Welcome to The Village. Start with easy patterns and you will be less discouraged. Take you time and remember that if yo use really thin wood it is more difficult to cut. I would suggest starting with 1/2 inch thick wood and you will find it easier to manage. Not sure what you have for blades and wood but every option has it's effect on our work. So, if you are not sure about anything. ask....but most of all, log on often and participate in the comments. Go to the 'coffee shop' if you like to socialize. A lot of fun is found there. Gordon, I think you will find that scrolling is a very rewarding hobby. I also started scrolling after I retired and I have grown to really love it. My only suggestion would be to start with rather simple patterns until you become comfortable with your saw. then venture out into more challenging pieces. After all, no one can be a great artist the first time they pick up a paint brush, no matter how hard they try. Scrolling is a learning experience as well so take it easy on yourself. Remember to always have fun at it and be open to asking for any help on anything that may come up that might puzzle you some. Everyone here loves to help others and see what other are making too. I have more patterns, wood, I am retired and it seems that I sometimes almost live in my shop. I have to say that I have not had a chance to feel like I don't know what to make next. It seems that between people getting married, dying, gradutaions, retirements and anniversaries, I just don't have the time to look for things to make just because I have not gotten around to them Dick heppnerguy

Frank, You did a fabulous job with the staining. It is light enough so that it is really only a hint of color and not at all dominating. I did my first 'requested' item using a spiral blade. I have to say that I am not completely happy with the results but if I do not keep trying to learn it, how am I ever going to get to a point of satisfaction in using them. You are a much more dedicated guy then am I and your work shows it. It is truly a joy to watch you go from start to finish with a project. One of these days soon, I hope to go to Scrappiles shop (Paul) and pick up some clues and advice on using the spiral blade. Keep up your great work, my friend and I will continue to follow your efforts with anticipation. Dick heppnerguy -
Rob, I have several other sanding devices that I use in my primary shop. I have an inflatable sander that i use in my drill press, a flap sander, a inch belt sander with a 5 inch disk sander, and of course the orbital hand sander and several other hand sanders. But in my new additional shop I have placed my table saw, band saw, router table, and my chop saw and planer as well. Come scroll with me if you need the use of more sanders. I remember buying an HP printer/scanner at WalMart for under $20. When the ink ran out I went to buy new cartridges and ended up buying another printer for the ink. I never even took the printer out of the plastic wrap. I did this twice until the price of the printer jumped up to over the cartridge replacement cost. I figured they were selling the printer to get your ink cartridge business which much make them a higher profit then the printer does. I used refilled cartridges where the cost was less and HP send me some notices that the warranty would not be honored because of the replacement ink. Who cares? I would never worry about throwing away my printer if it quit because they are so cheep anyway. After I bought my next ink, which was their brand, they reinstated my warranty. Crazy deal. I sometime refill my own cartridges and they do not want them to work but eventually they do anyway. Dick heppnerguy

They would indeed make some wonderful puzzles. The first and the last have a lot of the same colored areas in them so in you made them into 500 or more pieces, it would take quite a bit of time to put the puzzle together. Not for the person who wants to build a puzzle in a couple of hours or less. Nice photos. I like to build puzzles so they might be right up my alley. Dick heppnerguy

Here is my bench my grandson donated to me. These are actually 4 sink basis but with drawers added. This photo was taken this morning. Since this photo, I have added trim, and a splash board. I also mounted my florescent lights to my ceiling. Tomorrow I hope to wire everything in and paint the last piece of wall board that I put on this evening. Then I will be pretty much ready to return to my scroll shop and complete a couple of projects that I need to get finished. It has been a tiring last few days with 2 trips to Portland and loading and unloading two trailer loads of things. Portland it just over 200 miles one way for me. Monday I did it as a round trip, same day. then worked most of the last two days putting my new shop addition together. Thanks for your interest in my project. Dick heppnerguy

Ralph, I drove into Portland from Heppner at 3 am and loaded up my wood and basis. tjhen went to Tigard and loaded up my trailer and car full to where I could not even get another thing in either one and was heading back to Heppner at 10 am. Long day. No time for anything else...I hope next time too. Dick

I was visiting my grandson over the weekend, He is the one that owns the cabinet shop and he offered to give me 4 basis to use for the workbench in my new shop addition. Being untalented in doing even the simplest of wood structure projects, I was elated by his offer . so we went over to his shop and he made me four basis and a top board that will become my knew work bench. He also gave me a bunch of his scrap wood. It is really nice and I am so thrilled to add it to my wood supply. Dick heppnerguy

When I am cutting on my DW I am sitting at my work bench on a backless adjustable bench with the saw table at about mid chest hight. If I am cutting on my Hawk, it is on it's own stand and I sit on an backed plastic picnic chair. I find both work for me and the changed position also relaxes me better than to be in only one for hours on end Dick heppnerguy

Thank you taking the time to explain in such a complete way and easy to understand way, what is needed to obtain a lighting system as good as these you have a lot more talent then I do I am afraid that had I made these on my own they would not be even close to the great job you did here. I had a really nice, large and lighted magnifying lamp but did not like having something between my own eyes and the piece I was attempting to cut. Your lighting idea looks like it would be just the ticket because I would not have that sort of a problem with the lights that bothered me with the magnifying light. Always nice to get a new tool in the shop. Now you can take on some new things. I would not like it if I did not have my band saw or my planer. Next to my scroll saw these are two of my most used tools I just do not like my table saw a lot. It seems like a dangerous item to me and I only use it when I absolutely have to. Great looking saw. Full of great features. Out shines the one I have but I still enjoy having it in my shop Dick heppnerguy

well here is my crawling baby, my second practice piece and s butterfly trying to use 2 colors of wood. the one on the right was a complete failure and the wing on the left side was my 'almost got it'' There is no filler of attempt to finish anything just practice cuts Dick heppnerguy
