  1. weapons of mass destruction - should be outlawed; I'm calling my sheriff tomorrow. Everyone needs to turn in their letter openers along with their nail clippers! we used to get handwritten thank you notes from grandchildren when they received gifts from us several years ago. Now we get text messages - if we are lucky! I am proposing a national handwritten "send a letter day" - to anyone of your choice. The USPS could promote it as a way to stay connected the REAL way. And it would help with their budget too! And a new stamp design. And teach cursive too. I think it was Jerry who sent the cartoon: How can you write your name when peeing in the snow if you don't know cursive. But I digress. Cheers and Happy New Year to all. bb
  2. Nice to see you here Doc! Would love to see some pics of your toys! bb
  3. Thank you for your nice comments! Last year 3 of us cut puzzles only and they were all gone by Christmas at the Toys for Tots store. At least the parents love giving them to the kids. This year I put on a scroll saw workshop for club members and got 6 of us cut puzzles and toy cars/trucks and doubled our donation. At least two members upgraded and bought a new scroll saw. More club members will be trained in 2019. Yes, we have fun. 40 members total with about 20+ active. We have scrollers, wood turners, furniture makers, and a canoe maker. Our club president currently teaches woodworking at the John Campbell Folk School near Murphy, NC We meet monthly and do shop tours of members, wood supply houses, shops of interest in the area and members conduct workshops/seminars in their specialty. Members are always called on to donate handmade items for neighborhood charities including the volunteer firemen, church lady gala, and garden club; these items are then auctioned off. bb
  4. The Big Canoe (GA) Woodworkers Club donated 200+ wooden puzzles and toys to the Pickens County, GA Toys for Tots program for the 2018 Christmas Season. Attached is a photo taken at our packaging event in late October. Pictured from left to right: Claude Drevet, Brian Beals, Malcolm Halls, Cecil Schneider, Grant Grimes, and Ken Kidd. Tags: None
  5. Has anyone made bowls with a scroll saw? If so, what tools do you use for sanding? And what are your favorite woods? bb
  6. It was a good year because the economy is rockin and rolling and folks have $$ to spend! My show sales were on a par with last year BUT the website sales in Oct - Dec were triple what they were last year. 98% of the website sales were from folks who saw me at craft shows. I've had offers from web designers to fine tune my website but the prices they charge are outrageous. Anywhere from $300-500 per month! bb
  7. I got this idea a couple weeks ago from this board. Instead of sawdust I used shredded colored paper from Michael's Presently I'm giving them away. Might charge a buck at craft shows. bb
  8. Thanks! Looks like I need to learn about Facebook Marketplace. bb
  9. I'm more interested in the trumpet. What kind was it and how did you sell it? I have a 1950's Antoine Courtois trumpet in good shape with original somewhat tattered case. I've seen the same on e-bay for over $1,000. Made in France and sole USA importer was Le Blanc. bb
  10. I filled out the order form and submitted. But there was no request for credit card info. bb
  11. What does every one use for a dust/particulate mask? Or don't you? And when do you wear the mask? cutting, sanding, etc. I normally don't wear one but soon I will teach a class of high school and college age students in the art of scrolling and need to ultra safe. I try to collect dust at the source as I have an Oneida filter system throughout the shop. The only time I wear a mask is when I am spraying lacquer and then I use a 3M brand mask with a carbon/organic canister. Help on the dust mask would be appreciated. Thanks, bb

    kmmcrafts,

love your sawdust and block ideas. How much do you sell them for?

    bb

LOL, I don't actually sell them.. just a brainstorm idea I had when I seen that posting topic.. really one could sell just about anything.. with some imagination and correct marketing strategy.. LOL.. might be careful of the sawdust one... some sue happy idiot might claim the dust gave them lung cancer or something LOL.. after all we run dust collection and whatnot for a reason... Maybe coarse sawdust but not the stuff from our scroll saws..

you're right about the sawdust! I was at Michael's yesterday and they were selling shredded paper - all colors. Just like the stuff that comes out of my paper shredder. that might be a safer idea re "the most difficult puzzle". Anyway, thanks for the idea. I may run with it somehow. bb

  13. My Hegner may have been damaged in shipping. The table is split into 2 parts by design for blade insert. The left and right of the table are not aligned properly. Discovered too late to send back. I will Never, ever buy a saw that has to be shipped via UPS or fedEx to my home. Already had to send one Hawk back because of vibration. Shipping issue? who knows. bb
  14. I have a Hegner, Hawk, and Delta. The Hegner and Hawk sit in the corner gathering dust. Blade breakage has been a real problem with the hegner. bb
  15. Been running my Delta scroll saw for 6 months now and no problems. When my DeWalt died, I replaced it with the Delta. 5 yr warranty! vs DeWalt's 1 yr. I checked Delta service centers and there is one 15 miles away. Just go to the Delta site and enter your zip to find service centers. bb
  16. Look at the Delta for less $$. My DeWalt 788 died 6 months ago and I bought a Delta from Home Depot. 5 year warranty. So far so good! bb
  17. You know what I'd tell NYS? Well I can't print it here! Tell your housekeeper to forget about it. However, the housekeeper better not set foot in NYS or they could arrest her. What a lovely state! bb
  18. Travis, I could possibly create one or two original puzzle ornament patterns but probably would not have the time to create 5. I'm attaching pics of the ones I sell at craft fairs. The patterns were given to me by several friends and I have no idea whatsoever if they are copyrighted. That's why they do not appear on my website.
  19. Iggy, I gave a couple of worn out DeWalt's to a guy in the Gwinnett Woodworkers Club. They know how to repair them. I don't think they would travel to the NC beach however. You might want to consider a Delta for your next saw. I bought one and love it. It has a locking mechanism on the arm which is handy when inserting a blade up through a pilot hole. The Delta also has a 5 year warranty. Bought mine online from Home Depot and had it shipped to my local HD store. One thing however: the Delta does not fit on the DeWalt stand. But it is an easy fix to modify the stand. bb
  20. My puzzle competitor, Hans Meier, does this all the time at craft shows. http://www.hanspuzzles.com/ check out his website and call him for details. bb
  21. For those who use the Duck brand shelf paper here is some advice: Don't wait to remove it from the wood! I left some on the wood for over a month and it was very difficult to remove. It even lifted up some wood fibers! From now on I will always cut and remove the same day! bb
  22. Look at Delta. 5 year warranty. Free shipping to Home Depot. I bought one after my DeWalt died several months ago. So far so good. bb
  23. Are you telling me that there was indeed an empty space where I was originally assigned? And you asked to be placed there! bb
  24. Iggy, Nice looking set-up. Glad you had fun and made some dough. Was thinking of you this weekend. bb
  25. Good choice. I did the same 3 months ago! bb
