    I'll bet you can get a lot of scraps with the kids at school and all. I wish your classroom was a bit closer to me. I'd hang up all day just to use your equipment and maybe help the kids.

    Well said Brad. Like I said up above, the written word is so much easier to misunderstand that the spoken word. I know if we were all just sitting around a pot bellied stove somewhere and chatting about life in general, we'd all get along just fine. I am so thankful that I found this place to hang out, I just can't tell ya how much it means to me. Thanks to all for accepting me into your midst.

    I'd have to give that some thought Stoney. They are not all the same anymore but they are big enought that I took a compass and did a circle within them and I have about 3.5". I'll figure out something to use them for. Thanks.

    Well, I'm back again. I tried tung oil and watco oil both in clear. Since I "cheaped out" and used poplar for the seven middle layers of my basket instead of the maple that was called for, I'm having a very difficult time finishing this thing. I bought some stain and tried a couple of different colors on some scraps and nothing looks very good because of the poplar not taking stain the same way as the oak. Most of the basket is going to be the edges of the poplar and they turn almost black with whatever I put on them except the oil. Anyway, long story short, I don't have a clue what I'm doing or what I should do. I did just take a couple of scraps, taped them together to get an idea of how they would look and shot a couple of coats of clear shellac on them. That looks like it will turn out the best. My biggest problem at this point, is that I glued everything together and had planned on using whatever finish I decided on for the whole basket. I'm open for anybody's advice that might be given. HELP!

    I have seen quite a few Sakura saws for sale on C/L and very cheap. I mean $50 cheap. Another of their names is Scrollmate. Be on the lookout for any of the names.

    The reason I asked this question is, I just finished cutting out a basket from red oak and poplar. It has 9 layers and there were a ton of cutouts from the center sections. I have them neatly stacked right now on my bench and I was wondering where to put them other than the dumpster. The pieces started out as 6 x 10 and 1/4" thick. So, I have all the outer pieces that have corners still intact and of course, the centers. I think the centers might be useable for coasters or something like that. About 3 1/2" in diameter. The outer cutouts are pretty much scrap unless I can figure out a way to use the corners for something. Nothing comes to mind at this point. I guess I could use them for test pieces for staining. Maybe that's what they are good for. Aha!

    Well thanks folks. Now I have a good reason to not throw anything away. I'm not into intarsia but I can see where the little pieces might come in handy for jewelry. I think I'll have to give this some more thought.

    I am a wood "hoarder". I can't pass up a piece of wood when I see one lying around. And, once I've finished cutting something out, I can't bring myself to throw the leftovers into the trash bin. How small does a scrap have to be before it's considered "junk" and put into the trash? I don't have a wood burner so it all has to go into a dumpster. Am I the only one with this problem? My wife says I'm sick and need help.

    This visual brought back a memory of a project I did. We had a home with a brick hearth that was at floor level. It went from one wall to the other. The distance of about 15 feet. Anyway, I decided that I wanted to cut it down to the width of the actual fireplace plus a couple of inche on either side. So, I bought a masonry blade for my 7 1/4" saw and proceeded to cut across the bricks from front to back. A distance of about 20 inches. All went well until it was time for cleanup. I have never heard the end of it. I had brick dust throughout the entire house from top to bottom. Both stories. I forgot to "curtain" the area off. Ha! I never even thought about it. That's what inexperienced youth will get you.

    I went back and re-read that post and now I recall it. Thanks again for your efforts in providing the test results. I was wondering just how long these blades would last in softer woods and if they would be worth the cost if they worked as long as a dozen of the regular blades that everybody is using. The only way it makes any sense is to buy a large amount to secure the best shipping cost per blade. I'll just stick with the Pegas and FDUR I guess. I still want to try the FD PSR also.
