  1. Hi John welcome to the Village
  2. I have used old, broken hockey sticks for a hockeye themed project I did for a friend. And have made a lot of things from old pallets. some pallets have some nice wood on them.
  3. looks great the color adds to it.
  4. great job
  5. congrats
  6. looking good Paul. after you get you table and chair I would definently look into a foot pedal, it makes it much easier to control.
  7. Jim, No problem thats what we are here for. to help each other out. There is no carving just a lot of shaping and sanding. and sanding, and sanding. I do all the shaping by different sanders and some by hand. Intarsia is time consuming but the end result is well worth it. Just keep working at it, portraits still give me troubles once in a while. I haven't done a pattern in so long I probably won't remember how to.
  8. Hi Jim. not a dumb question at all. Fretwork to me is where there are many inside cuts make.such as portraits. there is lots of detail being cut anstead of just an outline of a subject. To me portraits fall in this catagory. Intarsia is a completely diferent subject all together. You cut several different pieces of wood out, of different species, then sand and shape them all to fit together to make a finished project. Intarsia takes more than a scrollsaw. but the end result is rewarding. I enjoy doing both. here are a couple links from my gallery, the first is a cutting I would consider fretwork (for me), and the second link is of my last intarsia project. Hopefully there will be someone else with another answer about fretwork. mushroom fairy fresh catch
  9. The wheather is finally getting nice around here. I was just curious to what everyone was working on? So do you have any projects going? Myself I am working on 2 In God We Trust intarsias. They are going to the same guy so I'm working on both together. And have a few more intarsias lined up. between all those and for a break I turn a pen or two, then back to the scroll saw.
  10. excellent cutting.

  15. Hi Russ and welcome to the Village
  16. I've tried but they want nothing to do with the shop. I thought my son would really enjoy doing it, unlike his sisters. He can draw and paint as well as I do, but says he don't want to learn the saw. He's 19 now so there are other things more important than hanging out with dad. Several years ago I did teach a friend of mine, he was fascinated with the things I was doing and wanted to learn. He did well, even had a store together. then he moved and has no shop space, so I can't herdly ever get him to run the saw . In fact his saw is in my storage shed. I wish I could find another child/teenager that wanted to learn the art.
  17. CONGRATS Scrolldad
  18. looks good. looks very much like my pattern. I posted it there quite a while ago, if it is mine thanks for cutting it. Its always good to see one of your patterns cut. The picture being from publis domain there is always a chance of having several patterns made from the same picture. Was there a name on the pattern?

  23. Hi Kenny and welcome to the village.
  24. Here is my latest intarsia piece. This was a special order instead of the banner in the talons he wanted a fish. This came from combining two different patterns. The woods I used are - Eagle - walnut, northern white cedar, yellowheart, aspen, and bloodwood. Fish - is walnut, poplar, curly maple, paduak, aspen, butternut, ebony, and yellowheart around the eye. The second picture is to show the color better.
  25. great job, I have been wanting to try a whirlygig. did you make the crank and linkage?
