GREAT JOB .. I am wanting to try one of those multi layer things !!!! I'll get my courage up ... After seeing yours !!! It's great !!!! I'm with you on the edges, though. I hardly ever make anything out of any plywood because of that. I'm very fortunate to get that Walnut that I get - but - it's limited in its sizes. They are burl - and - the have knots and cracks and stuff. BUT - they are about 6 inches thick - and - some are about 10 inches high. Very odd shaped. But for 15 bucks - I can get a lot of 1/2" and 1/4" and 3/4" stuff out of them. With all the help I'm getting from people on this site - I'd be glad to mail some to people. Man .. I'm gonna make me some 3/8" or 1/4" stuff and try one of these in that walnut. I'll have to go get another piece of it .. bigger ... hahahhaha

Glide .. ONE OF THE BEST BIKES I HAVE EVER OWNED .. that bike was SOOOOOO freaken nimble on corners .. I was constantly loosing my "gremlin bells" .. but .. others would get me one pretty fast. My pegs were just "burger" on the bottoms and ends. Best bike HD EVER made, in my opinion ! Mine was pretty much like yours - without the studs on the leather - and tassles like on your fatboy hanging from the bars. Put a nice paint job on the tank - well - not nice - but sort of like a cops. Black but with the big white tear drop on the sides. Only thing I NEVER liked about the fatboy? Those wheels - they made handling HORRIBLE in wind - and here in northern California - we have lots of wind in places. NICE BIKES.

It is ABSOLUTELY not for wimps. hahahaha .. After my second surgery (there were 5 from Jul 18 to Oct 19) .. The doctor calls and asks "how ya doin' ?" .. I says - "Man - I have been in LOTS of fights - but - no one has ever hit me in the chest like this! I'm not feeling really great." ... He laughs and says - "you're not supposed to feel great right now - we just beat the crap out of your heart !" ... hahahahahaha .. so .. strokey thing - heart and lung thingie - and the wife, father-in-law and I decided - yep - time to let someone else enjoy that bike. I was going to give it to my grand son - but - was talked out of that, too. I do miss her. A little of the fun of putting 20-25K miles on it a year was coming out of some store/restaurant and seeing people gawking at it. And then hearing funny stories about their last bike. .... . Now .. I'm the one with stories about his last bike. Remember - old bikers NEVER die - they just smell that way. Keep the rubber side down, sir, and get healthy !

I made a couple of these out of burl walnut and maple backing - all 3/4" .. A friend of mine took them from the guy I gave them to for his birthday - then - she asked "How many of these can Gus pump out in a week?" I replied "1 or 2 - I'm not doing anything as a business. I'm retired. If I have to work at it - aaaargh - WORK? That's a 4 letter word. Ain't doin' it." hahahahahaha .. I should show her this picture or two .. and tell her .. about that many in a couple days. ahhahahahaa .. but I ain't doin' it. ahhahahaha Still I think it's a GOOD JOB DONE RIGHT !!!! Way to go.

Do you use both straight and spiral blades?
GusGustin replied to FrankEV's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thanks .. well .. that answers that question .. are they the same exact thing? I've not been buying FD because I thought they were two different brands. This is GREAT news if they are exactly the same quality and all. -
Frank - I had TWO full dress HD's .. and a Dyna Wide Glide for fun. Then .. someone hit me with a car. Broke some stuff up. All that good stuff. Dyna went to HD Heaven. I rode one of my HD's into the Honda/Kawisaki dealer with a friend one day - he was looking for another kawi. Some bike with his girl came in - neither had teeth - and yells "hey - who's 30k HD is that outside?" I jokingly said .. "Mine - I'm looking for a good trade in." We had a laugh. The owner of the shop, whom I knew - I'd bought plenty of honda's from him for my kids and stuff, comes out and says "Gus - you wanna trade it in?" I was trying to ride it, but, my back couldn't take the thumping anymore. Hurt to ride. So I says - Bob - yeah - I'll take that one, and, that one, and whatever Vulcan my buddy wants. He takes me over and shows me this Valkyrie with a limited paint job and says - "I'll give ya this - $15k - and all the chrome and exhaust you want" I told him the bike was ugly - and - that it was not made for a 6'3" guy. My size 13's don't fit the pedals. But - I then told him to throw in 100 bucks extra on top of it for dinner at the local steak place, he did - and I got the bike. Next - I didn't like the small tank - or the paint job. So - a friend of my (H.A.) was "retiring" from a famous paint shop - and - said he would paint it for little of nothing when he did to help him start a new business. Okay. So - I designed the paint job. It took first place in a lot of MC shows with that paint and chrome - though - it also got voted DIRTIEST bike in the show. hahahahaha. It was a rider, not a show bike, to me. I put more than 25k miles on it a year and just sold it 2 years ago. With the COP discount - HD gives cops and now firemen special deals - 15k was a bit more than I paid for the HD in the first place - and - the twin to it - I sold to a fire capt in Green Bay Wisconsin for more than I paid for it. At the time - Firemen did NOT get the HD discount. Loved the bike - did a lot of custom work on it to make it faster. It had 135hp to the back wheel on the dyno. Man - 6 carburetors - it was a monster. I sold it - for less than I was asking - to a guy that had just come home from Afghanistan. Ya gotta give those guys some breaks. Have fun on that HOG .. and .. don't spend all day on the saw when there's pavement out there that could use some extra rubber on it.

