Popular Post planeur Posted March 3, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted March 3, 2020 In another life… I owned a wooden gears clock (was buys ) , and I had always wish to have another one! I am quite impressed with all the quality and beauty of each clock on the web , so I said to myself why not me! After reading a couple of times the instructions, you will see soon the progression of my wooden clock , this model of Marc Tovar from Scollsaw magazine . I will probably change the final aspect of the clock but it will be much the same.... Thanks again Jes (new2woodwrk) for your help. I am using Excalibur saw and this is how I work. I had all the Baltic birch and MDF wood at the good dimension except for the 1/2" so I managed to do some planer ! Once the plan glued to each wood, I cut all the pieces with Pegas blades # 5 The wheels are quite precise job to cut, we have only to put more attention and .....patience! I am still looking for smalls brass 1/8”rod and 5/32” and 3/16” brass tubing for putting up all the pieces together. Here are some of the pieces cut but not yet sanded or rounded . Being my first project of that kind , I have to improvise some technique, so here it is and as I said to that post I am still looking for your advise and help! Thanks planeur OCtoolguy, Ceric ME, Wilson142 and 10 others 11 2 Quote
Frank Pellow Posted March 3, 2020 Report Posted March 3, 2020 I've never done anything like this, so I can't advise you. But, I am very interested, and will follow your progress. Maybe I will get interested enough to try such a clock myself. OCtoolguy and planeur 1 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted March 3, 2020 Report Posted March 3, 2020 (edited) Look up K&S Precision Metals either directly at their site or a lot of hobby stores carry it, especially hobby stores the deal in model cars, trains and airplanes and such. I got lots of brass rods and tubing of theirs when I was building a clock. I ordered it through a model airplane hobby store. but I can't remember which one. planeur Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 As told you before, the aspect of the clock will be change by adding the hours numbers , so here is the pattern before "scrollsawing" the numbers on that ring. Unfinished And before cutting the number And this ring will be glued or screwed on the frame Next step is assembling most of the parts....! planeur OCtoolguy, Scrappile, don watson and 1 other 3 1 Quote

planeur Posted March 21, 2020 Author Report Posted March 21, 2020 Latest progress ! As told you and after reading a lot the instructions to well understand how the clock work , I change the front frame to put the hours numbers. Here it is ! Very delicate cutting, I had to strengthen the back , almost broke in one place. And I know now the dificulties and admire a lot more those "pro" who cut some photo as Frank's moose recently ! And almost nothing compare to them ! I had also did some gluing and made the hands , cut my brass pins and tubings. Next is some more gluing and assembling the wheels and first try...... ! planeur don watson, OCtoolguy and Dave Monk 1 2 Quote

I have no place for a wall hanger so I'm looking for a table model with a battery operated mechanism. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Planeur, you have really sparked a fire in me. Dave Wittich Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 That's outstanding workmanship! A real, honest-to-betsy, working clock from wood. When I finish my present project (gonna be awhile) I've GOT to try one of those. Looks like huge fun to work on. Nicely done! OCtoolguy 1 Quote

planeur Posted April 3, 2020 Author Report Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) Bonjour ! Here are some progress of my clock ! I had to recut two wheels , which were not big enough, even if I followed the plan....! All the other parts are OK ! Now is the adjusment of all the wheels together, even if they were well cut ( I think.... ) they have to turn very freely.... A very meticulous task! Have a good day and take care ! planeur Edited April 3, 2020 by planeur Dave Monk, OCtoolguy, Frank Pellow and 1 other 3 1 Quote

planeur Posted April 23, 2021 Author Report Posted April 23, 2021 Oyé oyé oyé.....my clock is still on my table, but as I say frequently, you do not become a watchmaker in a few weeks! With all our activites as skiing biking, walking, I had to finish others projets, and when I had some time , I was looking at it and try to learn how a clock that kind work in details. Recently I understands some importants functions , so some adjusments were made ( not finihed yet ), but ....but.... at last the clock was running for almost an hour without stopping ! So here it is temporally mounted .... Will show you soon the pendulum and weigh and clock running ( hoping ....! ) See you soon... planeur Ceric ME and Scrappile 2 Quote

planeur Posted April 24, 2021 Author Report Posted April 24, 2021 Here some more details of the clock : This kind of projet is full of very small details which can do a difference for a clock running or not ! Even if I did cut all the gear with a great caution, I have to sand some parts again to have the less friction as possible.... ! Looking for the weight, I found those lead shut , which are enough heavy. I put some in the pendulum, and a fiberglass in front to see them. By the way do you know a easy way to reduce the size of a video ( the one I want to show you .........! ) Planeur Tomanydogs and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
