For "clamping" this I would have used elastic bands around the whole thing.  I also use "bubble tubes" (came in a shipping box) with a weight on top.

Barb, I ended up taping two or three pieces at a time, with masking tape, to a board and putting weights on it. Worked well. I even did a drop test (unintentional) and it survived unscathed.

I have a bunch of them too, but since the ornament was already painted I didn't want to take a chance of marking up the paint.
