  1. for me theres beena few variables. first one being practice. theres been times after cutting ive thought i should have had the grain direction differently. theres times when im doing something like an eagle, i try and get the grain to flow with the feathers. basically i try and envision the work completed and how it would look. ill take the pattern and set it on the wood and move it around. sometimes i really complicate it and end up putting a pattern away for a bit.
  2. kevin, are you referring to the clamps on the EX? if so, maybe im not understanding or maybe im doing it wrong, but i just push the blade all the way back in the clamp and clamp. i havent really noticed any problems doing it that way.
  3. jim, your work is truly astounding. i think im going to have to give inlay a try soon.
  4. marg, ya'll do have some very nice woods in australia i would love to have a supply of. we have a menards locally that opened about a year or so ago. that had a LOT of the blue stain pine in 4" and 6" wide and 8 and 10 foot length. a lot, as in entire bunks. if i would have thought a bit about it then i would have seriously stocked up. this time i had to do some digging to find a pair of 1 by 6's with the stain.
  5. yup, its like curly/flame/quilted maple. theres millions of bd ft of maple cut every year, but a very small percentage is curly/flame/quilted.
  6. im upgrading my picture takin machine.seems my sister has pushed me to start selling my work and i gotta have high quality pictures, so sis is going to bring over her equipment this weekend and we';re going to set up a booth type thing in the basement. right now i just use my tablet, but dont know why it has that foggy look. seems to be happening on everything i snap a picture of with it.
  7. its quite amazing what a frame can do. with this one, i think the right mat and framed it would be outstanding
  8. thanks! believe it or not, that was a mistake. i made this inside dimensions of the frames the same size as the work. DOH! i happened to have some oak in the lumber rack so cut/planed some down to 1/2" by 1/2" and cut to fit.
  9. a little closer pic of one of them
  10. i think i had about 10 ish hours cutting this over a while. im thinking there was around 300 cuts. fun one and i think the blue stain pine with oak trim makes it pretty nice. seems my thoughts for a winter project have changed from a couple months ago. now my main project is dont freeze in the shop!:)
  11. wowzer!!! a grizzley 18" open end drum sander is $895 https://www.grizzly.com/products/18-1-1-2-HP-Single-Phase-Open-End-Drum-Sander/G0458 quite a few other options for drum sanders at that price!
  12. what #1 FD blade are ya using? ultra reverse give me good results.
  13. one suggestion i have: start with the lightest colors and go to the darkest when painting
  14. reads like either table not square to blade or forcing the wood into the blade. gotta let the blade do the cutting. checking square is pretty simple- i think theres a video or 2 on YT that shows the process.
  15. ive been to your etsy site and your work is top notch. lasers have a place and some people only care about price. however, there is a market that is growing again, which youre proving, for true handmade work and people will pay for that.
  16. although i dont do shows, ive been asked similar, too. ive been thinking about making a little writeup to put with my work to explain how to tell the difference between works done with a cnc, laser, and scrollsaw.
  17. thanks all for the kind compliments. ralph, i used #3 spiral blades and #56 drill bit. i drill the holes in areas where i can feather the edges of the vein to make the hole disappear.
  18. John, thats going to be a nice project(s). thinking on the flag for the entire back- so it can be seen through the lettering- or not....hhmmmm.... im really not sure. maybe make some with the flag behind it all and some not? see which ones sell more?( i think i read something about these going to be for sale?). im thinking right now if the flag was a smaller scale i think it would be nicer- more detail of the flag showing? im also thinking gloss on the flag picture and satin on the woodwork. or vice versa.
  19. thanks, scrappile. ya know, its really not that difficult to do a mat. main thing i remembered on this one was having the mat before building the frame. theres places online that sell custom size mats, too, and might even be a local framing shop that can do it,too. plus quite a few good videos on youtube to use as guides. one extra thing i did on these i hadnt done before is add a dust cover on the back. found out through youtube its real easy. note- i didnt make the mat on these. i would have gotten glue and fingerprints all over them!
  20. ive been taking my time on these ones, mainly on the frames, which i seriously complicated! 4 pieces of wood with miters on the ends?nnNNNOOOoo- i gotta get thinking about fancy schmancy stuff! i should have the last one framed and ready to ship today. although a little rough mentally lately, making them for my cousins hubby, brother, and parents has given me a little time of peace and serenity.
  21. thank you all for the kind comments.although ive been on here since ive posted this, ive been a wee scatter brained and apologize for not thankin ya'll sooner. the service was saturday and it was extremely packed with people and the family was quite busy with everyone coming and going, so i didnt feel it the appropriate time to give these to the kids. however, i had a feeling of making something for my cousins parents, brother, and hubby, so im working on a trio of angels from a jeff zaffino pattern i picked up years ago. i'll ship the ornaments with those to the hubby. thanks again for the kind comments again. now, its time for me to go complicate frames for these other angels im makin!
  22. its been a bit of emotional time here in my family. i got news early sunday afternoon that a cousin of mine, amy, died in her sleep. an unknown aneurysm. she was 45 . an amazing mother of 3, wonderful wife to an amazing husband, loving, supportive sister of 1 brother, amazing daughter, friend, and exceptional employee- she was a pediatric physical therapist at beaumont hospital in royal oak. amy helped many children through PT along with their families over the years. she was supportive of everyone in her life and also crazy funny-always lookin at the brighter side and finding something funny to help get through tough times. im not good at words in times lime this, but kind of good at making dust, and was reminded of this pattern when thinking about what her 3 children(all pre teen) are going through and will be going through. i know it wont stop the greiving, but hope they may help them find even a little comort at some time in the future.
  23. kevin, ya may want to take a measurement and see if the arm is level with the table. there should be a white line on the adjustment knob up top and to the back. get that facing to ya then measure distance from the arm to the table- both at the back of table and at the front. i found i dont have to get crazy accurate there- its either going to be exact or if the adjustment knob is a turn off, very noticable. one way i noticed that on mine is i couldnt get the blade all the way back in the upper clamp.
  24. i used to work in a machine shop and used cabide tools quite a bit. then got into framing houses using carbide tipped saw blades. slow down the saw feed speed and i could cut through nails without damaging the carbides. ive also cut aluminum on my miter saw with an 80 tooth carbide tipped blade. no problems and no damage to the carbide as long as feed speed is taken into consideration.
  25. just my opinion, but go with whats worked for a very long time on thousands of cars for spacers- aluminum. .
