Oval Box #1 - #3

From some book that I have. First of three oval boxes made of curly maple.  The ribbons and bows are bloodwood / dyed veneer / bloodwood.  Dang that stuff is hard to cut! Fun little project. The next ones will be better.

Edit: Yep, Carole Rothman.  Good book! These are easier than they look.  Things I learned that are not in the book:  The ribbon wood blank must be cut exact thickness before glue-up.  1/40, 1/16 veneer are available.  Etsy.com  1/8 veneer for the edge is not (two 1/16 pieces would work).  Dyed veneer looks good, but it tends to break along the grain.  Cross grain glue-up.  The box stripes need to be within 1/64 or they look off-centered.  Raise the tails 1/4-3/8.  Glue the center bow first, then space the remaining bows.

Going to try one of her more complex boxes next!

Yep it is beautiful.

To make it a bit harder to cut put a layer (Stripe) of purple heart in there.

Beautiful box. I believe it is from Carole Rothman’s book, “Creative Wooden Boxes From the Scrollsaw”. I love Carole’s creativity in developing boxes. I have the book, need to do a few.

I am intimidated by the ribbon.  I don't have any tools to plane wood or even cut the thin strips.

Barb just get some veneer and you glue the strip easy peasy

I see something like this that I really like and I just can not resist.  Had to find the book...because I am a patternholic.  May never get to it, but it is there if I want... Those boxes are really impressive.  Great job!
