    after getting the VS fixed on my excaliber i was making quite a bit of dust. having an enjoyable day in the shop and wouldnt ya know it, the top blade clamp decided to strip its threads. i guess 4 years and a jillion times threading through holes finally wore it out. i have faith ray at seyco will have me back in business before the weekend. now i have no excuse to put some finish and ribbons on ornaments!

    i havent found a better topcoat for ourdoor signs that the unpigmented(non tinted) sherwin williams A100. i have a log cabin bird feeder with white oak for framing and cedar shake shingles that i put out 5 years ago,which the feeder is on a stand i screwed into a tree.. 3 coats of A100 and its still in great shape after 5 michigan weather years.

    kev, if ya dont have one yet, ya may want to consider a wixey gage for getting the blade perfectly 90 degrees to the table. comes in handy for other things,too. i use it to check my drill press table alignment with the chuck.

    foxfold, if ya figure out how to switch them over to red, can ya let us know? i still cant figure it out. cut one pattern that had red lines and what a breeze it was. but cant figure out how to make black lines red on my printer.

    i thought i read something about direct drives not having the depth capacity of belt? the blade wont raise up as high on direct drive?and something about blade tilt- something like direct drives dont tilt as far as belt drive?

    on a table saw its possible as long at the hole matches the arbor. i used to run a 7 1/4 combo" blade for a long time. they have enough capacity to cut at least 1 1/2" thick material on a TS.

    i have an 80 tooth freud in my chopsaw, another 80 tooth that goes on my ts plus a combo and glue line rip all freud. personally dont think the glue line rip was worth it and it collects a lot of dust but the others can get a workout. the combo stays on the TS the most and has been a workhorse. i have had it for about 8 years now with 1 sharpening so far. they all cut real good for me. IF i were to look at a different brand of blade it would be an infinity https://www.infinitytools.com/saw-blades-accessories/table-saw/table-saw-blades/combination-saw-blades pretty good prices on their saw blade packages ive read nothing but praise for them,too. great place for jointer/planer blades,too.

    my opinion? if you dont need a slider or dual compound, look at the dewalt DW715 or a makita ls1040

    yowzer thats some close flooding there! i sure hope everything turns out ok at the homefront. i could see me seeting up my scroll saw on that porch!

    apparently there is a show called "scandal" the customer follows. not sure what the show is about, but theres stuff going on around a conference table often. she loves the table and wanted something to look like it. i did some digging and found out the woods used in the table were ebony,butternut,and walnut which would have made a very pricey chest top, let alone for a movie prop. so since the customer is a michigan native i decided to use locally grown woods in this. cut the cost way down,too!

    thanks all for the comments. on a side note, if anyone happens to have to ship something large like this, look into greyhound shipping. commerce twp,mi to norfolk,virginia ranges anywhere from $90 to $200- depending on whether station to station,station to door, door to station, or door to door. not bad for something this size.

    typically only one scrollsaw project at a time but it is very rare that i dont have some other project going on,too- watching glue dry is rather boring so i have to occupy my time.

    i was asked if i could build a "basic blanket chest" with the only real requirement being how the top looked. i dont do "basic" very good. all native michigan woods in this- walnut,hickory,and maple for the top. birch for the frame, contre' plaque panels( thats actually french for plywood but plywood isnt elegant enough. and didnt come from michigan but close enough- it was bought in michigan), and cedar lined. along with the letters, i had to use the scrollsaw to do the radius on the bottom of the rails. this has been one of my favorite pieces to build over the years and honored to have been asked to build it.

    UPDATE! new VS speed control arrived, installed, and problem solved.

    i have some dust to make and as long as the speed settles down after hunting a bit im good until the replacement get here. if i get this work done before the replacement comes in ill definately tear into it and take a look.

    good on ya! yer a better mechanic than a lot of mechanics-many just keep tearing off and bangin stuff creating an even more expensive repair without readin how-to's and you took the time to read instructions. ive been scollin since 06 and im still just practicing. thats pretty much all i do with whatever im doing- even walking. i can mess up that even but glad im just practicing.

    i called ray this AM and he seems to think the speed control,too- given the symptoms. with the caveat that electrical gremlins are.....welp...gremlins. ordered up a new speed control as im not the greatest at cross referencing and all that online and no place locally i have faith in helping me. so we shall see in a few days.

    thanks,all. kevin, i happened to pull the brushes after typing this. the brushes have a lot of wear left on them. ray, i used some CRc electric control cleaning spray on the ponteniometer control thingy( that is what its called on my schematic. ) with no luck. looks like a call to ray in the AM. i was out scrolling a bit and the speed will stay put once it finds its speed. touch the speed control and it goes bonkers- hunts for a bit then finds the speed and settles in. i wonder if anyone ever had any luck with the lifetime warranty on these saws.....................................

    ive had a few projects end up with about a 150-220 grit finish due to wind gusts. that led me to plan my spraying for early mornings or late evenings when winds are calmest.

    and NOT the easiest thing to build. reason not easy to build? welp, ive lived in michigan my entire life. been a lions fan as long as i can remember. so NOt easy to say,"sure thing!" now the funny part: its for a friend that lives in seattle and is a seahawks fan. her husband is from wisconsin and a packers fan. we lions fans arent fond of green bay. hes a mason and has some days hes hurtin and wants to kick back with his feet up. however, they have a pair dogs- an american bulldog and a heeler. big dogs! buuuut, they go crazy when he lifts the footrest on his recliner. so hes not able to kick back too comfortably. hopefully this helps him and he likes my little lions touch to it.
