  1. Kevin, as you know, I'm a cheapskate. I webt to H/D abd bought a Ryobi mandrel for $6 and a refill pack of 240 grit from Klingspor. I put it all together forming an 8-point star and cinch it all down tight. I use it in a hand drill and it worked well enough that I bought 2 more mandrels and a 180 & 320 grit refill pack. I take a wood scrap and run the sanders hard against the wood to "soften" them up. Once broken in they work great. I don't have problems with fuzzies on the things I make so I can't say anything regarding that. Also there is some confusion over the different types of "mops". Mine are a star wheel type. I've not been able bring myself to pop for the style that mounts to a bench grinder.
  2. Just tell yourself that someone beat you to it and move on. Something better around the next corner.
  3. I've always wondered just how many Hawks came back with bad Fasco motors. 1, 2, 1000? How many are still out there just chugging away?
  4. You sound just like me. Can't stand to pass up a deal. That's why I've got 3 saws and almost had a 4th Friday. You'll find space.
  5. Looks sorta like a PS Woods saw.
  6. You're right. I said it in mild jest.
  7. I wonder, just out of curiousity, if they will ever offer any sort of blade re-sharpening service. I know that would be asking a lot but if they can make the blades, they should also be able to sharpen them. I'll be watching your posts.
  8. Where did your benefactor get it? H/D, Lowe's, ???
  9. Yes, truly sad that everything went to China. Time to bring manufacturing back to this country.
  10. I've heard that Finnish birch is good but I guess they are considered "Baltic". Not sure about supplies coming from there.
  11. Yes, it would be a no.
  12. My wife and I are trying very hard not to buy anything from China. I'd be looking for some other choice. JMHO.
  13. Bill, it sounds like he already has one. Read his post again.
  14. I have 2 Excaliburs and a Hegner similar to yours with the front tension release lever. There is definitely a difference between the 2 types of saws. A learning curve for both but more with the Hegner. If I had to make a choice, I'd keep my Ex's. As to your problem with the quick clamp take a look at the rotating tip that contacts the blade. Make sure it's flat. The same as your Dewalts. Also, make sure the Quick clamp is tight in the saddle that it sits in. As per the instructions that came with it. Congrats on a great gift. They are bullet proof and once you get used to it, will last a lifetime. Check out Scrimper's videos on youtube. He's a Brit with a lot of Hegner know-how.
  15. Very nice.
  16. Or, how about making serving trays out of them. I think a "rustic" tray would sell well. I'd plane them all to the same thickness, on the bottom of the slats though so that the wine stained wood would be on top.
  17. How about using the glued up panels as backboards for sayings with cutout letters or words of different fonts? If you have enough of them you are in a new business.
  18. You all are too kind. Thank you for putting up with me.
  19. A couple flower vases. I found some patterns I like but gotta change em up a bit.
  20. Done! Except for a coat or 2 of Zinnser's shellac.
  21. Short boards usually snipe more than long ones.
  22. John, you sly dog! Take a bow. I've learned so much from doing your patterns I can't begin to thank you enough. I do look forward to possibly becoming one of you makers. I'm still waiting for the patterns to arrive.
  23. Make a planer bed our of melamine. There are videos on how to make one. You need more support than what the planers give you.
  24. You said it correctly. That's what I meant but phrased it wrong.
  25. Let me clear up what I wrote. I said that the 2 pattern sides had to be square to each other. Wrong! All 4 sides must be square. The side that is down and in contact with the table is what dictates how perpendicular the cutting is to the blade so it must be parallel to the top side. As to the question of how much extra wood you have that is not part of the pattern, it just makes sense to trim off the excess so as not to be cutting wood unnecessarily.
