    Glasses.....yes Hearing protection.....when needed and my vacuum is quiet and dust collector outside of my shop. Dust mask.....no. My scroll saw has dust collection above and below the table. I have a very good dust collection system and it minimizes dust.

    Great explanation tgiro. That is exactly how I have done it and with the same sand paper. It is not easy cutting all the strips and you are right about the blades. I used to cut them on a old scroll saw a nd it makes a mess. I will not do it on my Hegner as it gets the grit everywhere.

    I have made my own mops a couple of time. You need to use very good cloth backed sand paper. I tried cheaper stuff and it did not work long. I made several with the Klingspor gold cloth backed and worked well. It takes quite a bit of work to make them. I just buy the refills now. I do not think that you can make the Mac Mop. It works extremely well on more delicate items. Not cheap but I think well worth it.

    I bought a new drill press last year but does not fit your requirements. It is variable speed from 50 - 4000 rpm with a twist of a dial.

    I use Windows Resizer. Go the file folder, select photos, right click and choose Resizer. There are option for how large to make the images. You could select a entire Fowler to resize.

    Before I bought my Festool CT26, I called Festool and asked about turning it on and off. They told me it is made for that and continuous running. I h ave my saw plugged into it so it comes on when I turn the saw on. I also like the fact that it is a HEPA vacuum and not just a HEPA filter... While expensive, it is a solid vacuum that I have been using for a number of years. However, more important than the vacuum is the design of the dust pickups. You need to pick up above and below the table. With all dust collection, collecting at the source is a key. Blowing the dust around is not good at all.

    Oh No....another what saw is better than the others. Some saws are built to last longer and have parts available. While there are some who feel a Hegner is not a Cadillac, that is OK because I have never owned a Cadillac and my Chevy got me everywhere. What saw is best depends on what you are doing. Are you doing fret work, Intarsia or something with very small blades. Are you doing production work to sell stuff. My Hegner was bought used and is + 20 years old. Parts are still available IF I would need them. How many of the others will do that and still have parts.

    Very well done... I miss my Hummers and it will be April til they get back. I usually follow them and Monarchs on a migration map so I know when they will arrive. We typically put out 8 feeders.

    I have a Hegner and think it is great for Intarsia. I do not do fret work. If I did, I would probably not choose the Hegner as it is more difficult to feed a blade.

    As I mentioned, I have the Craftsman chair and love it. I am 6' 3" and 225#. The other part is that I use a cat litter bucket turned upside down to put my feet on. The bucket makes a huge difference in my back comfort.

    I think the first step with bad back problems is to find out what is going on. Trying different therapies like inversion and other things might help and might make it worse. Finding a good doctor is a key. I know that there are some on here that do not believe in doctors but I think it is the best way to start.

    Raccoons are scavenger and carry lots of diseases. They also can bite and scratch and carry rabies. I have something special for raccoons and it has a barrel and lead.

    I started with the scroll saw due to back problems as I could not spend a long time on my feet. My lower back was fused and I have a bunch of deck screws in there. I also have a metal hip and other things. I suffer from chronic back and leg pain. More than a year ago I got an spinal cord stimulator put in and it helps with the pain. Now I am bionic, I have to keep my battery charged. There is typically no one cure for back pain but a bunch of different things. Note: Taking someone else's medication is not a good idea no matter what it is.

    I have had my Makita 18V Lithium batteries for 6-8 years. It is recommended not to let them completely discharge or sit completely discharged. When my batteries start to show a slowdown, I put them on the charger. I do use my drills very often. I have a Milwaukee 12V drill that has a battery charge indicator and when it gets low, it goes on the charger. My son-in-law has the same Makita 18 V batteries and he let his set discharged and they stopped working. A new battery was about $80.

    I think that some of us have quite a bit more experience than you. I would not cut rock or slate on my scroll saw as the particles will damage the moving parts. Secondly, I do not want to breath the dust from rock or antler. The Clockman was giving you good advice in his own way. If you want to cut rocks on your scroll saw feel free to do so. Diamond blades are available, expensive and you need some type of water drip system and vacuum system. Be aware that the saw will be contaminated with rock dust and not good for wood again.

    Judy Peterson has published several books of puzzles including one with dinosaur ones. Her puzzles are a real hit with my grandkids.

    Others are correct....slow down and take your time. Scrolling takes practice and you will get better with time.

    An interesting thread and suggestions. Of course, there are things that could be improved. However, there is a cost for these improvements. What happens when the price of a the scroll saws goes up $100. While I might pay for the improvements, I am afraid that it might put the improved machines out of the reach of quite a few scrollers.

    Of course, this perfect saw needs to be very affordable.

    I would also love to see a longevity test and would like to see the test procedure. Trying to determine an end point will be difficult. To be meaningful you need to measure things accurately. It is so difficult to design an experiment like this keeping all variables constant except one.
