Brenda, how do you do that? Is it freehand with a pyrography pen? I've been trying to sign my stuff with a pyro pen but nothing as nice as yours. I've thought about a branding iron but that requires a torch. Too much hassle. Please advise.

Dave, these aren't compound cut. Straight up cuts all on one board. Really an easy project. The mortise/tenons have to be tight though.

I ran across 3 patterns that were supposed to be bud vases. I decided to make one and insert a flameless candle instead. I had to make a couple alterations so that the switch and battery door were available. I bought a set of 3 2 inch candles, a 2" & 4" along with the 6", so I shrunk the pattern to accommodate them. Two more candle holders in the works. This one is oak and cherry with just one coat of Watco natural oil. I don't know the pattern designer's name.

Years ago I had a Sand-O-Flex unit that could be used in a drill or on a bench grinder. It had a cartridge that had the slit emery cloth that was on a spool and as you used it and it wore out, all you had to do was loosen the center hub nut and turn out some fresh cloth. It was a neat deal and as long as I had it I never had to buy a refill for it. I don't know if they are still available. Anybody ever seen one? Mine got sold when we sold out to go full-time RV. Edit: I just did a quick search and found a bunch of pics and sources. This is a pic of what mine looked like. Sort of.

I've got a Dewalt 12" compound miter saw, not a slider and it is quite accurate if you take the time to set it up correctly. I have never bought anything that was correctly adjusted from the factory so that is the first thing I do. I'm going to sell what I have as it is just to big and heavy to be "fun to use". I'm leaning toward the Ridgid 10" sliding miter saw from Home Depot. Just waiting for the price to come down a bit before I jump. If you are anywhere near me, I'd be willing to let you borrow my Dewalt to either test out, buy or just use. It's a beast though. Too heavy for my old back anymore. I used it to cut wide crown moldings and it worked great for that.

Here is what I have bought in the past from Klingspor. As you can see, if you buy the starter kit, it's pricey. So, as I said, I buy a mandrel and make my own. Even spending the $20 plus shipping is against my grain so to speak. I have toyed with making my own from emery cloth but so far haven't attempted it. Anyway, this is what I have purchased.

Kevin, as you know, I'm a cheapskate. I webt to H/D abd bought a Ryobi mandrel for $6 and a refill pack of 240 grit from Klingspor. I put it all together forming an 8-point star and cinch it all down tight. I use it in a hand drill and it worked well enough that I bought 2 more mandrels and a 180 & 320 grit refill pack. I take a wood scrap and run the sanders hard against the wood to "soften" them up. Once broken in they work great. I don't have problems with fuzzies on the things I make so I can't say anything regarding that. Also there is some confusion over the different types of "mops". Mine are a star wheel type. I've not been able bring myself to pop for the style that mounts to a bench grinder.

I've always wondered just how many Hawks came back with bad Fasco motors. 1, 2, 1000? How many are still out there just chugging away?

I wonder, just out of curiousity, if they will ever offer any sort of blade re-sharpening service. I know that would be asking a lot but if they can make the blades, they should also be able to sharpen them. I'll be watching your posts.

I've heard that Finnish birch is good but I guess they are considered "Baltic". Not sure about supplies coming from there.

I have 2 Excaliburs and a Hegner similar to yours with the front tension release lever. There is definitely a difference between the 2 types of saws. A learning curve for both but more with the Hegner. If I had to make a choice, I'd keep my Ex's. As to your problem with the quick clamp take a look at the rotating tip that contacts the blade. Make sure it's flat. The same as your Dewalts. Also, make sure the Quick clamp is tight in the saddle that it sits in. As per the instructions that came with it. Congrats on a great gift. They are bullet proof and once you get used to it, will last a lifetime. Check out Scrimper's videos on youtube. He's a Brit with a lot of Hegner know-how.
