Another finishing question, oil-modified wood stain?

funny i got a whole box of stains I've never seen or heard of at a yard sale Sunday for a dollar.there's a gallon can of oil modified stain that's almost full!Whoa!!! The big box store sell table top clear that's very very thick .for $30.00.You mix and pour it on .One of the best high gloss clears around and durable"glaze coat" 70 coats in one application.

Ok, the stain, from Cabot, is a water based stain, (yuck!) that is advertised as acting like an oil stain. Uh, no!

 

It is a little bit easier to use than some waterbased staines i've used before, but is still a PIA. It takes a minimum of two coats to get a decent color.  I've made samples on walnut, cherry and red oak and will submit them to the customer today.

I agree with the water based finishes not being the best choice, at least for me.  I don't like the cleanup aspect of the oil bases, so I tried the water based ones but a few months later, the finish started to get a white overlay and eventually I threw out a large intarsia eagle and made another one to replace it. It was easier and quicker than trying to sand off the previous finish and redoing it. so for me, I choose to clean my brushes instead of using the water based finishes
