  1. Beer was at one time in cans that had no pull tab. So, a church key was necessary. A lot of us used to have one on our key chain.
  2. Angled to the left or to the right? Snicker snicker.
  3. I've posted the plans that I used for my stand. I got them from another site but I can't recall where. If you need them, I can shoot them to you. Not sure how to go about finding them here on SSV.
  4. I should have added to the topic heading, it's located in Westminster which is in Orange County, Ca.
  5. Have you got it mounted to something stable. I had a tough time getting the vibration out of mine until I built a very heavy stand for it and then put the whole thing on that rubber floor stuff. Now, it's smooth and very quiet. Good luck with your new saw.
  6. I just ran across this today. Seems like a steal for somebody. https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/tls/d/rbi-hawk-precision-scroll-saw/6611869900.html
  7. I'll give it another try Dan. It sure seems like it would be quicker and easier once a habit is formed. Thanks.
  8. Karl S., now you are going to have to "educate" the younger folks here on what a "church key" is. A lot of them have no idea what they missed in their short lives.
  9. I have the Jim Dandy arm lifter and I like it. It seems to keep the arm lifted to the maximum amount that it can go and I have never found it to be in my way. I'm left handed but I don't know what difference that would make. Maybe. Anyway, I tried top feeding and also found it awkward to reconnect the bottom of the blade. I guess with enough practice it might work out but right now, I'm a bottom feeder. I do hate that term though. I don't want to be associated with lawyers OR catfish. Oh well.....................
  10. That's surprising. I wonder what they elongated and for what reason. Is it just in the casting? Are the arms any different? Curious.
  11. Wow Scrappy. Thanks for that. I have a very nice Lowe's just a few minutes beyond the H/D.
  12. I see him posting on FB a lot and he has been busy. He got flooded in that rain last week too.
  13. We really do need a "WOW" icon here on SSV. You got a "WOW" deal. Now all you have to do is come up with some projects.
  14. I went to Home Depot the other day to buy some MinWax stain. They have it all on close-out sale. I asked why they only had 3 colors of gel stain and they told me that Sherwin-Williams has bought out MinWax so H/D is dropping them. Have any of you folks heard that or is it B.S.? I know Lowes still has it but I didn't go there yet. At least they have it online. H/D doesn't even show it anymore online. Nothing but Verathane.
  15. I love your shop room. I'd love to bring my saw in the house but Mama says NO!!!
  16. I'll bet you can get a lot of scraps with the kids at school and all. I wish your classroom was a bit closer to me. I'd hang up all day just to use your equipment and maybe help the kids.
  17. Great idea. See what each of us can come up with using only our scraps.
  18. And by all means try to fit in the time to watch the set of videos produced by Gwinnette Woodworkers by Bob Brokaw. It goes into great detail on how to maintain the Dewalt 788 which almost identical to the saw you are getting. Also, check out Ricks Scrollsaw.com
  19. I'm sending a year's worth as we speak. Thanks for the tip.
  20. Well said Brad. Like I said up above, the written word is so much easier to misunderstand that the spoken word. I know if we were all just sitting around a pot bellied stove somewhere and chatting about life in general, we'd all get along just fine. I am so thankful that I found this place to hang out, I just can't tell ya how much it means to me. Thanks to all for accepting me into your midst.
  21. I'd have to give that some thought Stoney. They are not all the same anymore but they are big enought that I took a compass and did a circle within them and I have about 3.5". I'll figure out something to use them for. Thanks.
  22. I think that's what I'll do. thanks.
  23. Yeah Dan, you're probably right about that. For the prices of them, they'd have to do something special to make them worthwhile.
  24. Well, I'm back again. I tried tung oil and watco oil both in clear. Since I "cheaped out" and used poplar for the seven middle layers of my basket instead of the maple that was called for, I'm having a very difficult time finishing this thing. I bought some stain and tried a couple of different colors on some scraps and nothing looks very good because of the poplar not taking stain the same way as the oak. Most of the basket is going to be the edges of the poplar and they turn almost black with whatever I put on them except the oil. Anyway, long story short, I don't have a clue what I'm doing or what I should do. I did just take a couple of scraps, taped them together to get an idea of how they would look and shot a couple of coats of clear shellac on them. That looks like it will turn out the best. My biggest problem at this point, is that I glued everything together and had planned on using whatever finish I decided on for the whole basket. I'm open for anybody's advice that might be given. HELP!
