ben2008 Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Just got this update on Yellow Heart from Ethan at Ocooch Hardwoods "Yellowheart was just recently listed as an endangered species and importing of the lumber to the US has stopped. It is unlikely we will ever carry it again." amazingkevin, JimErn and meflick 1 1 1 Quote

Wilson142 Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 I have a 3/4 x 11 x 12 in my closet. I bought when I thought I may try some intarsia. I'm happy cutting fretwork and until I read this post, it was probably destined to be used for a fretwork item. Shame to waste it like that. I have to rethink that plan. Quote
Scrappile Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 I have a pretty good board of it, but always sad when wood is not available anymore. There is still quite a bit of it listed on ebay in various sizes that an intarsia person might. be able to use. Pen blank and knife scales, bowl blanks. Here is one that has some bigger sizes: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yellowheart-boards-lumber-1-2-or-3-4-surface-4-sides-24/312556287620?hash=item48c5ce7684:m:mMldC1h13FJWUrpbVXBU13g meflick 1 Quote

I posted the message from Ethan at Ochooch Lumber, Viola, WI about Yellowheart just as I received it. It is a reminder that there may be no more available in the future. I like making intarsia projects and Yellowheart is one of my favorite woods to use. I'm going to find a few more larger pieces and stash them away. Wilson142, Scrappile and amazingkevin 3 Quote

tgiro Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 If you are in the mid-southern PA (Chambersburg), Hagerstown, MD, Martinsburg, WV area - check with Hicksville Planing. They are a local lumber yard and have a pallet full of boards of varying widths and lengths. I don't believe they ship and, if you go, they don't take credit cards. I picked up a couple of boards least week, and they still have quite a bit. Quote
Frank Pellow Posted March 16, 2020 Report Posted March 16, 2020 I use Pau Amarello for yellow. I wonder if it is also endangered. Quote
Rolf Posted March 16, 2020 Report Posted March 16, 2020 A couple of years ago a neighbor lost a mulberry tree being a city boy he had no clue as what to do so I cut it up for him. Much to my surprise it is very yellow orange inside. I sliced and stickered some hoping to see how it ages. Quote
Scrappile Posted March 16, 2020 Report Posted March 16, 2020 @Rolf, I have lots of Mulberry trees around where I live. It has beautiful wood and so does Sumac. Pictured it a birdhouse I turned several years ago, Mulberry wood on the bottom, Bloodwood roof. Very beautiful woods, but it only lasted a few month and both woods turned a not so pretty brown. Of coarse they were outside. And the finish did help from the UV even though it was suppose to. Indoors they would last longer I am sure, but I think the Mulberry will turn brown eventually, no matter. Least that has been my experience. Jim McDonald 1 Quote

I have one large plank of the stuff which I have been using sparingly. Now, I will use it even more sparingly. Quote
kywoodmaster Posted March 20, 2020 Report Posted March 20, 2020 Another possible alternative for yellow is Osage Orange (Mayapple). It also will darken over time but has a nice dark yellow when fresh. Quote
Fedido Posted March 27, 2020 Report Posted March 27, 2020 An update to the update; ordered yellow heart from Ocooch and it arrived today. Just thought I would share. Of course I took a photo or it never happened. Quote
