  1. Thanks so much for the nice comments. I really like doing something different now & then. I don't do a lot with the thicker pieces because it is hard to view them unless you are right in front of it. The paint made the difference, I think. Thanks again, so much. Take Care
  2. It is really nice to do these things for our friends & loved ones. You did a fantastic job cutting it & frame too. Looks real nice. Thanks
  3. That is a beautiful piece of Art, Pete. The wood choices & your skill of workmanship is outstanding. It will remain an heirloom for the family for a long time. Thanks for sharing it with us. God Bless
  4. WOW, that is really nice. And we do love scrolling when we go through all the hoops to get it finished. You did a fantastic job finishing it. Patience !!! Yes. I thought my most cuts were a lot, only 750 . We talke pride in what we do, or we wouldn't do it. Love to scroll. Thanks for sharing with us.
  5. Just finished my mountain scene. It is two photo's of the mountain area south of Hoover Dam. I combined two photo's to make up a longer scene on the 8 in. x 22 in. x 1/2 in. thick basswood . I like these pieces with the bark on them. It gives it a more outdoor look. After finishing the cutting, I wood burned the shadow area dividing the mountains from one another. I think it made a more detailed & dimentional look. It took abouit 519 cuts to complete & I did something different for the depth of the wood. I taped the whole piece, cut it all out & then spray painted with flat black all the cuts, so it would show the depth of the shadows, without being so white. Let me know what you think. Thanks
  6. Looks great. I always like doing portraits, especially of family. I like the detail & it will last a life time. Beautuful. Thanks for sharing.
  7. Love those boats, any kind of boat, espesially fishing boats. You did an exceptional job cutting it. Everything looks real nice. Thanks.
  8. That is soooo cooool. He will have that for a long time to come. You did a fine job & nice engineering job too. I'll bet the fire truck will have a ladder that cranks up in the air. Keep the little one happy. Thanks
  9. Way to go, Mike. Looks great. The frame gives me an idea for framing a portrait next time. I think you have the work piece glued to the backer board & is not fastened to the frame the conventional way. Am I right or all wet ?? I like it & will definetly try one. I usually just put a foam sheet for backers on some of my portraits & set the picture into the frame. Thanks for sharing your idea. I like the grass idea. Take Care
  10. With plex that has paper on both sides, I use the blade that I like best. I can cut fairly fast (normal) & have not had the plex fuse together behind the blade. I even cut two 1/4 inch pieces stacked, but, a little slower, naturally. I have had good luck with all of my cuttings of Acrylic, but, it has to have paper or tape on both sides to do as I do. I even use spiral blades on it also, no problems. Good Luck
  11. I haven't sold a lot of items as yet, but, my larger pieces, I sign with my woodburner. Sometimes on the back of a frame, I will put the date & maybe the wood used. Something else I do is, carbon copy the font onto the wood & then just follow the lines with the woodburner. It is a little more precise & definate when finished. Good Luck
  12. Glad you found your treasure of blades. May I make a suggestion on your blade holder? I noticed that the blades are kind of mingled together. Just drill your holes a little deeper, & they will stand more straight upright. Just a thought, & me too, I wish I had all those blades. Great Find. Good Scrolling
  13. I agree with Len on doing the most difficult first & then work the rest of the pattern accordingly. I always feel that if I do the most difficult first & make a mistake, then I don't have a lot of time invested in an unfinished piece. Just try what you feel you can do. Confidence is a great partner with doing your first works of Art. Good Luck & enjoy scrolling.
  14. Welcome to the Village forum. Let us know what kind of saw you use & maybe what kind of Scrolling you would like to do. Hope you get the info that you need as you read the posts here. Good Luck !
  15. I'm overwhelmed with all the response. Thank you so much. I guess we don't realize our abilities by looking at our own works. I really appreciate your comments everyone. Thank you.
  16. I just finished this project of two Elk fighting. I wanted something that would fit on a long work piece & I chose this one. I added a lot of the back-ground to finish it. It is a 3/4 in. basswood slab with bark on the edges. I get some of this wood at our annual carvers show just for something different. It is a little too thick, but, I like the bark edging. I added a little color to it & coated it with tongue oil. The backer is just a piece of black foam sheeting glued on. Let me know what you think. I'm open for any critique. Thanks.
  17. After reading all of this great info, I have to say the problem is still, Over tightening. That's also caused somewhat due to the easier tightening 0f the blade clamp with the larger knobs that are easier to over tighten. The aluminum blade clamps on my 788 are easy to strip out, so I just keep telling myself, DON'T, when I clamp a blade, especially in the top clamp. I'm reminded each time I flatten a blade top. It might be from the spin of the end button not turning enough when I tighten the thumb screw. I need to clean them & oil them more often, so it will turn easier. Well, I tired already, so will quit rattleing on. Good Luck.
  18. Scroller, I use spiral blades most of the time. The only thing I can suggest is, use a very small spiral, like the Flying Dutchman New Spiral 2/0 or even better, the 3/0. They give you the least amout of fuzz on the back side & depending on the wood, they do cut clean for me. Like hard woods or some plys. too. I personally find it difficult to cut portrait & fret work with anything else. It does take practice, but, scrolling anything takes practice. I learned to use the spirals in a short time & really like using them. Hope you can find the right method for your future scrolling. Good Luck
  19. I like the oval knob. I made one up a while back & it works fine for me. I have a question about blade tightening, which has a lot to do with these types of knobs. Have you had a problem with your blade flattening out on the top, because of over-tightening? It's hard to feed through the drill hole after a while. I don't like tossing a blade, before it's time, just because of this. So, I'm thinking the smaller the knob, the less problem I will have with this. I never have a problem with blades slipping out of the clamp, so I'm assuming that I over tighten a bit. I have replaced my top & bottom clamps due to stripping the threads, so I am aware. Good Luck Perk
  20. JUST JOINED THE VILLAGE, RAY, & SAW YOUR POST. I AM FROM CEDAR RAPIDS, ORIGINALY. NOW LIVE IN ARIZONA. I WORKED FOR THE QUAKER OATS CO. FOR MANY YEARS, UNTIL MY RETIREMENT. GOOD TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE BACK HOME. HOPE YOU ENJOY THE SCROLLING AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN AT IT FOR MANY YEARS NOW. TAKE CARE. PERK
  21. Thank you everyone. I was wondering if it takes a while before a post is shown here? Is that right? I think I saw something about a delay for some things, but, not sure. I am wondering also about procedures and rules for the site? I guess I'll learn as I go along. Thanks Again. " Well, I see already that isn't so. Just read this posting. "
  22. Just got a chance to say Hi to everyone here at the Village. I'm Perk, from Arizona & have been scrolling for about 15 yrs. now. I had a Delta saw for several of those years & then bought a new DeWalt 788. I like doing portraits, plaques, but, not into Intarsia due to all the sanding it involves. I think the finished pieces of Intarsia are beautiful though. I was looking for a place to sign in, but, I guess this site doesn't do it that way. Thanks for the opportunity to join the group & looking forward to joining in on the forum. PERK
