Paul, I have had emails back and forth with Wolfgang and he said that what I am experiencing may or may not be part of the soft start. He also told me to clean the speed sensor inside the motor. I did that but it wasn't dirty. So, I don't know what to think. I almost had somebody close to me to come by or let me try his saw but that hasn't transpired yet. I'm not giving up though. I truly want this saw to work. What gets me is the ridiculous price they put on the speed control board. It's nothing but a handful of electronic parts. I don't even think there is an eprom in it. I'd love to get my hands on another one to try on my saw. That's the one downfall of Hegner. Their pieces and parts are ridiculously over prices. That's the same reason I will never own a German car. They are still trying to get even with us for kicking their ass in WW 2.

I'm just kidding about that. I already told her that I was going to sell one but she said, I don't care what you buy. But, realistically, I don't have that much room. I sort of have a soft spot in my heart for the Dewalt because I took the time to learn all about it, and then I rebuilt it so it runs and works flawlessly. The Hegner, well, I'm still not sure about it. I am not completely sold on the "soft start" and whether or not that is the problem that I have been having with it. At some point, I either have to determine what it is all about or just opt to get rid of it. Then, I will have room in the shop for the EX. If I find that I like the EX as you all say, well then it might be time for the Dewalt to go to someone who needs a good saw. There are about 5 of them on C/L right now but the sellers are out of their minds asking more than what a new one is going for. I'll wait until the market is in my favor to sell mine. The Heg, well I feel that I can just about double my money on it at any time. I'm in at this point about $350. So, I won't take a loss on it no matter what. No rush to judgment at this point.

Paul, I truly don't want to sell any of them. But, I'm really pushed for space, Maybe I'll figure out a way to keep them. The EX21 may not get its own stand. It may become a portable.

Ok, update. I just got off the phone with the seller. He told me that it belonged to his father who passed away 4 years ago. His father purchased it not too much before he passed. So, the saw has not been used much. The seller has tried once to use it to cut out a wooden car for his son but had nothing but trouble because of not knowing how to even put a blade in it. Anyway, he said he needs the space in the garage. The saw has never been firmly mounted since he has had it. We settled on his asking price. He told me that he would consider it sold until I can pick it up this weekend. I wanted to go get it tonight but he is still a working man and his schedule is pretty tight. So, either Friday or Saturday the saw will come to its new home. My dilemma now is which saw to get ride of. The Dewalt or the Hegner. Since the Dewalt is a similar mechanism and I have gotten used to it, I just might part with the Hegner. Or, maybe I'll keep all three and fib to my wife. Oh what to do, what to do?

Tony, I just tried as you suggested using Word. It works so great. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Now, if I can just learn a few of the things in Inkscape, I'm sizzling hot. WoW! Thanks again.

Darn! I have so much to learn. I sure wish one of you smart folks lived next door to me. I need help. I spend so much time on the computer trying figure out all the software packages that I never have time left to scroll. Thanks for the help Tony. I'll give that a try. Can I also place it anywhere on the page I want it to it will print in one of the four quadrants?

Wow! It would be interesting to know how many blades will fit in a large Folgers can. I'll bet thousands or maybe more.

What exactly would be a "show stopper". Other than a motor that doesn't motor or ????

Thanks Tgiro, that's the info that I need. I would not have known about the problem with the bottom clamps. I'm going to give the saw a good trial run too. I'm not familiar with the upper arm on these saws. Does it stay up on it's own or does it need some sort of "stay" added on?

Well Paul, wifey says something has to go because she isn't going to let me bring one into the house and my little shop is out of space. I'm thinking of selling the Hegner but ..........................maybe not.

Just yanking your chain Paul. I ruined my hearing after all the years of competitive pistol shooting and selling tools in body shops. Oh, and standing between two M-48 tanks when they fired simultaneously at Fort Irwin. The Aids really don't help much with the spoken word. Especially my wife. They call it "selective hearing". Ha!

It's probably not a bad idea to get in the habit of loosening the table adjusting knob everytime you sit at the saw for the first time that day and do the check it thing. It is so easy and fast, why not?

I had to do it that way because the lid was "frozen" on and even using Channellock pliers I couldn't get it loose. So, I did what you did what a screwdriver and popped the plastic off. Then, the pliers had a good grip and I got it open. From now on, that plastic comes off right away.

Does turning off my hearing aids work for "hearing protection" or do I need shooting muffs too?

I gave Kevin's labels a try. I bought a 100 pack on Amazon. So far I like them. But, my question to Kevin is this. How do you work with a small pattern on a huge label? It seems like such a waste to put a 3" pattern on an 11" sheet of paper. I'm not proficient yet with resizing my patterns or telling the printer how I want it printed. Maybe a little tutorial from you would be appreciated. So far though, I like the labels. Neat and clean and they stick very well.

Here are two pics that were posted in C/L. The table appears to have very little wear. Do these pics give any indication of it's place of manufacture or age? I'm probably going to go see it in person later this week. I was in touch last night with the seller. He is still a working stiff so I have to work around his work schedule. It's about a 50 mile drive each way. Thanks to you all for all the help.

I just found a used Excalibur EX21 near me for $300 with foot switch and a box of accessories. I emailed the seller because that was all that was available. If he still has the saw, I will run up to his place tomorrow to check it out. What should I be aware of besides the obvious? Do Ex's have any quirks to look out for? Just want to do my homework prior to going. Thanks to all. Ray

I was just going to say that but you beat me to it.

The manual says to tighten it down but they aren't meaning with the Quick Clamp I'll bet. The manual was written prior to the Quick Clamp availability more than likely. So, using the Quick Clamp we are probably supposed to loosen it up just a bit maybe? I leave it sort of loose and haven't broken any blades yet. But as I said, I haven't put too many hours on it so far. I'm still trying to figure out the motor speed problem.

Thanks for the tip. I will do that. Yesterday I made a dust collector for it so I won't have the huge mess that goes along with planing. I also found that the blades are reversible so I now have two new knives. The guy who had it before me must have planed gravel down to a very thin consistency. HA!

Being as new to this as I am, I still can't remember all the types and brands of blades that I'm using. When I get up from my saw, I write on a piece of paper what blade is in the saw. I lay the paper right on the saw table so I know when I go to the saw the next time, and it may be a while, what blade is still in the saw. So far, it has worked well for me.
