  1. My first scroll saw project was the same as Don's except that I did mine eleven years ago: Also, like Don, I have been woodworking forever.
  2. My grandson Ethan (16) and I will setting out on Friday to Pellow's Island for a two week holiday. While we are at the island, we will be doing LOTS of fishing. I made this item: to surprise Ethan once we get to our cabin. The pattern is by Steve Good. I printed the pattern at 130% then cut it using 6mm thick Baltic birch plywood with (mostly) a Flying Dutchman reverse tooth #1 blade. Then, I stained parts of it using Saman water based stain. Before staining, I carved a small barrier between stained and unstained regions: After staining, the whole thing received two coats of clear gloss rattle can urethane.

    Excalibur EX-30

I'm happy to say that I acquired my EX30 saw when it was still made in Canada by Somerville Industries. Now that General has shipped manufacture out of Canada, I doubt that the saws for sale now are as good as mine.
  4. Thanks Marg. I can confirm that the bookmarks were very well received (and the folks that I gave them to were somewhat mystified as too how I was able to make them).
  5. Thanks Don. They are laminated from very thin (less than 1 millimetre thick) veneer that I purchased. The photos that follow show how I made these things: First I cut out 16 rectangles of the same size using a guillotine of the type that is used to cut paper: Cutting a single thickness of this material proved to be next to impossible, but a bundle of 8 wrapped with masking tape worked out well: Here are the 16 pieces of Fir veneer after the logos have been cut into 8 of them: I used one of the cut pieces as a template when painting the 8 background pieces with acrylic paint: After gluing the 8 foreground pieces to the 8 background pieces, I then bundled them together again with masking tape before rounding the corners with my scroll saw: Some light hand sanding followed by spraying with semi-gloss "rattle can" varnish completed the job.
  6. My wife, Margaret, and I will be leaving this afternoon for a visit to Finland and Norway. In Finland, we will be visiting a (3 generation) family of 7 people that we have known for many years. I designed and made a few bookmarks out of fir veneer to give them as a memento. The books are very thin (1.3 millimetres thick).
  7. I've now finished the remaining 5 pieces of this limited edition and will be driving to Hearst in the next few days to deliver them (among other things). By the way, there is still a lot of ice on Lake Pivabiska so I am not sure that I will be able to make it to Pellow's Island on this visit. This picture was taken this morning:
  8. You think that is fast. Mine from Mike arrived just as I started to realize that I needed some.
  9. When I sent a photo of the board with a drawer to Steve Good, he suggested that I add a cover. So I did: A cover is exactly what was needed. I made one out of Baltic birch plywood remnants, attached it with 3 draw latches and installed a wooden handle on the top.. It is quite heavy, but easy to transport. I hope that this project is finally complete.
  10. WOW! Your video makes it look so easy even though I know that it isn't.
  11. A long time ago, I made something along these lines for my table saw. It was king of scary to use that jig and I don't have it anymore. You have reminded me of it and I think a jig like yours for my small bandsaw would be much safer. I think I will make one, THANKS!
  12. I have had a Festool Rotex I50 for the last 16 years and I LOVE it. Why, you ask: The sander costs a LOT but lasts FOREVER, The sandpaper also costs a LOT but lasts a long time, Very little vibration, Variable speed, Two modes -one for aggressive material removal -one for fine sanding, The dust collection is so good that my wife has let me use the sander in our living room.
  13. Lots more emojis! But, I want one to use when I am embarrassed (frequently) and that does not appear to be in the set.
  14. I was about to ask the same question. They do still appear if you look at someone's profile under the 'Achievements' tab.
  15. You are right, that would make it complete. I had not thought of a handle in/on the cover. Thanks for the suggestion.
  16. The drawer was not in Steve's design, although he tells me that he is now thinking of adding one to his board. We are both thinking of adding a cover.
  17. I added a drawer (out of Baltic birch plywood) under the board. I used 14" self closing slides from Lee Valley (02K5235) and this insures that the drawer will stay closed when the board is moved. I've attached a couple of pictures.
  18. Thanks Dick, but remember that the ingenuity in this case is Steve Good's, not mine. Having said that, I have that opposite problem to yours in that I am always coming up with new ways to do things and new projects and can only find time to do a very few of them.
  19. That (or Tremclad) is what I use too. Rustoleum also sells a primer/sealer spray and the very few times I cut and painted MDFI sprayed it first with this.
  20. It's taken me a long elapsed time to complete cutting and painting all the pieces, but I finally managed to find the time. Here is a photo: Next I need to work on a drawer under the board to hold the pieces. This was not in Steve's plans
  21. That's exactly what I do 9in tight corners.
  22. I use Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse and, like Roly, I have never noticed any cutback. Also, like him, I always hold my work tight.
  23. It was the green that particularly impressed me. I've been on the outlook for poplar that green for some time and have never found it.
  24. There appear to be duplicate threads for this, therefore I will duplicate my entry in the other thread here. That looks like something my wife would love. So, I will keep in in mind for a future project. Is that all natural colours, or did you use some dye?
