  1. I have a dedicated shop that I thought I layed out great...not. Every time I bring in something new or different it turns into a redesign. I am always trying to improve dust collection, storage, or work flow. Last spring I started intarsia and I am still trying to setup an adequate sanding station. I doubt working on the shop will never end.
  2. Ike, put your nose near the motor. Does it smell burnt? If so the motor is likely toast. It happened to me.
  3. Larry it will do two things. If you can't turn it at all the motor or main bearing is frozen/seized. What you are turning is the main shaft. Less likely there could be a bad spot on the coil (windings) and by turning it you get past it.
  4. NO! While it is very unlikely you will burn the house down you will burn the motor out. Motors will burn out as the result of higher then expected or lower then expected voltage. The motor on your machine was not designed for variable speed.
  5. Un plug the saw then look at the end of the motor. In the center you will see small slot like a screw.Using a screw driver turn it about a 1/2 turn (either way). Then plug the saw back in and try again.
  6. Cutting without a pattern is a lot easier then you think. I talked my self out of cutting puzzles for years until I made up my mind to "waste" a couple pictures. Look at the picture and start cutting along the edged of objects. You will get the hang of it very quickly. An you know those pictures I thought I would waste. They made perfect puzzles.
  7. I wear glasses and the 3M half respirator is fine. I do find I need to take the glasses off, put the respirator on and then put the glasses back on.
  8. I also us 1/4" baltic birch plywood for all my card and photo puzzles but I have never cut pieces that small. I use plywood because it is more stable then solid wood with less twisting and warping.
  9. Here are a few tips I learned along the way. Number 1 If it is not comforatble you won't wear it so you wasted your money. Number 2 If your glasses fog the mask is not fitting right and dust is getting in. I wear this one. It works for me. And the actual filters are replaceable. For the record I do not have a beard or mustache which will make a difference in what mask you use. https://smile.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-Respirator-6291-Particulate/dp/B000FTEDMM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1483970291&sr=8-7&keywords=respirator+mask
  10. Hit -2 this morning at my place. When it goes below 0 in North Carolina you know it is cold. Shop over night got down to 48. I think I will start working on my taxes.
  11. The high in my part of central NC reached 27 today with a 16 wind chill. The 8" of snow we had yesterday helped that. Tonight they are predicting 0 or lower. My shop heater keeps it in the upper 40's in this weather. If I crank it up and wait 3-4 hours it will reach 60 but the electric meter spins. When it gets this cold I find other things in the house to do.
  12. Before you get any ideas I have already spoken at lenght to the good folks that now make the Hawk. There is no way to convert these older units to make them top feeders like the G-4.
  13. I hate to be Mr Gloom and Doom. I know your heart is in the right place. I am not a lawyer but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn once and I have been around the block a few times. I just hope Harvey did not sign any agreements with WTB and just forgot. Many of these pattern shops do sign exclusive agreements on patterns they carry. By doing this service you now became a competitor of WTB. An of course you thought about the tax man. I would hate to see anyone get into legal troubles trying to be a nice guy.
  14. You can go on the internet and download Star Wars or other images and make puzzles from them. You just can't sell them or even donate them to charity.
  15. I have a JDS air-tech. A great machine.
  16. Hey we almost have enough scrollers in NC that we can have a picnic or at least a cook out. Welcome.
  17. I have not done a lot of clocks but the few I did the clock insert had a rubber ring. I am not sure all clock inserts have these but mine did. When you took the clock out of the piece that you scrapped did you keep the rubber ring?
  18. We all like a bargain and that seems especially true of scrollers. So folks don't forget ebay. I have purchased several used books at a faction of the cost and have never had a issue of missing pages or pages so damaged they could not be used.
  19. I make puzzles out of Christmas cards. After mounting the card on the wood (I use 3M Super 77 and spray both the wood and the card stock) I coat my cards with spray shellac. I get the spray shellac at Lowes. It works for me. I have tried the spray lacquer and did not care for the finish. I have not tried the Triple Glaze or Modge Podge that Dan mentioned.
  20. I cut a lot of puzzles and I know a lot of others who cut puzzles. Plywood even high dollar plywood is not the wood of choice for stand up puzzles. The concern is chipping and splintering of the thin veneers at the edges.
  21. Great choices. You will be busy for a long time.
  22. As a member of the Lake Gaston Lions Club I salute you.
  23. This will get lots of replies. Maybe more then the infamous top feeder vs bottom feeder discussions. For many spirals are a love them or hate them proposition . They do not cut like a flat blade and it takes sometime learning to use them but so does learning to use a flat blade. Personally they are not my favorite but they do serve a purpose so I use them when I think the cut calls for it. Yes they cut a wider kerf then a flat blade but sometimes a project needs that. I use them the most when cutting pictures. IMHO they are not good for puzzles, segmentation, or intarsia but others may disagree.
  24. Sorry. Nothing that I am aware of.
