  1. Looks Good Dick, where did you find the plan?
  2. Clear packing tape will help the dust issue in a couple ways. It does seems to keep the dust down a bit, but to me more important, it is a slick surface so if your puffer isn't real strong, it still has a better chance to get the dust out of the way on the slicker surface.
  3. Well, the quandry has been avoided for now. I had sent him a long email explaining what it would take to cut out and make the truck, and that since his son was only 3 there wasn't really anything in the process he could participate in. The fellow thanked me for explaining it to him, and has decided to wait a few years until his son is old enough to take part.
  4. Good work on the bowls. I have made several of these in 3 or 4 different sizes. Sometimes they sell quickly, other times not so much. I use the gel super glue and it works great.
  5. Crap! Being raised in the 50's-60's the thought of being sued if the guys a klutz and injures himself never crossed my mind! I did explain to him why I thought making the the dump truck wasn't ideal for a first project, and how long it would take so maybe that has dissuaded him as I haven't heard back.
  6. My original response was to say I would only charge him for materials, but he is being a bit insistent He would come to my shop and be using my equipment, which means I'm going to need to get after the organizing and detailed cleaning in the shop I've sorta been putting off due to the heat we've had lately. (No AC in the shop!) I'll be honest, the extra money would be very welcome, but I don't want to be greedy.
  7. Okay, now that I have your attention. I have a bit of a quandary. While selling our wares at a craft show I was approached by a young man and his 3 yr old son. They purchased a small item, and while we were talking he asked if I would be willing to show him how to make one of the toys we had on display, and he would be willing to pay for my time. The toy he picked, an old school sturdy little dump truck with moving dump body and tailgate, is not real complicated, but with cutting parts, shaping, gluing and such is a 2-3 day project allowing gluing time and finishing time, with a couple hours each session. Now my quandary. I have absolutely no idea what would be a fair and reasonable amount to ask for. I'll need to get back to him in a couple days, so appreciate the input.
  8. Great Job! And gorgeous wood! Is that from a toymakingplans.com pattern? I get periodic emails from them and it resembles a plan they offered a while back.
  9. Yup, I have an anniversary edition EX21 and my son has the DW788. Thanks for the kind comments guys. I'm thinking of having a magnetic sign with contact info made up for the truck. Also contemplating the sign made into a brand. But might need to simplify it a bit.
  10. I figured that since my Son and I make wooden toys and gifts, we should have a Wooden sign. I'd been thinking I needed to make one for some time but just never came across the correct round tuit! Then yesterday I saw a design in Steve Goods pattern library that seemed to fit the bill, but it only had one scroller in it. A little fiddling with the copy machine, stretching here, shrinking there, printing part mirrored, and Tah-Dah!! We have a new sign.
  11. Morning Marg, not counting the axle pins, the dragon consists of 27 parts. Thanks everybody for the wonderfully kind remarks. All I can say is Thank You! And wait till you see the next one!!
  12. Keefie, I tried the breathing fire option, but the darn thing kept setting ITSELF on fire. That seemed to be somewhat career limiting, so it was scrapped. For Now!
  13. My son Erik and I sat down with a basic concept and started the design process to create Dragon 2.0! About the only thing that didn't change was...... A pushrod! Yup, every other part on this sucker was changed in shape or function. Oh, and it has 4 legs that walk instead of just two. It's still a work in progress. As we looked at this one finished today, we started sketching on the templates how we would like to refine the shape of the head, neck and crest. Thanks for looking folks. You can check out an 8 second video of it here
  14. Steve Good has several variations of this type of bowl/basket on his website here They've been a reasonably good seller at craft fairs, and I've even gotten a couple orders for custom finishes. What's also cool is to glue up a board from strips of various types of wood, then when you glue the rings together you can make all sorts of interesting patterns like this one:
  15. Another vote here for the dremel plunge router. I had a custom order a few weeks ago that I couldn't reach with my drill press so started looking. Seyco sells a gadget that only drills holes for around $130!!! Got my dremel plunge router brand new at Lowes for $29 and it works great.
  16. I use Scotch brand packing tape. One layer on the wood, 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive on the back of the pattern, then another layer of packing tape over the top. Tried an off brand of packing tape once and had a similar problem to yours, used mineral spirits to get it off.
  17. Early last year I made this little horse drawn cart from some plans I found some where. The two figures bob up and down as the toy is pulled. If I saved the plans I have no idea where. I think they might have been a pull out section from a magazine, but again I have no idea. Anyone have any ideas??
  18. Great job Kevin!! I've downloaded well over 100 patterns from Steve Goods site. Lots of good stuff there.
  19. Zeller was our 2nd grey. Both were gentle dogs. People think you need acres of room to have a grey, but that's not the case. Their favorite pastime is napping. Among grey owners their dogs are often referred to as "40 mile per hour speed bumps" because while they can hit 40mph at full stride, napping is their real joy!
  20. Now see, I thought that the tiny teeth on a 2/0 would be so much less aggressive that it would be easier to control. NUH-UH!! I had thought about using a sacrificial backer, but didn't have any on hand I wanted to "sacrifice". I normally use a 3R on 1/4 - 1/2 stock and an Olson 5PGR on 5/8 to 3/4" That's why I figured I better ask you folks that's smarter than me! Thanks
  21. Here's the deal. I have an Excalibur 21" Anniversary Edition, and just love it. Usually when I'm cutting a plaque, it's for the home business so I usually cut out 2 or 3 at once and usually out of 5/32 or 1/4 ply. But occasionally I want to cut a single piece out of 1/8 - 5/32 material, and I suddenly grow 3 extra thumbs and have a devil of a time controlling the blade! I tried using a 2/0 blade and slowed the machine down to almost its lowest speed. That helped a little. Have I become lazy cutting thicker stock or is there a trick or technique that I, in my limited experience have yet to learn? Any help, advice, friendly banter muchly appreciated!
  22. Three weeks ago we had to have our adopted greyhound Zeller put to sleep. He was 13 1/2 yrs old and had been with us for 10 years. He was the wife's favorite and his passing hit her hard. Humble thanks to Grampa (Paul) for creating the pattern for me. This is the finished plaque, I will be giviing it to Lin this evening. I plan to have a box of kleenex handy when I pressent it to her. Thanks again guys, you all ROCK!!
  23. I would like to ask the moderators to please remove this thread. I have apparently angered the designer by thinking that a design published in a magazine 14 years ago was public domain. I apologized to the designer but he has threatened to curtail my ability to sell my items on a certain website. I'm sorry I should have investigated it more. There was no malice or intent to deceive, but I did make a mistake. It won't happen again.
  24. Arrgh, did anyone else notice the latest Facebook "we're gonna re-arrange how pages look just because we can"? We logged onto our Facebook business page and it was all re-arranged. The link button for our etsy page, which was right there when the page opened, has been moved partway down the page to folks have to scroll to see it. So far have found no way to put it back near where it was.