Do you use both straight and spiral blades?

I know .. I'm so new .. I also get that nervous thing going .. OH NOT .. IT TAKES A DIFFERENT BLADE HERE .. But - I just did that Batman (Bob) and Robin (Mase) thing - it's up on the bragging forum, too .. and I tried the 2/0 Pegas spiral - WOW - didn't like that at all .. so back to the 2/0 MGT Pegas .. not a fan - breaks way too easy .. gets dull way too fast (but - that can be a godsend, sometimes hahahaa) .. and went back to my 2/0 Niqua. Love that one. Indestructible compared to the Pegas. And even used a few of my Flying Dutchmen 2/0's - but - they are not reverse tooth. I finished off with my 3/0 Niqua spiral - now - that one made a way smaller diameter cutting path than the 2/0 Pegas spiral - but - those spirals - what a different technique you have to use for those. They cut way different than the non-spiral blades. That NIQUA #3 - holy cow - I used one on about 5 or 6 really small things that I do - and that is in OAK, MAPLE, WALNUT and flooring scraps. I'm still on the same blade. I'm getting ready to order some more of the Niqua's .. give 'em a try next time you order ... Well .. getting that SHELBY drawn up now - gonna attempt my first clock. aaaaargh ... put me some pics up of the puzzles - maybe I'll get brave and do a few of those. Oh .. and beginner to beginner - I have found a GREAT source for free wood to play with. Someone was giving away a solid MAPLE headboard, footboard for a bed. Man .. that makes great wood to cut on. And - some of them are so thick - you have to cut them in half to get it down to 5/8 or 1/2 inch thicknesses. They only take a few minutes to disassemble - and - then I use the legs and spindles (if it's a 4 poster) to practice on my lathe with. Love free wood. -
Well .. you know what they say .. Happy wife .. no? Well .. ya can't bury them in the desert, anymore .. so .. HAPPY WIFE .. hahahahahaha

Okay .. that makes sense .. I love the Niqua's .. was going to try the NON-MG Pegas .. see if they are a little bit sturdier .. -
I like the bottom one also - I think my grand daughter would love this one .. where did you get the pattern ?
-
I like'em .. Bottom one is my favorite !!!
-
Thanks ! Yeah .. the "thought bubbles" .. I tried cutting this on one type of ply - first thing I did was to cut out the "thoughts" as I thought those would be the toughest to do. But - in doing Mase's eyes .. one of them BLEW out .. so my wife had the idea - cut out the thoughts - and - glue them on top when you're ready to make it look like they are standing out. Sort of layered or 3d. Great IDEA !!! I don't want to cut those out again. So - I switched to a 5 layer BB ply and went at it again. I'm thinking about making the backer board into layers - and - putting a CITY SCAPE being "Bob" and "Mase" ..
-
He is Robin - but - he looks a lot like BOTH of my grandson's .. I changed it just a bit in the face, but, it's the same as when the pattern was given to me. If you message me or email me - I can send you the pattern. It needs cleaned up a bit. I did before I cut it - but - once I started cutting there was a LOT of "field changes" hahahaha. I could clean it up a bit for for you, if you want. Or .. you could. My email is bykergus @ gmail . com I didn't see anywhere on here that says I cannot put an email address on here. I don't think.

Do you use both straight and spiral blades?
GusGustin replied to FrankEV's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I just used (tried to use) a spiral blade for the first time. The cut was so much wider, I was using a 2/0 blade, which I use most of the time. I also use Reverse blades mostly. Only have a few 2/0's that are not reverse, so, I didn't like the "roughness" of the spiral blades cut. Are there Spirals out there that have a reverse tooth pattern on them ? I finally went from the Pegas 2/0 spiral to the Niqua 3/0 and got a thinner kerf(?) but it WAS surely different handling than cutting with a flat blade. I'm glad I read this - as - I thought it was just my inexperience. Is anyone else experiencing the pegas 2/0 (modified geometry) blades being extremely .. hmmmm .. dainty. They seem to break VERY easily. -
I thought ... I might want to post what it MIGHT look like - BEFORE - my 8 year old grandson paints it and the backer board. He is very interested in helping. I let him cut some stuff on my RBI HAWK while I worked on the Pegas on this. He and his sister. So .. this is what it looks like BEFORE the finishing .. I'll post it up how they did on .. that .. when it's done. hahahahha .. ya gotta get 'em interested in it before they get too old to get interested in anything, right ? I may have to buy another scroll saw. hahhahahaa. So they don't argue over who gets to use the one I'm not using at the time.
