  1. Help ! I need some baltic birch to make some box backs hoping for close to 1/8 or a tad thicker - in sheets - any help is appreciated - locally their is nothing near me !
  2. Martin , If i was close by I would gladly do your 350 , its a well cared for machine -looks new but with the packing and shipping it would add a couple hundred or more to the price and be hard to do - You will easily find a new home for your saw - I'll keep my eyes open in my neck of the woods - with time one will show up. The best to you my friend ! If anyone hears about any older 18 inch hegners in the Western NY area let me know- Tony
  3. your getting a very good deal - just make sure it runs good - they can have their problems - check on the age and call hegner to check on parts availability - should be fine , good luck my friend !
  4. I guess it depends on your area - Im near to Buffalo and scrolling just isnt like it use to be - But we do have a following - but im not seeing as many scrollers as we use to have at any of the shows we do. . I use to belong to a Scrollers club in hamburg New York - but our membership was dwindling , now its gone- i think were a dying breed - which makes me understand why no-one bought the Eclipse company when Ernie Mellon passed away -which by the way is a great saw but impossible to get parts for- . and they made that saw in ( i believe in 3 ) different versions -which even makes it worse getting help. ill keep my eye open on Facebook Market place in my area - either that or just buy a new Pegas - I enjoyed the conversation ! Thanks Tony B.
  5. I get the Arthritus , ive got that to - but what helps me is playing the guitar . My doctor told me if you use it, it helps you ( especially the guitar ) not so sure about scrolling- not sure ill be cutting a few years from now -just hoping i can hold on - Tony B.
  6. Martin , i am very interested in your 18v , Ive seen the newer model go used for about 250.00 with the stand - but yours is in great shape - so id do that ( plus shipping ) you can keep the light, chair and book - let me know what you think- Im serious ! Tony Burns [email protected]
  7. Hi Barb i have a system like the wren ( can't recall the name its hanging in my shop on 4 steel chains ) it works good - i also have a secondary Air filtration system which is basically a box fan with a filter paper in the front of it - which is about the same thing and easier to use ( plus its way cheaper and easy to move around ) - plus i of course have an older Dust collector ( grizzly 2 bagger ) all three of these are different in ways- technically you dont need a dust collector if all you do is scrolling ( maybe a broom and dustpan ) Where i would start is by using a dust respirator mask - 8210 plus N95 ( 3m )
  8. Scroller Pete , Wondering if you know of a cheaper place to buy Pegas blades -?

    Eclipse

AMAZINGSCROLLER - i remember seeing and using Ernie's very first hand welded machine ( gold color ) at the PA scrollers picnic , this was a very long time again -he had the very first Milatary Blue frame and a few parts to show you what it would look like when it was done - ordered mine on the spot ! been worried about him -not able to contact him via phone or the net -even sent him a couple of letters with a piece of my work -no reply -i hope hes OK -he's a brother by different parents.

    Eclipse

I own 3 eclipse saws - i own the second one Ernie made and one of the very last ones hes made . ( plus another ) Hes a very nice person but presently his health has not been good ( as a prior poster mentions ) Before his health issues he was great about helping with parts - Ive had to depend on a local motor repair shop and a friend whos a machinist to help me with repairs . I may of worn out my friendship with him recently- becasue of how hard it is to work on the saw. Their an extremely durable machine -but i cut on mine full time . ( stuff happens ) - the frame is like a spiders shell ( the parts are inside the exterior frame - i dont have small hands ) I love the saws -and all three are slightly different ( Ernie mades changes as he went along ) Been hoping Ernie will sell the company so i can buy a couple of new machines from someone -but no luck so far . Ernie has been a good friend - and i hope and pray all is well with him -- God bless him !
  11. I had a 30 inch excaliur - a nice saw -the only problem I had was that it was too big it was a pain to reach the back of the saw - Wish i kept it Ray can tell you about parts availability - call him first
  12. They can pile up very quickly - I tend to save the fine # 3 blades -sometimes with a very soft piece of wood -the new blades cut too quickly and tear the grain - a worn blade cuts slower and believe it or not typically cuts cleaner ( thou slower -which is probably why their cleaner ) Most sizes like 5-9 are shot when they reach the end of their lives - they get put in a Large folgers can and go to the recycle center when its close to being full-so they dont hurt anybody .
  13. Thanks shawn ( and all ) Were doing a show their at the institute this weekend (over today ) My brother in law lives not far from you in the village of Wilson ( thou hes not a scroller ) Not sure how to post pictures -or id put a few of the treadles on . Tony
  14. Hegners are a bit tempermental -i own 2 of them For some reason the bolts that hold it to the stand have to be tighened one at a time but not super tight at first-go in a circular pattern ( one after the other - a little at a time ) until their all tight -though this was silly - but Hans at Hegner ( not sure if hes still their-was some time ago ) Told me thats the trick - and yes it does work Getting the tension right on the blade also helps - ( dont over do it ) make sure you oil that sucker every now and then ( mine gets oiled every time i use it ) my dad use to say that oil is cheap and it makes stuff last a long time - he was right . Those saws are a bit tricky -but very habit forming - Id start out with some of the bigger blades till you get the hang of it . Those very fine blades break fast when your new at the machine - once you get the feel for the machine - they will last longer - so dont let the fact that your breaking blades bother you at first -its all in experience and time . Hegner may or may not send you a manual for the beast- and their maybe some where on the net when you can download a copy of it - not sure if i still have mine - Id have to look - if someone does they can always scan it and attach it to an email - their not very big ( a few pages ) Hope this helped ! Tony
  15. Depends on the color of the boards , and the grain pattern - many times wood can be glued and its hard to tell ( if your careful ) by alternating the grain - in other words one up one down etc ( alternate the grtain direction ) -it can keep the wood from warping . I use to be a Industrial Arts teacher -many times its hard to find a board thats wide enough it is very common and a smart practice to do that - Ive found with Oak , hardness can vary greatly between different boards - Ive had some which seemed easy to cut and others that were like inpossible - good luck - been their !
  16. Welcome Kevin, from another newby here ( thou ive been a scroller like forever ) i have a son who lives in Cincinnati ( thou hes not a scroller ) I love Kings island and your Zoo -
  17. What sufices is putting your left hand or a finger or two on the table of the saw and pushing with the other hand against the finger in a straight motion - you will get a stright cut -take your time and if it zig zags at all try a more agressive blade like a 459 olsen ( # 9 blade -skip precision ground ) depnds on the wood or your saw as to how fast it will cut -experimentation is the key !
  18. Hello fellow scrollers ! Not sure if i was a member before ( you know how that brain of ours works ) ran into this site and though it would be fun to connect with folks who are passionate about their saws - Im a full time Scroller - and a collector of treadle Scrollsaws . Tony
