scrollerpete Posted March 13, 2019 Report Posted March 13, 2019 I am in the market for a planer, I like to ask the members their experience or expertise regarding the Dewalt planer. Looking at the DW734 and DW 735 only 1/2” difference on the throat but $180 (CDN) for me. I know the 735 as more whistle and bells but I’m a one man shop, will use mostly to dress live edge wood, and cutting boards. Any informations good or bad are welcome. Quote
Bill WIlson Posted March 13, 2019 Report Posted March 13, 2019 I have the 734. It's a fine planer and certainly sufficient for a one man hobby shop. I got it to replace a Delta that also served me well, but was getting a little long in the tooth. The 735 does have more bells & whistles, but comes at a higher price. Three blades is a nice upgrade, but I've never had any problems with my 2 blade planers. They will leave a surface that doesn't require much sanding. The 2 speed option on the 735 would also be very nice, especially if you plane much figured wood. If you decide on the 735, make sure you get the infeed & outfeed tables. I think they are an option and don't always come standard. Ultimately, I think you would be happy with the 734. Mine is all the planer I need. Do compare things like weight and decibel ratings. If you are leaning one direction or another, something like that might tip the scale. scrollerpete 1 Quote
oldhudson Posted March 13, 2019 Report Posted March 13, 2019 I've had a Delta for years, but if I were buying today I'd be looking a DeWalt 735. scrollerpete 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted March 15, 2019 Report Posted March 15, 2019 I too have an older Delta but if I were to buy again I would go to a floor model and larger. But for table top I would buy the Dewalt 735. Both 734 and 735 get high reviews. scrollerpete 1 Quote

spotsdad Posted March 16, 2019 Report Posted March 16, 2019 I have the 734 and am happy with it. If you take light cuts you will be able to get a nice finish. Sometimes I get tear out, depending on the grain direction, but then I just reverse the direction I feed the board. Dick scrollerpete 1 Quote
scrollerpete Posted March 20, 2019 Author Report Posted March 20, 2019 Got myself a new toy. I bought the 735 c/w tables and extra set of knives, still in the box, too cold in the garage still meflick 1 Quote
meflick Posted March 21, 2019 Report Posted March 21, 2019 Enjoy your new toy, err tool Pete when you get the weather to get to the garage. Does this mean you are back home in Canada now? Quote
spotsdad Posted March 21, 2019 Report Posted March 21, 2019 Just remember to check and then double check for nails in reclaimed wood. Nails don't play nice with the blades. Dick scrollerpete 1 Quote
