How does one decide when to change blades (as in dull)
Puzzleguy replied to Robert R's topic in General Scroll Sawing
A couple of things I can tell when its dogs out - when it starts to fight me - and i look at the teeth of a blade , if they start getting bluish or discolored ( just where it cuts ) its worn out -
kinda like buying a truck , but the TRUCKS probably 40+ grand the saw is 4-5 hundred , and maybe lasts longer - in the long run

Selliong Compound Cut ornaments

Impossible to make everything 100 percent safe - consider doing your best and carry insurance - and dont run with sharp objects ! -
When we first moved to where we are now , I had alot of problems with my polymax - it shook like crazy , i tried making a large square work bench thinking it might work , it didnt - I tried a recycled rubber mat ( about a 1 1/2' thick - didnt work - So i took a view point of doing it right so i cut a area out of my floor ( between joists ) used the iron rebars , crossed them , wired them together - and had a concrete pad poured - made it big enough for three saws - and it is great . Not a cheap solution - but a commercial solution

All well and good , but it feels like a mom and pop business situation that goes aray - sometimes going fancy can hurt you more than help - we just use a sharpie on the back - with the copyright date and our names . I feel that when i get fancy i will loose myself trying to be fancy . Thou we know someone who makes alot of train whistles and has to do this ( he sells to stores as well ) That laser engraver is neat - but ill keep my money in the bank. -
Welcome tony to the forum ! a nice group of folks here -

I bought a very small piece from home depot ( Miss the baltic birch ) it had a very rough exterior on one side - thou it said birch and Im not convinced it is - like alot of things from china - buyer beware ! Alot of things coming from china are scams and fake - i try and stay away from anything from china . Im having a problem getting lawnmower parts from china - Kohler went to china and i have a lawn mower and it needed a gas pump -Ive gone threw 3 of them in less than a year . Im looking for a new lawn mower without a crappy chinese motor ( like Kohler - and have heard Briggs and stratton has gone this route .

I just decided how high i wanted it and just cut the legs off of my Polymax's stand didn't take me 1/2 hour to cut the three legs ( used a square to keep them square )- i popped the inserts out the cut offs and popped them into the stand -easy peasie ( i have another heavy duty stand for a polymax if i ever want to go back to the high stand ) ( But i wont )
-
Yes I've used them quite a bit as well as Olsen and Pegas . some saws like one blade over another -especially my Eclipse saws ( they are so finicky )
-
Id check about wether its a good idea to use corian or not - some materials are not food safe etc. plus you will need a better than average mask - at least a N-95 for your own health - maybe better if you use wood -

New sanding technique - to me anyway!
Puzzleguy replied to new2woodwrk's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Ray i bought this to sand puzzles - but when you have pieces inside of something big , it tends to suck the small pieces out ( unless you put adhesive on the back side -or tape ) it works fine and these big units are pricey -to bad your all the way across the country ( im in NY state ) I paid 800 for it and want something close to that - these are about 2500 or more new . But i dont want to ship this monster - its a pick up sale only - i have the original stand but the previous owner built a solid wood base which makes it more stable - Tony -

Upper and Lower Blade Clamps are not in line (I think) Hegner
Puzzleguy replied to jbrowning's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I feel your pain - I own 3 Hegners , Before i put on the tension i physically move them to the aproximate center by manually moving them to center. All parallel arm saw of this type have a bit of this, even RBI. if your worried about getting this annally close get your hands on a small engineering square ( very tiny ) lay it on the table and against the blade -after a few times youll get it very close . Its also a good idea to get this square anyways -to check your blade and table squareness . P.S when ever i change a blade i put a couple of drops on oil on the upper and lower arm pivot -will extend the life of the saw . Tony Burns -
looking for retailers of Pegas and Olsen blades
Puzzleguy replied to Puzzleguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
i will get ahold of Danny -found his site , but it doesnt list a complete list of blade - So ill call him ( have to decide on my blade purchase for 2022 ) The fellow I use to buy my Olsen blades from was in my bookmark folder but for some reason it got deleted ( had some computer hic-ups- probably software ) Think ive got this covered for now - I appreciate everyone's help - ( thank you one and all ! ) -
looking for sellers for these two brands - use to have a great price on a couple of olsen blades i like - but that seller is off the map - i know of Bearwoods ( for pegas blades ) , but curious what other sellers are out their thanks - Tony

Wondering if your couldnt contact wen for a replacement remote ! i found a wireless on and off box that i run my ceiling unit from -in a discount bin at home depot years ago . my unit didnt come with a remote . My method for the old Box fan and filter is basically the lazy man version - tape it on the front that was my first air filter
-
We knock the old fashion box fan with a filter taped on the front of it, I did that ( my mobile k is simalar to that ) sometimes something that works and cheap is the ticket -by the way sometimes your shop vac can clean them and you don't need to buy a new filter -those 3m performance filters are allot better than your standard dollar furnace filters .
-
I have these two filters besides my Grizzly dust collection system - The mobile k is no longer made , but basically its a box fan with a filter on a roll -looks like a fiberglass filter medium - ive only pulled it up two times - basically theirs like 90 percent of the roll still their [ i clean it with a shop vac every now and then - but my primary filtration is from my N-95 Mask ! ( never a mistake to over do protecting your lungs ! - ) Actually i dont think the total shop is made either - But i saw a smaller simalar unit on amazon

Just got me 220 RBI ( about 8-10 years old )
Puzzleguy replied to Puzzleguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thanks for the help Kevin ( your a great guy ! ) I see where the tag should of been- theirs two holes on the right front side the tag in the back ( for blade list has a '05 copyright symbol ), kind of an odd saw -looks up an upgraded saw -the one trunion in the back has a hole drilled -which they cross sectioned , the base was repainted ( guessing at factory ) I think either a refurb or a return - the tag for the serial number is clean -no rivited serial number was ever on it , but as you say maybe a sticker ( which is gone ) - im tying to figure out its date of manufacture to download the appropriate manual and parts list - I have to work out some vibration problems - guessing legs or some inbalance in the saw - ( i expected it to be vibration free -which will never happen on a parallel armed saw ) Nothing is as smooth as my Eclipse but i bought it used -i expected some problems - maybe a future saw for my son ( whos not a full time scroller ) -

Where is the serial number ? -
seems nice - have to download a manual and parts list yet - it didnt come with that -sorry i dont have a picture yet ( its from the new company that took over RBI ) anyone know of where i can get that ?
-
The polymax is not user friendly , everything you've said about it is true- plus parts can be crazy - Love it , and it is a PITA . What is a Scrollmate ? not familiar with that brand etc- I love Monsters !
