  1. On the subject of "wood burners", what brand, type, model # do most of you use? I have looked into buying one and I get just as confused as I do when looking at scroll saw blades. R
  2. I have found so many times that folks will tell me their computer died. They are ready to rush out and buy a new one. So far, on every one, I have found that by taking the covers off and vacuuming them out really good and making sure the power supply fan is operating like it should, I am able to resurrect them. Folks have no idea how much dust circulates through their computers. I have gotten in the habit of a yearly clean out. Even then it's usually dirtier than I would have expected. We have two cats and my computer gets full of cat hair. And my wife is a clean freak. We wear out vacuums like most folks wear out clothes. Anyway, just a word of caution. I have two 1 terabyte drives in mine and one of them is for the backup. Daily.

I did the exact same thing. I bought a very old type 1 off Craigslist. It came with a tubular stand and light. It had never been serviced as far as I know. I took it all apart and lubed all the bearings with synthetic grease per the fantastic video by Bob Brokaw. I still have a vibration issue but I'm working on that. It comes in at speeds over number 5 on the dial but I don't do much at those higher speeds. I just want to get as much vibration out of it as possible. All in all, I love the saw and if I can do as much with my $250 saw as others do on their $800 plus saws, well I'm a happy camper. Ray
  4. Another source that I have used both for blades and drill bits is Otto Frei. They specialize in watchmaker/jewelers tools. When I was first exposed to marquetry the instructor told us about his source, Otto Frei, and the prices were good. Ottofrei.com.
  5. As to the bullet train, if it ever got built out and only served two stops that might be ok but, every little wide spot in the road wanted to have service. That means many stops and starts. The 2.5 hours that were originally talked about would become 8 hours in the end. What kind of a bullet is that? A damned slow one is my answer. Just another boondoggle that would cost the taxpayer bazillions.
  6. God Bless You Spirithorse. Thank you for your service.
  7. Something just ventured through my mind. What's left of it anyway. At the risk of sounding like I've lost my potato chips, I was wondering if, since many of us have this in our shops, we might use Johnson's Paste Wax on our wooden creations. I understand that it might not be suitable for anything that is going to come in contact with food items but why not use it like any other wax?
  8. Thank you so much everybody. I have learned a lot here. My little basket, when all finished, will more than likely be used for peanuts, M & M's, or something of that nature. It might also become a dustcatcher displayed on a shelf somewhere. Who knows? It took my eye in the book and I knew I wanted to attempt it. I have learned a lot from the actual cutting it out. The first attempt was not what I would want to put my name on because I thought the layers were just too thin and I did a lousy job of cutting them. I'm still going to finish that basket but the second one will be my "show piece" so to speak. If I can get good enough at making them, I might consider selling them but being honest with myself, I don't really like making the same thing over and over. I get bored too easily and have to keep finding new things to explore. Just the learning curve of the different woods and finishes is going to take time. Thanks again to all.
  9. That sounds interesting Wayne but I don't have any idea how one would go about it. Can you explain the process? Is it a mixture or do you put on the oil and then the bees wax? Where do you buy bees wax? I hate to appear ignorant but I wouldn't have any idea where to buy it. And mineral oil, is that something that is easy to find?
  10. John T. I learned the same trick from my Dad but one time in another forum I mentioned using soap as a lube and some folks came back to me and said that soap corrodes the screws. Have you ever heard that? They all recommended using paraffin wax.
  11. Very nice John T.
  12. You devil you. I'm too old to have a M I L.
  13. Thanks for your advice. I have never used shellac. I've heard all about having to mix it or something. I also saw spray shellac at H/D. Would that work? As you can see, I have no experience with anything in the finish area. I can paint but when it comes to showing the wood through the finish, I'm at a total loss. I want to be able to see the wood but maybe not in it's natural look. I'm leaning toward some sort of a light stain but there again, I have no idea what to do and I don't really want to ruin what I have done so far. I kept a bunch of the scraps so I can test them for color so I guess I'll just dive in. I take it I will be using a brush and not a cloth?
  14. Somehow, your boot file got corrupted and by starting it with a cd, that had the file it was looking for. Now, go back and do a "disk cleanup" and then a defrag.
  15. Sorry Kevin, I should have said Watco Danish Oil. I have a can of "natural" finish that I used for a project in our motor home. Would it be ok?
  16. What exactly is Watco Oil? I have some of that on hand.
  17. Well said Jerry.
  18. Finishing has always been my weak point. I love to make stuff but I hate to sand and finish. But, now I find myself in the position of having to do it all. My wife no longer is able to help. Anyway, I'm in the process of making this layered basket as you all know by now and I have done all the cutting. I am only going to have to do minimal sanding. I want to put some finish on it and seeing as how it will hold edible items I know I must use some sort of safe finish. So, I am asking all of you who are way ahead of me in that category to offer up some advice. The top and bottom layer are red oak and the seven layers in between are poplar. The poplar had great coloring and I was able to alternate the dark and light wood color. So, I would like to take advantage of that. Thanks to all who reply.
  19. I have no idea how this got duplicated. Sorry.
  20. You said a mouthful Les. We can only hope that the RED wave continues.
  21. You are so right and it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon. We DO keep hoping though. Best of luck to you.
  22. I just wanted to say a "Thank You For Your Service" to all the Vets out there. Happy Memorial Day Everybody! Have a great day and Happy Scrolling. It was just brought to my attention that I might be confusing Memorial Day and Veterans Day. So, with that said, I will say "Thanks to all who have served and paid the ultimate price to protect our country".
  23. I would say that if it is obviously copyrighted, you don't copy it, even just for your own use. But if it's not, then go for it and if you know who designed it, give them some credit. JMHO!
  24. I use MDF for some of my jigs but nothing much else. Like some have said, too much dust and they can be damaged too easily. I tend to drop stuff and MDF corners don't do well when that happens.
  25. I guarantee you that you have not lost everything. I would need a lot of questions answered but I'll bet we can get your stuff back. Don't don anything else that might make it recoverable. What operating system are you running? Which version of Windows? If you can pm me all your info, I'll try to guide you through recovery.
