  1. So sugi ban will yield some interesting , sometimes unexpectedly dramatic results. I like to use it on heavily grained lumber like fir. Wire bush it, then dye it, usually blue, red or, green.
  2. I'm just now learning or, trying to learn the ins and outs of my gifted De Walt 788. But, I'm intrigued with Catol Rothman's bowls and boxes. I don't think fret work will be in my future. Though, intarsia looks interesting. And, puzzles, too. I like to build functional and/or manipulable stuff, best. Combining scrolled work with power carving seems a good avenue to venture down, too. Possibly some marquetry as well.
  3. Remove all warning labels and let nature weed out the idiots. Have your lawyer's number on speed dial, though.
  4. I like Flexner's quote on finishes. Not verbatim...just how I remember it. "Half of what you hear about finishes is good info. And,the other half is B.S. The trick is knowing which half to believe."
  5. Thanks, Scott. It's as I surmised. Off it comes!
  6. Do you folks use the hold down or is it just in the way?
  7. My first experience with scrolling was several years ago with a little Delta saw. I adhered photos to Lexan and cut the human subjects away from the background. Then glued stands to the backs. Rather ugly. At the time, I was making cabinets in the Arts and craft style from QSWO for our new place and cut several Ginko leaves as decoration. After that, I never got back to scrolling and, eventually sold the saw. Now that I've been gifted a nice, hardly used, DeWalt 788, I'm anxious to get back to scrolling. Joining this group and subscribing to Steve Good's news letter, has certainly kept me interested in jumping back in again. I've recently been occupied with several resin coated Mesquite slab tables. Now that they're done and delivered, I can devote the time to re learning scrolling. Not that I'd ever mastered it, before.
  8. Outstanding!
  9. I'll bet she's bullish on the gift.
  10. Mighty fine work, indeed!
  11. Haven't seen a woodworking trade show in AZ since, IIRC, the early 80s.
  12. You can say that but, I don't believe you! Your sparing use of color and their delicate and precise application, belies your claim! X 2.
  13. If you want a true, ebony like black, India ink is the ticket. Cheap and, easy. But not found on a street corner.
  14. Outstanding!
  15. Very nice. Cooperative crafters' creations are great to see.
  16. Nice cutting. Love symmetry.
  17. The pictures and the scrolling look great from down here in Marana, Dick.
  18. A bang up job!
  19. Nice job. A testament to the truth of the saying that "there's no such thing as scrap wood".
  20. The first three are fantastic. The last two are even more so.
  21. Sweet! A honey of a project!
  22. Both are excellent examples of your skill. My favorite is the darker one. It has an appealing leather look to it.
  23. Can't do hybrid stuff on my scroll saw. It's totally electric.
  24. I've used ceramic, oil soaked oak, and whatever material commercial guides are made of (Shopsmith). But, the best are the Carter guides.
  25. I graduated from a pencil to a Sharpie. If we plan ahead well enough, we can get our logo and/or signatures done with the little laser.
