Hi Maggie and welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with the Excalibur clamps so I can't answer that question. But as far as I know, there are 3" and 5" blades. I suspect you have no 3" blades, so my guess is there may be an issue with the way you are installing them or with the machine itself. Someone will chime in soon enough and be of more help.

Since the mahogany is thin you could try dowsing it with thin CA. It should absorb into the fibers and provide a little stability to the wood.

I agree with Jim that toys are a hot item but at what cost, with the insurance? Some folks have luck with portraits but I have very little luck. I want to take a few other's advice and try some festivals that are more inclined to art. Not sure if I can get in those. If you have some unique items, Etsy may be your best bet to test the water. They are cheap, so if you don't sell, you are not out much. Local craft shows can also be a fairly cheap route to go if you have a variety of items with some in the $2 to $5 range so you can pay for the booth.

Roly, my thought is use a flat blade when you can and a spiral when you have to. I don't care for them but sometimes there is no getting around it.

Great job Lee. I like the look of a simple lamp with the detailed artwork. I think you did good enlarging the pattern a bit, too.

Thanks for the kind words. Hans, I don't like using spiral blades, but had to use them because the wood was longer than my saw. My philosophy is use flat blades when you can and use spirals when you have to. I admire the guys that do great work. with just a spiral blade.

Well, I finally finished it. The pattern is from Thomas Mullane. There are about 140 cuts, it took about 6 hours (yea, I'm slow), I stacked 1/4" cherry ply and 1/8" BB ply, I used one #1 FD-UR and one #1 FD-Spiral, and applied BLO to bring out the grain. I had some Dark Blue matting that I bought a year ago for something like this. I plan to frame it but it's too darn cold to work in the garage where my table saw is. C & C welcome. Well, I've gotta say Thomas that you are the only one I know that scrolls while sitting on an exercise ball. They are pretty comfortable, but my table is too high for that.

Gary, those are awesome! I love the detail in the mountain man and the train. I've always wanted to do that bear but never got around to it. And, you did in a month what takes me a year. Way to go.

Great work. The design seems like you could get a perfect up and down motion of the blade. Most saws with moving arms have a slight forward to back movement of the blade. I'm not sure how durable the cable would be, but it is a very ingenious idea.

Kevin, for a minute I thought you were going to say 56 hours a day. Still, 56 hours hits the WOW factor. Sully, I do have the saw tilted forward, but it is only raised about 4" in the back. I may try raising it more and see if that improves my stamina.

Great feedback. I hope to make some changes to see if I can go for an hour or more at a time. Since I started exercising regularly, I feel like I can go longer. Maybe I'll sit down Tuesday after the wife goes to work and just start cutting until I feel I've had enough. I love sitting behind the saw, but my back gets fatigued and I usually take a 20 minute break then start again.

I just completed about 1 hour of scrolling. I generally only do about 30 - 40 minutes at a time. It got me thinking...how long do you normally sit or stand at the scroll saw and what is the longest that you can remember?
