  1. Hi Randi. Several girls here in the village so you won't be the only like you were in shop class. Welcome to the village from East Tennessee. I'm a relative newbie to the saw myself. I got started wanting to do Intarsia work which requires a lot of different woods, colors of woods, etc. Then I found the village and have ventured off into some other aspects of scroll sawing as well. You mentioned you got some spare blades, you will want to learn that different types of woods, different thicknesses, different projects will require different blade thicknesses as well so make sure to read up on all that good info shared here too. As far as wood, as already noted - its going to depend on what you want to do. If you want to try signs first, then you might look for some pine, oak, luan, or baltic burch plywood at your local Lowes and HD. You might also google around and see if you can find some lumberyards not too far away. If you are close to Bill and the Blazin Blades SS club he mentions above, I would highly suggest that you look into it. I found working in person with those who scroll helped my skills alot. Good luck and let us know how we can help. We love to see pictures too!
  2. Welcome from across the Pond. I am in the hills of East Tennessee. Look forward to seeing you here and seeng your work. Some nice looking projects there you have made. Thanks for sharing.
  3. Glad you had a Whiz SIL to help you out. Also glad it was only "minor" things and didn't ruin the whole computer. Terrible storms with hail came through here last night. Did you all get those to in your area? Fortunately, we missed the hail at my house. Glad you and Don (hawkeye10) are back and chatting with us all.
  4. Welcome back. Glad you got your new DW788 working like you want it. I have been intrigued with the Bandsaw boxes that I have seen so be sure to show us pics when you are done. Hubby had a small piece of of Padauk that was in a "grab bag" he got. He turned a nice wine stopper with it. I really like that color but since have seen where you and others have shared about how it stains other woods so at least I know to be careful with it should we get more. Look forward to seeing your chess set as well. Sounds like you are getting a lot done in the shop after work! Keep it up!
  5. Thanks for sharing that info. I was thinking it would be nice to have something like that with the added scanner. Will check it out.
  6. Just wanted to update - Hubby's although looks like OP is going a different direction. Hubby got his flip top tool stand done. The plans for the one he used came from Woodsmith Magazine's Shop Cabinets and Tool Stands Book in a series of Custom Woodworking books printed by Time Life. I think it is a compilation of articles from the Magazine. I haven't gotten pictures yet of his. However, I thought surely there must be some links somewhere to similar types of plans so I did a little googling around and found a few. I thought I would add links to them here for those who might be interested in doing one. http://www.instructables.com/id/COPYRIGHT-FREE-RE-LISTED-FLIPTOP-TOOL-STAND/step7/1-Inch-Dowel-Pivot-Point-Assembly/#intro http://fixthisbuildthat.com/diy-flip-top-tool-stand-plans/ http://sawsonskates.com/2016/01/13/how-to-2x4-flip-top-workbench-cart-free-diy-plans/ I had also previously found the carousel plans but he decided not to do one of those right now. Look forward to seeing how your's works out.
