Wichman Posted February 15, 2022 Report Posted February 15, 2022 (edited) My given name is Wichita, this has caused issues since I was in first grade. I was born and raised in a small town in Arizona, Ajo, with a large percentage of the population speaking Spanish. In Spanish most nouns end in either a or o, the a denoting female the o denoting male. I'm male and this caused some issues. My brothers name is Waco, so it's Wichita and Waco; but it gets worse. Middle names are Zane and Shane; so it's Wichita Zane and Waco Shane, couldn't make that up if I tried. I live in Pocatello, Idaho. While I was in the military there was an investigation; during my interview, I was asked several questions: Name? Wichita, spell it? Home of Record? Ajo, Arizona, spell it? Permanent Address Pocatello Idaho... ... ... Get the heck outta here, there's no way you would do anything! You're way to memorable. In the early 90's I used the local BBS's (pre internet) and since shortened name were a thing, my username was Wich. This caused some issues because other users couldn't tell my gender or if I was wiccan. So I changed it to wichman, years later I found out that Wichman is an actual surname, who knew? Anywhoo that's how the user name of wichman came about. Thanks for reading. Edited February 15, 2022 by Wichman spelling Gene Howe, WayneMahler, John B and 3 others 4 2 Quote
preprius Posted February 15, 2022 Report Posted February 15, 2022 Cool story. My cousins names all start with D. I started adding "Me" to all my school papers since 6th grade. Some teachers objected. But there were always more than 1 Mark in the class. So they kinda were ok as long as I still put my full name. My gym teacher wanted M.Eason. So those guys called me Meason. Me. Dan Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 I work with a guy named Q. That's his entire first name. Maybe his parents were Trekkies. I worked with a guy who dated a girl named Chanda Lear. Why would parents do that? I guess it could be worse. Quote

Roberta Moreton Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 My maiden last name was Gill. My brother lived hardest with that. “GillMan”. Family tradition is I was to drop my middle name and use Gill when I got married. I did NOT do that. I also never suggested my daughters did that. I also just had a new addition to the family, my new great grandson, Memphis. Quote
John B Posted February 17, 2022 Report Posted February 17, 2022 Name's John William. However, I knew I was neck deep in manure when my mother used to yell "JONATHON " Our family is a little strange, being Irish doesn't help A true case of the Orange and the Green. My Grandfather was a Catholic and my Nanna Protestant. Nan wanted to name Dad, William, Granddad wanted Patrick, so they compromised Christened him Patrick and called him Bill. He never found out his real name was Patrick until grade 6 Quote

Reminds me of joke about a chandelier falling, won't tell it here though I work in a primary school, the strange and weird names are a real eye opener. Quote
barb.j.enders Posted February 17, 2022 Report Posted February 17, 2022 My full name is Barbara Jean and was called that until I started school. Then it was shortened to Barb.
