  1. That is the old "C" arm design saw. Many people did not like that aggression and that is why the more popular parallel arm design came about . They would be tough to come by these days. people have junked them more than try to sell them. Maybe find a machine shop that can duplicate some parts if you need something. Good luck.
  2. My use of Watco Danish oil goes back to when I started some 30 years ago and still love it. I normally make projects that I use the dipping method. I will take about 3 or 4 gallons of Danish oil and pour in a large container. I dip the project and let drain and wipe down. I then use a funnel and pour the remaining back into the same original cans. That is why some of my oils are so old. I do this all outside under the bright sunlight. But after I return to can I take back in soon so that it does not get too hot. heat will set that stuff up. I clean container with acetone and it is good for next time. Easiest method to apply and the finished product looks great.
  3. I have both that is over 8 years old and has not gone bad. I keep in the can it came in. The lids do not close tight any more from build up product on them. Keep in my basement shop. If you keep out of the heat should be fine. I do save some used empty cans of mineral spirits and acetone and denatured alcohol for transfer some times or at least just the cap. Just threw out about 15 empty cans when I cleaned a section of the shop.
  4. Carter was the name. That is correct. he is the best I have seen do any type puzzles.
  5. I use felt dots on the bottom of my pieces instead of whole pieces. Alot cheaper
  6. There was a guy,and I am sorry but forgot his name, but maybe someone will remember him. He actually maybe a member here for he was a member of all the scrollsawing sites years ago. He would scroll the best looking puzzles and was famous for his scrollsawn stamp puzzles. He would send these to just about anyone requested one. I have one somewhere. he did a write up years ago and it was pretty detailed and he always tried to help others do them. He would take normal photos and scroll them into puzzles. I am drawing a blank on the name but if I come up with it I will post and maybe some one in the meantime will post it. I believe it was Fred -----. But there are tons of videos and tutorials on the net of how to make scrolled puzzles. Google is your friend.
  7. Don, as far as non stick felt you can get better quality as I mentioned in a material outlet store. The one I have sells good quality. Now you want to take the next step up buy pool table cloth. Really heavy weight and top quality.
  8. I believe they are just about all equal when it comes to peel and stick felt. I have tried Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Ac Moore and Walmarts. They are are equal in my eyes and I buy from whoever is closest to when I need it. Prices are just about the same. Now if you are talking about felt that is larger in size and has no sticky back then that is something else. I buy that from a true material dealer or store. I have a few in my area that sells material for dresses, curtains and things of that nature. You buy it by the yard. I use for various projects. I use 3M 77 spray adhesive to secure it. The weave is tight and strong. You can easily see the difference side by side with the sticky back stuff. I have also bought from these people and like the product. www.dickblick.com/products/quick-stick-felt/ Now if you are talking about velvet. This is a totally different topic. By far hands down the best velvet I found is here and just used it on my Gamblers clock /pen holder I shown here. Thickness and quality is so much better than any hobby store. www.rockler.com/self-adhesive-velvet-choose-velvet-color
  9. Oh I agree about the magazines being an impact back in those days but those days are bygone days. There are not as many scrollers as there once was. you saw it in forums, gatherings, and I believe in magazine sales. As I said some people convert to internet volumes as opposed to hard copy if they are offered but there is still a fee. I see it in craft shows too. Pen turning is a new hot hobby and even that is taking hits. When people find out it is not so easy to sell these items it can become burdensome and not a lucrative hobby. If people can withstand the $$$$ crush then they continue. The world is a very different place than it was 20 years ago. I went from being in 6 different stores in top name malls and doing 10 shows a year down to 2 shows a year now. Sales are well off and not a good idea to throw good money after bad. I have added turning to my inventory and it has helped in sales but not enough to get back into things that full blown again. I remembered when I could not have enough stock in all stores. Those were the days. Times have changed and the invention of the Walmart stores and mentality.
  10. Do not do it. Please give me one example where you would need to change speed when you started cutting. Never come across a situation and I have cut many materials. Change speed before you start not while you are cutting and how do you hold that exact speed as you cut???
