hundreds of post over the years about the service centers not being able to figure out the problem.. and many times they end up just replacing the saw.
  18. Are you talking about this part? https://seyco.com/product/ex21-a58a-complete-rear-tensioner-assembly/
  19. Been there done that with comparing to the DeWalt sleeves.. Not the same.. I had all the parts on hand to rebuild my DeWalt for the 3rd time.. I kept them when I sold the DeWalt thinking they'd be the same.. they are not.. at least not any of the ones inside the saw.. If I remember correctly "some" of the ones were the same in the front rocker arms.. IF I ever take my saw apart again I might look into the bearings & sleeves for the Jet saw.. they seems to sell individual parts for those on ereplacement parts website.. those saws are made in the same place as the King and Pegas etc.. so with some luck they may use the same bearings and sleeves. So far for all the other models of similar saws you have to just buy the whole link arm assembly..
  20. She sent me a message explaining all things that has been tried.. Claims to have replaced the upper blade chuck per suggestion from Seyco... and no change.. through all the things she has done there is still the lower blade chuck that hasn't been changed.. if I'm understanding the message correctly. That all said she also mentioned that her Excalibur also started doing this around the same time.. unless I misunderstood that.. Now I suppose the chucks could have spread apart on both saws like this at the same time.. but it also is making me wonder what blades she's using.. I've seen bad batches of blades slip through QT and end up in the consumers hands.. Hard to believe they'd stretch within 2 seconds of turning the saw on and having a very loose flimsy blade without even getting a chance to cut..
  21. Thanks for posting that Ray.. It does give some better views to what to do and expect when taking these apart. When I did my saw a few years ago I wanted to do video of it but no camera man or stand so I just did some photos and a small write up.
  22. This is the parts I'm talking about in case someone doesn't quite understand. https://seyco.com/product/ex21-a58a-complete-rear-tensioner-assembly/ If you take it apart and put blue loc-tite on the threads it'll last a good while.. IF you let it be it'll likely wear out faster and would then "have to" be replaced. Either case it's kind of tricky to get apart.. there is a lock-nut on the bottom side of that block that is quite hard to access and hold while trying to unthread it to get it out of the saw... Maybe I should have taken more time to take more of the saw apart.. I ended up just removing the plastic above the upper arm off and using some long needle nose pliers to hold the lock-nut.. harder to do yet was reaching back in there to hold the nut and get it to thread back on, LOL.. IF you can do the rubber-band thing.. that might be the best option.. or plan to take the whole back part of the saw apart which might have been easier for me to do..
  23. I took it all apart and put blue loc-tite thread lock on the threads and put it back together.. haven't had an issue since and that's been some years ago.. That said, many topics on this issue and most have found a way to wrap a rubberband around it in some way to keep it from turning. Not sure if your saw has a mark on the knob or not, some saws do and some don't, but you could mark it with some tape and mark on the saw with some tape and just keep an eye on it and when it moves just move it back. Over time though this gets worst and will eventually need addressed. Seyco suggest buying a new rod and that threaded block that it screws into.. but again, I used blue loc-tite as I had it on hand and no issues for a long time. It was really bad on mine too.. like every single cut I'd have to re-adjust that knob.
  24. Another recent cut from Steve Good's collection.. After a few people seen it now i get to make a couple more of them...
  25. I have had that dust collector for around 8 years now and It has been a good one.. Many good reviews of it too... I don't have a whole shop full of HF tools but I've got a fair amount and I've not had any issues with any of them.. Years ago yes.. some of the stuff was junk.. but in more recent times I've had really good luck with a lot of stuff from them.
