  1. man alive that is gorgeous! excellent cutting Dick! I have a cousin in the us navy and I am thinking I should cut this for his mom and dad
  2. the angel is neat IMO but your job on neptunes awesome pattern is nothing short of perfection, crisp and clean cutting for sure. I too have the owl on my to do list but as I do with 99% of my pieces I use 1/2 or 3/4 inch wood so it will be a tedious one for me!
  3. Brian you did a fabulous job. I must try my hand at these cuddly looking bears! Love that!
  4. thanks Bob, I am working on a few more combs this time I a using Masaranduba, very hard wood.and nice color.
  5. fabulous work for your first effort. You are well on your way to being an addicted scroller...I look forward to seeing more of your obvious skill.
  6. spectcular Crupiea. your work is a real treat to see. how much time do you have into that piece? just curious thanks
  7. spectacular cutting jim, I would also suggest staying with black, other colors would not be seen through some of the tiny holes. stunning project for sure!
  8. thanks Rocky! they are really fun to make and great to use! Great satisfaction when someone states that they find themselves combing their hair more often then they should just cause it makes their scalp feel much better
  9. I know what you are referring to. I have also made pics as well
  10. Cut from Japanese cherry blossom repurposed flooring EDIT: meant this to be in the works in progress section! Sorry mods go ahead and move should you wish!
  11. thanks, yes the wood is a really nice color and the terrified process makes it smell really nice also.
  12. that is one way to describe it. what I have learned and how I have learned to explain it is that all the moisture is sucked out of the wood, kind of like a kiln on steroids and then the moisture level is increased to desired level. Torrefied Wood The technology consists of heating the wood at a very high temperature (from 190 C to 240 C), in a torrefaction kiln (autoclave) at controlled atmosphere and low in oxygen. The length of the process, as well as the temperature degree sustained during a determined period, depends on the species and the desired color. This technology requires a pre-drying process using conventional kiln driers, to lower the moisture level between 6% and 10%. After that, the torrefaction kiln lowers the moisture level to 0%. Finally, the wood is placed in a conditioning chamber where the temperature is gradually lowered by controlled steam injection. The moisture level of the product is increased between 3% and 6%, in order to give back to the wood its natural flexibility. This conditioning stabilizes the wood and allows better quality manufacturing.
  13. nothing done to the terrified maple except cut and sanded to 2000 grit I buy torrified maple from Lee Valley, they get cut offs from the folks that make the handles for Veritas plaines. When I see they have it in the clearance section I usually bye the lot of them....I don't think you can buy terrified lumber in a retail store.
  14. reccomendtion is to have the grain going in the opposite direction, however depending on the wood it can be strong enough, heck even the first comb I made from oak is still fine. The tines don't snap off easily at all with the correct wood and thickness of the tine.
  15. Made about 24 combs now and I have found the wood I like best. I have tried oak, bulletwood, ipe, cherry and regular maple. Torrified maple is by far the best choice.
  16. Been thinking for a long time I should get an air brush, already have a compressor so it not much of an investment. I was looking at a pretty nice air brush today at KMS tools for 47$ only. add another 10-15 for extra little containers so its quick to swap between colors and voila! Just not sure I would have much of a skill as it relates to that....buddy of mine when we were younger is phenominal with it, he thinks I will develop some skill. I would be buying it primarily for painting frames and backboards and some of the scroll pieces although I would not want to fully paint pieces as I like seeing the wood. So anyone out in SSV using an airbrush? perhaps Crupeia? sp?
  17. thanks, I chose ash for that reason exactly!
  18. thanks folks, the honduran mahogany butter knife gets hung on the side of the fridge right next to the cupboard with the butter dish, next step will be to make a matching butter dish and have the knife mounted to the lid

    Yoda

Nice cutting, I have also cut this pattern, Yoda is such a cool character!
  20. neptune has a similar pattern in the library but it is different.
  21. Butter knives, the pine knive was a gift from a family member who got it in Finland. I knew I could take that up a notch or two, I made two out of two different types of mahogany and finished them with salad bowl finish so they are food safe compliant. They work great! Thanks deb! I will make sure you get one
  22. Cut from reclaimed birch flooring mounted on Asian acacia engineered flooring sample framed with cherry from an entertainment unit
  23. thanks folks!
  24. ha ha, ya right, no painting tutorial needed paint the frame one color and take another color(s) dip an item like a screw, thin piece of wood, dowel, pipe cleaner etc it into paint and whip it in a downward motion at the 4 pieces prior to them being assembled and attached to the piece. my fav and my sons fav was a toronto blue jays piece I made him. if you want painting tutorials you need to hit up Crupiea, that is painting at its best.... I can barely splatter paint and trust me I have tried painting, not my skill set clearly...
  25. Changed the title to lioness. Thanks scrapile. I saw this as a jpeg of a wall decal I believe it was