  11. I feel a little different than most here. I know some of you work for the magazine but this is just my opinion. I felt that both magazines had catered too much to the beginner scroller and there are no tough patterns for the experienced scroller that challenges you. I believe the reason is the length of the magazine and the need to keep them simple and quick. Yes there are patterns that appeal to all but to me over the years they are fewer and fewer so I gave up my subscription as well as my subscription to just about all woodworking magazines. I do not find myself going back to past magazines. i have now a huge problem of what to do with many years of many woodworking magazines. I do not want to just throw them out. It would be a huge shame to do this. I now go to Home Depot or other places that carry magazines and may scan them and if something catches my eye then I buy them. I believe you can order some of the magazines by email now too. Yes that saves clutter but again value is the key. It would be interesting to read stats on the different magazines over the years. Has readership dropped or increased or stayed about the same. Could give an indication of the hobby itself. I am betting it has dropped dramatically. As I said just my opinion.
  12. The statement of do not use VS with a VS motor is correct. Some people tried using a sewing machine foot pedal and they burned the motor up. A word to the wise do not do it. There is actually no need for it. You do not vary the speed as you cut. Need to vary speed use the dial meant for this. Stop and think about how tiring that would be trying to hold steady a certain speed with your foot. Does not make sense in scrolling.
  13. Answer is NO Goes for the other way around also.
  14. There are many ways to handle taxes and probably every state maybe different so no one person can say what is right or wrong. I feel sorry for your state if that is how they determine vendors. Maybe a note to the safety board about their show would be in order too. good luck to all as the new year starts up. Hope everyone has a better than last year rating.
  15. I do not own an Ipad so not up on all the jargon but there are many answers on google on how and why the ideward photos happen and how to correct. Just needs reading and undestanding of that stuff. www.thoughtco.com/why-is-my-picture-turned-sideways-1701398
  16. What is the phone used. How did you take the photo. Try rotating the camera the opposite way. This is becoming more and more annoying the more people use their phones to take photos. Someone mentioned there is an app that you can download and will size and rotate photos.
  17. May I ask why you are choosing to use tht wood??? I have found that wood to splinter alot and be very chippy. Plus it is a dull looking wood to me. Just my opinion.
  18. Take it back to Lowes and do not take no for an answer. If one Lowes gives you a hard time try another. Talk to the managers. You can do better in the saw dept though.
  19. Elbows at a 90 degree angle. That is the most relaxing position and natural position to work from. Set chair to that height. Never liked raising the back of the saw because now you are fighting the workpiece from always sliding forward and when you let off on the wood to spin it can move too far forward. there are those that get used to it and like working like that. That is why Dewalt invented the tilting stand.
  20. I have that chess set pattern and have had it for many years but never got around to cutting. After seeing this I may just break those patterns out again and have a go at it. Nice price on it. I have a clock pattern or two that I think I will also bring back to life. I may just have to step up the scrolling once again.
  21. Well where have you been??? We have been waiting for you to join in the fun. Seriously it becomes a relaxing and enjoyable hobby. It can also be a rewarding hobby so be careful when you start showing people your work. Many Christmas gifts can now be shared too. Good luck as you grow into this.
  22. Here is a link more direct to your saw. But I am afraid the parts maybe discontinued. Give a look see. http://www.ereplacementparts.com/ryobi-sc163vs-scroll-saw-parts-c-7931_8000_8001.html
  23. I like the wood combination. I love bloodwood as an accent wood. Walnut is always a rich looking wood. nice job. She will love it.
  24. Well I have been doing this for over 30 years so I believe it is something I truely love. But the last 3 years I had my share of health issues and in fact I thank the Lord everyday I am still here because it almost was my time. I also had family issues with taking care of my Mom. Being she passed 1 year ago now I would give it all up if I could still have her here with me. She and my Dad were my biggest fans of what I do. being I just returned to my shop in August I realized I still miss it. I do not meet any deadlines any more because I have none. I too have a bad back and in fact I am dealing with it this past 3 weeks now so no shop time. So to answer your question I still love it but not a serious player any more. I still get a kick out of creating things though and will always have that passion.
  25. Set of hinges. What plan do you need. Have a bench, a table, a wall, mount the tool on a pieces of 3/4" plywood and a couple hinges and it is swinging out of the way. Just remember it is now space used on its side.
