  1. Different story here. Bought one. The lens is different from my two other magnifying lights and I don't like it. bb
  2. I think we need a "PUZZLE" topic on this forum! Whatya think Travis? bb
  3. I love your puzzle! Bought the pattern from Judy months ago but haven't tried it. great job!!!! bb
  4. For my colored puzzles I use soft maple and dip the pieces in food dyes; then apply a non toxic sealer (Sherwin Williams CabAcrylic). Normally I will use a #3 or #5 Pegas Modified Geometry blade on cherry or walnut, etc. But when I dip and coat soft maple, I always use a #7 blade for the extra kerf width. #5 will work but it's a tight fit. #7 is better. bb
  5. Excellent! Is it a puzzle box by any chance? bb
  6. Recently bought some very nice 4/4 soft maple for puzzles. Cut a few puzzles today and was astonished! The 4/4 turns out to be 2ply "plywood"! I can still use it but was amazed that it was 2 pieces of soft maple glued together to make it 4/4 thickness! I saw this many years ago with walnut and cherry and thought it was an anomaly. Perhaps it is common practice in the wood industry now. Has anyone else seen this? bbNext
  7. There is a German scroll saw magazine called Feinscnitt. I subscribed several years ago but did not renew because there was a paucity of puzzles. Otherwise it is an excellent publication. One of the issues I received even included some blades. I ordered online - it takes a while because the subscription page is in German. And the magazine is totally in German. Brian
  8. Yes to 3M 77 top coat with a clear glaze before cutting. Krylon makes one. Someone makes a triple thick glaze (Carter used triple). No need to seal again after cutting. bb
  9. Don't miss it! The Puzzle Parley will be held in Rochester, NY July 12-15, 2018. I was planning on attending but recently got accepted into the Berea, KY craft show the same weekend. Judy Peterson will be attending. Us puzzlers know her from her many puzzle designs in Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts magazine. Fox Chapel Publishing has also published several puzzle pattern books she authored. I am told she will be giving a presentation on How to Design a Jigsaw Puzzle if You are NOT an Artist! Here is a link to register for the Puzzle Parley: http://www.puzzleparley.org/registration2018a.html Be there or be square Brian .
  10. The shelf paper came off ok but it took a little extra effort after 4 days. bb
  11. I've seen the same thing! left some packaging tape on a board for a month and then tried to remove. Impossible without mineral spirits and a lot of sanding. bb
  12. Yes, I will do that on puzzles that I do not color with food colors. I switched to shelf paper for the colored puzzles because the shelf paper does not leave a residue on the wood like repositionable adhesive does. The adhesive is difficult to remove and causes blotching with the food colors. bb
  13. Rockler has the DeWalt 788 with stand for $499. Received the alert this AM from Rockler. I know you can buy it cheaper from Grizzly but I will never buy another saw that has to be shipped via UPS or FEDEX. Did that with a Hegner and Hawk and the results were miserable. bb
  14. Don't wait to remove that Duck brand shelf paper from puzzle pieces! I waited 4 days and it was very difficult to remove. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to apply packaging tape in addition to the shelf paper for extended blade life? Comments? justdraftn posted earlier: (The release agent is) polyvinyl carbamate If you need a chemistry lesson, google that. The Release Agent The release agent is made of a complex combination of compounds of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. It is the most complicated part of the tape as if it is too oily it won't stay as a tape roll and if it's too sticky, you won't be able to use the roll. https://www.mayzo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/PSTC-Release-Coat-Paper.pdf Now, I wonder what the state of CA thinks about that compound? And when they will require warning statements on tape and shelf paper! bb
  15. It could be walnut. I bought some wood pitched as walnut and it looks like your specimen. I doubted it was walnut and thought perhaps it was oak. Then a woodworker more knowledgeable that I told me walnut can be very light in color and show hues of green, pink, red, etc IF it has been air dried and not kiln dried. He said kiln dried walnut is darker and more uniform in color. So you and I may have walnut indeed. Then again it may be oak or other hardwood. Only da shadow know! Is there a DNA test for wood? bb
  16. I would be interested to know who started the packaging tape thingy as a blade lubricant. Been doing that for 10+ years now. I think it was Mike M. of Flying Dutchman fame that discovered it was not the tape itself that was the lubricant but the lubricant that was appied to the tape to prevent sticking to itself. Correct me if I am wrong. Duck tape adhesive shelving paper works the same way. bb
  17. I agree! bb
  18. Wow, a double booth to boot! Your Ocean Springs, MS friend surely is aware of the November show there. We did that show a couple years ago and tons of folks showed up! They better get busy now! bb
  19. I use Watco Danish Oil. I do NOT dip as it leaves too much oil on the puzzle pieces and wastes a lot of oil. Instead, I use a glue brush to apply the oil to about 20 pieces, then wipe the excess off and let dry for 2 days before packaging.
  20. I hate to be a curmudgeon but the trophies are more irritating than useful. Just received 4 and I have no clue why; topics are unknown to me. bb
  21. I don't understand this trophy business!
  22. I'm in the same situation. I have a couple gross of Flying Dutchman blades which are inferior to the Pegas blades for my purposes. bb
  23. What took so long to try Pegas blades? Many on the board have hyped the blade for some time. It is my go to blade for 3/4" hardwoods. bb
  24. I showed the "joy" sign to my wife and told her I could modify it and insert "booth" instead of office. She nixed it! I love it!!!!!! bb
  25. Yes, REALLY food colors. It has taken me 10 years to perfect the process and the final piece fell in place a month ago with the use of Duke brand peel & stick shelf paper from Walmart. Prior to the shelf paper discovery (someone on this board recommended it), I was getting blotching if I couldn't remove all the temporary adhesive from the pattern on the wood. If you go to my website you will see more colored puzzles - all with food colors. www.pickenspuzzles.com
