  1. That Poplar is a great find! I'm always on the lookout for odd colours in wood "standard" wood species. My best finds have been in Poplar and in Western Red Cedar.
  2. I like both designs, but I really like the guitars!
  3. I confess, that I have also tried to saw with an upside down spiral blade. In fact, I worked with spiral blades for couple of days before realized that they, like regular blades, even had an up and a down.
  4. Well, today I managed two 1 hour sessions using my saw and made good progress on the ornaments. Tomorrow, I will shoot for 3 hours and, in that time, I should manage to finish them.
  5. OK John, you have convinced me with your wonderful creations that MDF is not 'evil'. It has now moved up in my scale all the way to 'nasty and avoid if possible' .
  6. Thanks for the tips folks. I am taking it easy but doing all the recommended exercises. Scroll sawing for short periods is one thing that has been suggested.
  7. I just gave it a try for about 15 minutes and was quite comfortable sitting on my raised stool at my raised saw. Now, I can get back to the many Xmas ornaments that are in the pipeline: All of these are from patterns by Steve Good. I have some Sue May designs in the wing, once these have been completed. I think that, tomorrow, I will try to saw for a couple of hours.
  8. I would like to thank everyone who contributed and will attempt to cut at least one of each of your patterns, donate the resulting ornaments, and (of course) make a financial donation as well.
  9. Perfect!
  10. These items which involve a little bit of intarsia were designed by Steve Good. They can be ordered with personalized names at his web site for the great value of $2 per pattern. I made a dog ornament for one of my daughters and a cat ornament for the other. The dark wood is 7mm thick Walnut and the light wood is 5mm thick Avodire. After assembly, I sprayed them with two coats of rattle can clear gloss urethane.
  11. You did a great job on those Don, particularly on the lacrosse sticks. Now, this has me thinking of a design along the same lines for my daughter Kathleen who has supported my granddaughter Isla's synchronized swimming and followed (or led?) Isla all over North America.
  12. I thank everyone who has contributed to my knowledge in this thread. My biggest take-away is that I would be wise to stick to what I know and the masking tapes that I know and trust for various jobs are: 3M tan, 3M green, and 3M blue.
  13. You did a good job on that!
  14. I like it! Margaret and I lived in greater Seattle for almost 7 years at the end of my working career and that part of the design brings back many happy memories.
  15. That would eliminate most new small bandsaws. My Rikon 10" saw is made in China.
  16. I agree with Larry. My two bandsaws (a 10 inch Rikon and an (approximately) 16 inch ACM ) do completely different jobs. I would hate to have force a 14 inch saw (with or without riser blocks) to do either job. It would definitely be a compromise and it would not do either job as well and I would always be changing blades and set-up.
  17. I'm another one who uses the Rikon 10" saw and find it cuts well. But, I don't like either the fence or the miter gauge that came with the saw and would pay for quality replacements if I could find them.. For re-sawing, I have 400mm (about 16 inch) ACM (an Italian brand) saw and it is high quality all the way. But, it costs a LOT.
  18. I use stain on some part of most my projects and the satin of choice is Saman water based stain. One good feature of Saman is that it does not raise the wood. Sometimes, I also use paint, either acrylic which I brush on or "rattle can" spray paint. If brushing on acrylic, I usually treat the wood with either shellac or stain first. I always paint before gluing the foreground to the backer board.
  19. I like her. I'm attaching a photo of a girl snowperson that I designed and made for my granddaughter about 10 years ago:
  20. About fear to try intarsia, I guess it must be the fear of the unknown and/or the fear of screwing up. I, on the other hand, love learning about the unknown and, since I know that I am likely going to make mistakes of some sort on every project, even when I have experience, it is kind of a relief to blame those mistakes on inexperience.
  21. This was designed by Kory Kiker. Detailed notes and photos about this project can be found in the thread:
  22. Hey, this is the first time that I know of that someone has used one of my patterns. Thanks! I think that you did a great job with it, very different than what I did.
  23. That's not just some, it's a LOT. Well done!
  24. Thanks Don. I don't have time to pursue this right now but will somewhere down the road.
